The current eruption is the least of my worries now because this scenario from 2020 may begin to develop into something new according to Icelandic experts. I'm therefore using this video to speculate a bit about the future with new footage ask some serious questions about how well prepared we are. The Blue Lagoon will reopen Saturday April 6th but at their own risk according to the authorites. Gas pollution could still become a problem there from time to time.

Good to hear the seismic activity has improved. I cannot imagine living on a young active volcanic island, with so many unknowns. Iceland’s landscape is so dramatic and beautiful- a microcosm of geologic history and activity. No wonder Icelanders are such courageous amazing people. The footage and coverage you provide, Gylfi, is incredible.

Certainly through all this uncertainty residents in Grindavik and other locals on the peninsula have really shown their resilience. I hope the drama is slowing down and the SO2 levels decline. Interesting video again! When I was living in Iceland (2020-2021) I was already scared of what would happen to Grindavik. I'm also surprised Reykjavik keeps expanding around Vellir, closest to the volcano. There are literally old lava flows there. A bit further away, the IKEA is also situated on old lava fields. These should be big warning signs that it could happen again, but I feel like not much is being done to protect the city from possible eruptions. It's also ridicolous that there are still people who think a new airport at Hvassahraun would be a good idea.

WOW! Thanks so much for yet another thorough update! So hoping that the next eruption on the Krisavik System (when, not if, it comes) will be away from both Reykjavik AND Grindavik. Encouraged, but saddened, to catch the inevitable conclusions that I must draw (from the USA) by your expression of hope that unscrupulous POLITICIANS and DEVELOPERS would not be building new housing on sites potentially unsafe in the long term. We have problems with both in our country. The BEST human response to this ongoing creation of new Icelandic terrain is to try to build, as much as reasonably as possible, FAR AWAY from the known spreading center of the Reykjanes Ridge. Unfortunately Grindavik is a GREAT harbour, while sitting right in the "target line" for potential future eruptions. May it be spared! Much LOVE and best wishes to the people of Iceland, and to you especially, for your incredible toughness and resilience! Wellington, our capital, sits smack-bang on our largest fault-line, and is hugely prone to earthquakes. Christchurch was built by people who thought buildings only had to withstand gravity, not the sideways shaking an earthquake produces. But will we shift our cities to safer places? What do you think? @@sparklepea Most of our cities have ports; Hamilton and Palmerston North are the only ones inland, so safe from tsunami. Northland has the lowest earthquake risk, I believe, but Whangārei is a port city. Honestly, Hamilton has better accessibility than Palmy, but they'd both probably do. The South Island is basically the Alpine Fault, and in any case, let's keep it as unspoilt as it currently is

It could be worse. See Naples. Where the city extends into the Campi Flegrei caldera. Which experienced an eruption just 500 years ago. And had rather frequent eruptions at Vesuvius until 1944.

I'm fascinated by volcanoes since childhood and would very much like to visit an eruption site someday. But such tourism *must* be ethical (and safe of course). When Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands erupted in 2021, destroying crops and villages alike, tourists flocked the island while people who lost everything were crying in despair, seeing their homes swallowed by lava flows in real time. I would never, ever behave like that, it's a question of decency.

Why am I hearing Starships' "We built this city on rock and roll" echoing around my head just now? Relocating a country's main airport is no small matter, nor is moving the same country's capital city. For both you need a fairly large "flat" land area, that is geologically stable with a relatively benign climate. In the case of Iceland I can't see many areas that fulfil these needs, look further north and the climate gets colder, move to the centre of the country and there are mountains and glaciers to contend with, look to the south coast and there may be a few places that are just about big enough and flat enough, then look at the east coastal region and there may be one or two possible areas. Then there's two questions that run in parallel - Time? and Willingness? Time has two parts - how long have the existing airport and city got, and how long to develop the infrastructure? Civil engineers can give rough figures for both, but I'd guess at least ten years for cutting the first sod to being up and running. Willingness is harder to quantify as it depends on both internal and external influences.

But volcanoes do their own things and they don’t care about anything. We had 25°C today here in the southeast of the Netherlands;a new record because normal temperature is about 14°C. I can completely understand if Iceland decide to create a second basket to put the eggs. even a third one may help. Regarding the road to the airport, would it be interesting to create a ferry system from the capital city to the airport ? that would avoid any land issue. and you are a land of seamen at the origin. As a tourist, that would probably be a great view to the area as an introduction after landing in the country. I like how pragmatic you approach the things

But Gylfi, the tension around Grindavik is still slowly rising. I wonder if the dike is now feed directly by the plume? And all the other seismometers around are getting slowly more restless. In my opinion it’s not over…

I think it's just starting on the eastern part, by lake Kleifarvatn and all the way to Hengill, but to the west, it's all quite calm for the first time in long time, but might not last though as we know :) I hope that Prof. Þorvaldur got this one right, but we might both suffer from wishful thinking :)

What exactly is Þorvaldur Þorðarson's argument for saying that he expects the Svartsengi episode to come to en end when this eruption stops? On the one hand, the route for the magma seems to be open from great depth all the way up. So for sure, one scenario is that the current eruption ends because the inflow from below ceases, and in that case it would be likely that the episode ceases. On the other hand, if something else happens to impede the eruption, e.g. the magma route from Svartsengi to the surface becomes blocked for some reason (I don't know how likely that is), and the inflow from great depth remains intact, then the little shallow magma chamber under Svartsengi could just inflate again and build up pressure to free the route to the surface again. Or find another route nearby. So what makes Þorvaldur think this will stop? As far as I understand there are no clear indications that the magma inflow is stopping; in fact, the eruption is now going at a rate of 7-8m^3 lava per second, whereas before this and the last eruption the magma chamber filled at a rate of 8 million m^3 in 20 days, which means 4-5m^3/s. So unless part of the magma before the last eruption somehow went elsewhere (but wouldn't that have caused measurable inflation?), this seems to be an increase, rather than a decrease, in magma inflow. Which doesn't mean that it cannot stop in a few months, or weeks or maybe days, but I am not sure that there are actual indications for this.

I do think you are right about the politics over in Iceland. They need to build a new main city in a safe area for your youngsters of the future. Build where any volcano active is nill and safe. Reuse building materials if need be as many of the homes could be re used for the future. I hope they see your vision ahead

Thank you again for this great update. What I have become curious about: how do they measure / know what’s going on 10-15km deep? Or how do they know that at for example 5km deep the magma is filling up magma chambers? And what I also find hard to find: how big is the biggest crater on this eruption? I have truly no idea about the width and the height. Hope you read this and can help me with my questions. Now by writing or maybe a video in the future? Good luck with everything!
