As this week’s rock and roll steeplechase thunders out over the jumps, the following runners and riders make it past the post …
… “First he changed music. Then he changed the world!” and other over-cooked biopic sells.
… Billy Joel returns by the miracle of Artificial Ignorance.
… what you learn from visiting rock stars’ childhood homes.
… what’s Malta done to deserve a four-day Liam Gallagher festival?
… the one thing that’s never changed about Country Music.
… how Hotel California ended up in court.
… Sam Mendes’ Beatles project and the problem with actors playing very famous people.
… Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’: sampled banjo and other misdemeanours.
… from Watergate to Putin: the 50 year-old record so lean, smart and cynical that the world’s only just catching up.
… Don Henley on Irving Azoff: “He may be Satan but he’s OUR Satan.”
… Rock sea-cruises: “get your marital vows renewed by a member of Weezer!”
... why CD has ruined Jackson Browne’s For Everyman.
… what Hugh Grant superimposed on the character of Jeremy Thorpe.
… and birthday guest Adrian Ainsworth - Arse Curtains and other career-limiting band names.

The Eagles Greatest Hits hasn't been the best selling album for many years. Thriller, Back In Black, The Bodyguard soundtrack and Dark Side OTM have all sold more. Also, what's going on with the number of adverts in the podcasts these days? Listening on Spotify, it now has more ads than any other podcast I listen to. Some ads even come in midway through a sentence!

Sweary band names: the band formed by former Danny Wilson singer was King L, and despite the Melody Maker listing their gigs seemingly every week, it took months for the penny to drop...

I've always thought that the cover of Pretzel Logic is part of the love we have for it. It's not their best record but it's close. Their last great album for me though. By the time of Aja they'd disappeared up their own arse.

Bad band name: Blancmange. Neil always regrets it.

Ahem, Iron Maiden are heavy metal and their songs very much tell stories. e.g. Empire of the Clouds, When the Wild Wind Blows, The talisman etc

I agree you can't generalise, it is the same with indie bands , there are some songs that have stories, the Stone Roses Sally Cinnamon was the first one I could think of, boy finds letter on the train and reads it.

I think that Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne were neighbors, not apartment mates. Listen to the rest of the Country charts. None of it sounds like true Country.

Wasn’t Dylan picked up by the police for looking a bit suspicious outside Springsteen’s family home?

Sweary band names, you ask? I'm fairly confident that Melbourne's own The Fuck Fucks claim the title.

Pretzel Logic - the least dated album of all time? Hmm, lovely record, but it sounds very, very mid 70s.

I would probably go that far, yes.
Is social media killing pop music? And where have all the bands gone?
