Congratulations! You have reserved a spot on the Salkantay Trek. Now it's time to prepare for the trek. One thing to prepare for the trek is to figure out what and what not to pack. Don't worry, I have you back and put together AN ESSENTIAL PACKING LIST for the SALKANTAY TREK and INCA TRAIL! I hope you find this packing list helpful. If you think of something else that is important or essential that I forgot to include please leave it down in the comments below for all future trekkers!

Yeah most places will either not have TP or will charge you. I brought a roll of TP and wet wipes which I thanked myself for later! Glad you found this helpful! Have fun trekking!

And that's why you shouldn't use waterproof shoes. Because waterproof shoes aren't. And when they inevitably get wet, they take forever to dry. Do you have any recommendations for an electrical converter?

I didn't bring an electric converter with me to Peru because they use the same outlets as in the US. But I do have one that I purchased on amazon.It has three outlets with two usb and you and exchange. out the plug depending on the. country.

I don't think you need a sleeping pad. Every where we stayed on the trek with Salkantay Trekking provided elevation off the ground. I didn't find the sleeping arrangements to be uncomfortable.

Hi! I know this video is older but do you recommend a hardshell jacket along with a rain jacket? We are going in April and trying to put a list together

The jacket are brought was waterproof so that way I could eliminate some items in my bag. I would recommend just a hard shell jacket and bringing a poncho for if it rains. That’s what I did.

So I live in Florida and don't have any winter clothing at all, lol. And, I'd hate to spend a lot of money on jackets and clothes that I'm only going to wear during this trek, lol. Can I just buy most of this stuff in Cusco for cheaper, instead of buying it all here in FL and paying extra for a checked bag? I'm planning on just a carryon backpack, I have an Osprey 40 gallon. Also, is that too big for the trek? What items go in the duffle bag for the porters/donkeys to carry and which items should I carry myself? Sorry for so many questions :)

In Cusco you have the opportunity to rent and purchase any gear that you may need. But what I brought is all I needed. As for what items to pack, you only pack what you will need for the trek in the duffle and your Osprey they store at their head office in a locked room. I placed clothes and toiletries that I would need for my 3 days and then packed snacks, my camera, etc in my Osprey day pack.

If you are trekking with Salkantay trekking they will have water for you. We were never short on water. I brought a refillable water bottle and filled every morning and at lunch.

Hello! are there charging ports at the campsite so at least we can charge some stuff on some nights? How did your knees feel after the hike without hiking poles especially going downhill? Thinking how tough it would be on the knees without the hiking poles

Dianshan Ee There is electricity and charging outlets the first night in the sky dome. They turn the electricity on after a certain time. Night two in the Andean huts there is no electricity. Although where you eat there was an extension cable where some people were charging their phones but that’s where the portable charger really comes in handy. I used it to charge my phone. I had extra go pro batteries so that wasn’t a problem. As for the jungle domes I’m unsure if there is charging outlets. Honestly I would have felt like the poles would have been annoying. If you lean back when you are going down you should be fine. I had more problems with my feet. They were killing me.

Thank you very much for the helpful video! As far as sizing of bags, would you recommend a 40L bag or something larger? I’m quite a minimal guy but this is my first trekking trip

If you are going to trek with Salkantay Trekking, the day before your trek you have a meeting and they provide you with a duffle bag. Its a pretty good sized shuffle bag that will fit everything that you will need. We stored the rest of our luggage at their main office.

I saw on another video that MP limits the size of the pack to 25L. Larger and you have to check your pack. But given porters you dont need a huge pack.

Thanks Kayla, since you packed all of your stuff into a duffel bag was it easily accessible while hiking if you needed something from it or was it only accessible at specific points/times?

So the duffle is sent up the hill with the mules. So for the hike I suggest a day pack (backpack) for stuff you will need. That’s what I did. You won’t have full access to your duffles til the end of the day each day.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the video! I did not apply bug spray. I did not find it to be a problem. during the time of year I was there. I did apply sunscreen to my face daily and on the last day of the trek, the sun w as shining and it was pretty warm so I applied to the areas that were exposed. I hope this helps!

Heyyyyy. To book a spot for Salkantay Trek, do you have to book many days in advance? Would that work if I book a few days in advance? Ta

So it all depends on if it is peak season or not. Salkantay Trekking has small groups to keep the experience unique. The Salkantay is definitely less popular than the Inca. I booked two months in advance. I would maybe reach out to the company and ask. They have an office right in Cusco so you could always go in and talk to someone as well. They responded quickly via email which is how you book the trek. When are you thinking of doing the trek?

@@user-qn1if6nk5n They have tours that leave every day I do believe. Why not shoot them an email and see if you think you will need to book in advance or not. There are a lot of tours that leave daily from Cusco and a lot of which you can book last minute. So it may work, but with the pandemic, once they open up they may have an influx of tourists that are wanting to do the same thing. So hopefully you will be able to trek!

No I did not wire trekking poles. No one on my group did. Personally I would find them to be more of a nuisance then helpful. They company does offer them for rent or you can buy them cheap in Cusco if you prefer walking poles but I didn’t find them necessary.

@@lovelybabyb00 I did rent a sleeping bag. It was clean and warm, plus it’s one less thing you have to travel with so it was worth the price of the rental. If you are planning on trekking with Salkantay Trekking, a pillow won’t be necessary, each place has a pillow and I didn’t feel like I needed anything more.
