I watched the whole thing, thinking "wow, this is thorough, audio and video quality is top notch, and his opinions are honest, I like this". And then at the end you mention your subscribers and how you have so few. I went out of full screen just to find you have 72! 72!!?? It's going to be 73 now, you deserve more people to follow you, this content is great! It was just what I needed. I was seduced by the manufacturer's video and now I know from a real life user of the bag. Thanks!

As much as I appreciate your honest approach to the review, I advise you to first fill in the gaps in your knowledge of the product. First, it showed when you were saying the strap isn't reversible. Second, it was most obvious when you were talking about the dividers, it clearly shown you didn't use them at all, probably tried 2 or 3 times and it didn't work for you so you scratched if off the list. Quite the contrary, those dividers are one of the best, if not the best and most versatile dividers you could find in any of the photo bags. Talking from my own experience. They have a bit of a learning curve before you use them well but once you do, they are pretty awesome. That's all, peace.

I have had one for several months now and love it. I agree with you on some of the smaller criticisms like the smaller exterior pockets. BTW, my iPhone 6plus in it's case fits in the side pockets just fine without fear of it falling out. You apparently did not spend enough time with the "origami" dividers. You can very easily make them much shorter (about half their fullest extension) by folding in half and then TURING THEM OVER. Then, if positioned against a side wall, the black strip of velcro can be used to fold over and lock in place providing a cover on top of say maybe a shorter lens stored below. Give it a try....works great.

I'm from a family of photographers since 1920's. My great grandmother didn't have a "Camera bag" but her camera was always fabulous while taking photo's of Pancho Villa during the war. Then my grandfather's camera was very heavy and his case square, leather, very heavy. For me I have changed bags multiple times in 30 years to find the best. This is the best bag I have ever had. I'm using it going to all 59 national Parks by my 60th birthday. Comfortable, all my equipment fits beautifully and most important it doesn't look like a camera bag. Some places you don't want to stand out and show the world you are carrying a lot of expensive gear. A must bag.

I really appreciate the fact that you used the bag for a month before doing your review. Others have just received the bag, put some stuff in it and did a quick review which they were clueless about how some of the features were supposed to work. Good, honest review. Thanks!

Great video review! Hey, regarding the laptop space: According to Dell website (and the model you provided), the screen size of the laptop you own is 15.6" (diagonal) and its chasis actual width is 383mm = 15.08 inches (lets remember screen size is different/smaller than chasis size. If this info is right and according to the bag specs you mention, this might be why your laptop won't fit in the bag. On the other hand the 15" Macbook Pro screen size is 15.4-inch and its chasis width is 14.13 inches. (although this is the retina MacBook, previous models vary in height only) So as you said this might've been thought for Mac users, it seems you could still fit a laptop with a smaller width than 15-inches.

I reside in Africa, and I haven't found a retailer that carriers these bags on their shelves.. I was looking to purchase this bag online as a travel bag for my photography as I'm switching to Fuji X system and wanted something small and compact to fit two XT3 bodies and three Fuji prime lenses 16, 23, 35 & my Canon 100m Prime with the Fringer adaptor - I think this bag might be too big for that purpose - so a big thank you for the comprehensive review.

I think you nailed what I don't like about the dividers in this bag. I currently use a Fujifilm system, including two bodies and have a lot of small lens that I usually stack to fit in a messenger bag as large as this. Having only 3 large dividers with no padded separators for stacking and limited velcro area suck. I usually save room by storing each camera body with a lens attached, orientated lens down. You can't easily do that with this bag, having only three dividers --- the two bodies would bump into each other. The way I use this bag is to use the dividers to create three tall sections and then put lens in lens pouches so that they have some padding as I stack them. I only store one camera body with lens attached; I store the other body with lens detached. This setup hardly works when you want to work out of the bag with all of your lens available. If you use less gear --- like what you see in the Peak Design videos --- the bag works, but, what a waste of such a large bag for hauling lens and camera bodies.

+mvillar24 Yeah I didn't understand why the bag would be so big but in their demonstration videos, use only small loads as examples. I would have not invested in such a large expensive bag if I a load as small as those. But I think it's because they know the dividers are not very useful if you use the bag's full internal space

I completely agree with what +Lupe Jelena said. Your production value is outstanding and your opinion is clear, based on experience and provides useful information. I happen to have one of these for myself, backed their Kickstarter from day 1, and I agree with most things you say, with exception to the dividers. For me they do exactly what I want them to do, I have wide compartments, slim ones and they fold down to make half compartments where I can put my camera on for easy access. But that pretty much depends on what you want them to do, of course. I tend to use it for other outings as well, filling them with not only camera gear, and find that it's really usefull for everyday use as well. That's also a huge plus side, it doesn't look like a camera bag, in contrast to my big, fat, hulking black LowePro bag that I used to lug around (Stealth Reporter 400). This fits (almost) the same amount of gear, but does it so much more elegantly. Great review, and you've got yourself another subscriber :)

Devon, it's Adam from Peak Design here. First off, thank you for this incredible review! This is hands down the most detailed Everyday Messenger review we've seen. Thank you so much for your support, and for taking the time to walk through the bag's features in such depth. Sounds like the dividers are definitely feature of the bag that you are least happy with. If I could paraphrase your pain-point, it's that you cannot get the kind of flexibility/versatility you need out of them, or that we advertise. Would you say that's accurate? Would love for you to have a look at this video here (the whole thing, but especially starting at 11:18): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otOkndSf3d6wkqM.htmlm18s. Our head designer Art walks through a few different packing scenarios, each of which are made possible with different divider configurations. You can see how he folds the dividers to function at full, 2/3 or 1/2 height, as well as using dividers to enable gear stacking. Would love to know if this tutorial helps you get more from the divider system. Also, we're gotten feedback from folks who want additional dividers and we're working to hopefully make those available on our site in the near future. Cheers, and thanks again! Adam & the PD Team

+Peak Design Video Thank you so much! That means a lot coming from the manufacturer! I will be reviewing a few more of your products as I had purchased one of your bundles so be sure to hit that subscribe button ;D I've spent a pretty good amount of time with the dividers and I believe that they just do not do much for me with the large load that I have. It seems as though that really using the flexibility of the dividers (creating shelves and whatnot) requires a bit too much space. I am using a much larger load than any that are used as an example in your video. I think I will create a video of the load I have as a lot of people are against my opinion regarding the dividers. It seems that people with smaller loads have a much better time with the dividers. Nonetheless, I still really enjoy the bag and decided not to take advantage of your 30 day return window. :)

+Peak Design Video So I noticed you guys changed the max Laptop Sleeve Dimensions in the product specifications. My inability to fit my laptop in the bag I was told that will fit my laptop in was extremely disappointing to me and I feel bad for anyone else who felt gypped by the inaccurate advertising. So I'm glad you guys changed it, but the least you could have done was give me some credit for making you guys aware of the problem ;P

Nice review, thanks. I did notice that you didn't think the cross-strap would work when you use the non-default shoulder. You can actually swap the support straps around, so the clip on the cross-strap is on the other side. On the dividers, I have two of them at half-height, I find them much better than the standard velcro ones. So it's: - Left side, a 21mm lens underneath the divider, and my A7R2 with 55mm on top. - Middle is open (tall) back to back with the left one, keeping the A7R2 in place on the left. If I have a long lens, it goes there. - Right is either open or half-height, depending on whether I have more lenses with me. I guess that the smaller camera/lenses makes it easier to use the dividers in a different way?

Just got this bag today, and I'm liking it a lot. I spent about 2 hours trying to fit in all of my gear that previously took up a large backpack and a seperate small camera bag. My biggest issue is how narrow the bag is. I could barely fit in my Sony a7II mirrorless camera without it bulging the sides out. I can't imagine a DSLR in there. I've got lots of random stuff like painters tape, tape measures, and misc nick-nacks that I have to take with me on the job and those obscure shaped items really do not fit well into the bag. I even had trouble fitting my macbook air charger into it (in the tablet pouch). Currently my bag weighs about 30lbs+ with all my gear, but is still fairly comfy. Hopefully I don't have to carry it far with my stuff in there, though if I take it on a hike or something it would have considerably less inside. Great review, good humor, clear audio and video. Thanks!

You should check out the Tenba DNA series. I bought one just before Peak announced this product. Regular dividers, more so you can section up the space more, elastic mesh pockets on the outside for for water bottles or such. Less trendy/hipster design and at around half the price. The only downside is that I end up putting my peak design capture pro clip on the strap as there is no place on the bag to attach it.

Great review, but I must disagree with the dividers. I usually carry a couple small lenses with me and I find that folding the dividers down at 90 degrees effectively doubles the space I have. For example, I put two dividers facing back to back near the "bottom" side, then I: place one lens between the dividers and the side wall, fold the divider closest to the wall at 90 degrees; and place the second lens on top. I leave the second divider vertical so it holds the top lens in place, and I leave the rest of my bag open most of the time. This gives me a nice large space to throw my camera with a lens attached into the bag. Another way I use it is to put small but infrequently used things like chargers, a point-and-shoot, and GoPro cases under the dividers when they are folded down, and stack things like the strap, my camera, or ultralight rain coat on top. I also have some complaints about the laptop sleeve even though I can fit my Yoga 900 and Nexus 10 comfortably in there; however, I usually use it to carry around a couple contracts or other paperwork. The only thing I've ever used the top access zipper for is to access the small "passport" pocket, which I use for business cards. I am also satisfied using this bag as carry on baggage on airplanes. It is a little big to fit under the seat in front of me, but it can be done in a pinch.

Thanks for the excellent review. It's great to see something in depth, rather than short reviews after only owning something for a few days. Like yourself I had never owned anything from Peak Design. But I've been using the Everyday Messenger for over a couple of months now. I was also rather disappointed by the dividers not being quite as flexible as I had hoped. I was also somewhat worried about the laptop slot. I haven't traditionally taken my laptop out with me, and although it is only 13", it is quite fat (unlike the MacBooks they always seem to feature in reviews). But it did fit quite well. Although I'm still not sure how often I'll take it out. Living in the North West of the U.K., it has been raining regularly (a lot) during the last few months, and I can report the waterproofing does work well. Like yourself, I bought the bag as a bundle and was impressed with using the capture clip so I have my camera outside the bag and can carry more gear inside.

great review, I wish I had found one as fair as tours before I bought mine, as all the others as you pointed out reaked of fanboyisim. I also hate how it doesn't stand up well. I typically unload my main compartment when I get to the office and it just flops over simply from the weight of a few USB cables in the front compartment. I disagree on the side pockets being useless. I use them to keep my keys in, and occasionally my phone (a note 5) all the time. I don't use mine as a camera bag, but more of a gadget and work bag, and I wish it had more organizational space for small random objects. the laptop compartment is small but it fits mine which is a HP Elitebook 840 laptop great.

Not sure what the problem is on the laptop, since it looks like an overall width issue, not a thickness issue, which is generally not a function of different vendors as they are generally all within a fraction of the screen width in terms size. I have no problem fitting my 2015 Macbook Pro 15.4" and my 2017 MSI 15" laptop and my Alienware 15 (obviously not at the same time). Also, I am able to put any of my laptops concurrently with my 12.9" iPad Pro, which I put into the little embedded secondary area in that same zippered area in that back pouch. Maybe it matters how full you have the bag, as I generally fill mine up to the second to last hook in the front, or possibly you got a mis-sized bag. I would definitely let them know at Peak Design, as they seem like a company that will take care of you. I have read that some have gotten extra dividers from them, as well as the new tote style multi-dividers. BTW, there is a trick to getting those straps in, which took me about 10 times to figure out, which is fairly obvious in retrospect (push it in with one hand in about 5 sections, while holding it straight out with the other). Good luck with your travels and all and GREAT VIDEO!

Nice review. I've had mine for about 2 months now, and I couldn't agree more. Especially the dividers. You can fold it in half and stack something on top, but then what. That 2nd item is totally unsupported and will clunk into anything next to it...unless you use another divider standing up. Now, you've only got one divider left for all your other stuff. Overall though, very nice bag. And nice review.

I have the bag, i'm very happy with it. I have a macbook pro 15 inches and it fits perfectly and I add when travelling my ipad mini in the ipad place with the computer. So I guess they designed it for mac. I am new to photography I had bought two back pack sort of bags and definitely this one fits better and looks a lot better. I have a mirrorless sony a7R and I don't have the clip so the camera goes in the bag. there is plenty of room for my camera, nd filters, four batteries, two remote control and 3/4 Lenses and I could fit more. I'm happy with it but then again, i never had another messenger bag to compare. I felt disapointed with the innner seperators but I kind of get the feeling that i didn't quite get how it works !

You got a new subscriber! I like how honest your review is. We're soon going to carry Peak Design products at the camera store where I work, so I was thinking of maybe going for the Everyday Messenger once we have it, since I'll have time to get familiar with it. Considering that my camera bags are my equivalents of purses, they need to fit pretty much everything I might need. Luckily, I'm using a mirrorless camera with only three lenses, all of which are decently short, so I might get some use out of the dividers, who knows, if I somehow manage to make the stacking thing work.

Thanks for the comprehensive review tho it was a bit on the long side. I almost bought the bag during the Kickstarter campaign, and I'm kinda glad I didn't. There's a few flaws in there that would really annoy me - and Dan Carr (Shuttermuse) also pointed out a couple of other design flaws in his review. It's quite a stylish and innovative bag with some interesting features & I reckon the MkII version, if they listen to feedback from users, could be killer.

1) You didn’t even try with the origami crap. Yes, you can pack larger, bulky items just fine, and fold the dividers in a way that will support them. I carry a Nikon D500 (without a vertical grip) with a 500mm PF prime mounted in mine. It doesn’t budge, and it slides in snugly into folded dividers, AND is suspended well away from the bottom and the sides. 2) Not sure what size your Dell Inspiron is (you mention the wide side is 15”, but that’s *not* a 15” laptop then - the 15” should be the diagonal), but my MacBook Pro 15” fits without a hitch. I know i’m writing this from a 4 years in the future perspective, but still, MacBook Pro has huge f-in bezels. I’m guessing today’s, more modern laptops, with near to no bezel, would fit even easier. 3) I’ve got the gray version and it doesn’t catch on my shirts, nor catch lint - BUT, the belt, weirdly, does catch on anything and everything, from my hair, to some shirts, to my camera straps. It’s bizarre. 4) The cover/flap is what annoys me the most - when the bag is filled out so most weight is on the ends, the flap sides fold outwards and look like crap. You can see it in your vid too in some places. Minor aesthetic niggle, yeah, but i always wonder if it will catch on something while i’m moving around (i’m a fatass, i bump into things all the time). 5) Side pockets are useless. I’m not even sure why they’re there. 6) Different strokes and all that, but i find the design exceedingly ugly. It looks like a cardboard mockup of a messenger bag.

Good review. This bag was in my shopping cart for a while, but I wanted to see if all of the innovations actually panned out. It sounds like the clasp on the front, and the strap are as good as advertised. The origami dividers... not so much. Keep up the great work.

Very nice review. I have this bag since december and its funny how we use bag different way :) For example I use the upper zipper A LOT ... basically its an access to my wallet stored in that tight pocket in the main department. Totally agree on dividers however I found very nice layout which absolutely fits my needs. PD videos related to that topic helped me a lot. I use one of the side pockets for keys and the other one for a knife. Also I store my radio trigger in the red drained battery compartment however I agree its not ideal. And luckily I have Macbook pro 13' which fits great. I thought that 15' cant get in. Thanks for confirmation. Probably the biggest issue I have with this bag is that the main department cover is somehow sticking out after a while ... don't know how to describe. Its more a fashion issue :) Again great review!

Regarding the dividers, have you looked at their video explaining how to use them? I agree that three may be not enough, but the folds they can do make platforms and do fold down to multiple sizes.
@Devonvp
@Devonvp 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, saw the video. I probably didn't use the best wording when I said that the dividers weren't flexible. They are, but not in the best way in my experience. They are not the easiest to work with, are difficult to retain their shape, and overall not nearly as functional as I expected. I think they really shorted their customers by only providing 3. However, some users with smaller loads may find more use out of them than me.

@jrulison
@jrulison 8 жыл бұрын
+Devon VP the strap has 3 slots for 3 different lengths. When using the largest length slot the hook piece comes out causing the bag to fall. This is most common when putting the bag over the shoulder or setting it down. The reason for this is that the bottom or max length slot is bigger than the other two.

Hi Dev, I agree with Reskiy. I did not mind the length of the video at all. A quality in depth review does take time. I am just happy that you did not weasel out of the review like some others with statements like...'I can not determine if this is the bag for you. It will depend on your shooting style and your budget'. Don't get me wrong, you started off like a fan for a second like the evil ones had gotten to you to convince you to do a positive review, but once I got past your pros, you started consistently talking about your disappointments. Right now, I am going to say that I am still on the fence. One part of me says get it because of what you shared at the end of the video with all the stuff that you can pack as well as I like the tripod concept. Another part of me is saying that it is bigger than what I would like and the most important feature is the overhead zipper and your experience has found it to be ineffective..... I have not seen any other bags with the peak's level of style and functionality; so I might end up getting it by default, but for now, I am going to do some more research. Thanks for sharing your experience and happy shooting.

You are welcome... By the way, I ended up spending a good portion of the day researching camera bag videos of all types... I had went to the store to specifically put the Sony A7RII in my hands and I was in love. I looked at some other things, but I came across a bag, Think Tank v40 2.0...I think it would have been fine for just a one lens project, but it got me researching camera bags...The short version is that I looked up everything from the Think Tank product line to the Tenba line-up including their switch,dna, and cooper product lines and at the end of the day, the Peak Design had better overall features. Not sure if that makes you feel better about your purchase or just annoyed because of the overhypness. I also looked at the Mirrorless Mover line-up and the Messenger was still just that one step better... Sooo....I will likely get the Messenger, I am just going to have to figure out how to get that top access compartment to work for me as that is the most important feature for me.... Thanks again for sharing your experience and it did help out alot in me making my decision...Happy shooting and good luck on your future YT videos....

Hey Devon, Great review. Ive been looking at this bag for a long time now and Ive seen more and more people complain about the exterior pockets and laptop pouch. Thank you for such an unbiased review as many people seemed to miss those flaws that newer reviews are showcasing. You didn't really talk about the field pouch and how it could potentially be used to store those "larger" bulky items. Any comments on how well it could do in storing charging brick type things in the bag? I'm really mostly interested in this bag as a regular use bag and a camera bag second. I usually only take photos for an event annually and occasionally for my uni projects where I only carry a camera and maybe a second lens. How do you think the bag would hold up for use outside of being a camera bag? Do you see it being usable as a cycling bag? Most people have reviewed this as a camera bag and not an everyday bag, everyone is missing the one side of the bag that I'm interested in most. Thanks in advanced

I just got my Peak Everyday Messenger today and I'm hesitant on keeping it. I also found the dividers incredibly frustrating and couldn't figure out an easy configuration to fit all of my gear into. I use an Incase Sling Pack that is much smaller and it fits a FF dSLR+lens, A7+lens, and two more primes, plus my laptop! I was hoping the Everyday messenger would fit all of that and more, but it's really tough. If I could use one word to describe the bag, it would be...STIFF. Great review though! And since you were able to put up with some of its shortcomings, maybe I'll consider keeping the bag and figuring out better ways to utilize it. Also the brown looks beautiful in your video, but not so much in other videos. I bought the gray because of that, but now I wish I had a brown...

+wenbinbin2010 I have used the bag for 5 weeks trip. at first it is really stiff. but after some use it start becoming more flexible (not sure is it because i get used to it or the fabric start getting soft after use it every day). The design and idea itself is great, but I think they will need more feedback from general users for them to design better bag in future. After all this is their first bag designed.
@Devonvp

+wenbinbin2010 I looked up that Sling bag and it looks gorgeous. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience with my first sling bag a few years ago that involved a lake, my two most expensive lenses, and a stupid pocket I forgot to zip close ONCE. I will never trust myself with a sling bag again... The Everyday Messenger is definitely a stiff bag, but it hasn't been a problem for me because I already pack the bag up as much as possible. I also saw that the tan color looked a bit weird in other videos but was pleasantly surprised when I finally got my hands on it. It's beautiful. So beautiful. However, its starting to show a bit of use. I haven't tried cleaning it though. They have some really awesome customer service, I'm sure they'll let you exchange it if you decide that you want the tan!

Good in-depth review and well done! I've had the bag for a little over a month now and love it. It took me a couple of days to figure out how I wanted to use the dividers, but once I did I was good to go. I put my smaller gear in the bottom and fold them over to put more (larger stuff) on top. I agree that it would be nice to have another divider or two though - I stand my external drives up in there and it would be nice if each had it's own spot instead of putting two or three in one spot. I actually just took the stability straps off because I didn't use them and it allows the bag to expand a bit more on the ends. As for the pockets on the end, I usually stick lens caps or cloths in there when I'm shooting - temporary storage. Subscribed. #372

+Russell Fletcher I also found out that they are also, in fact, reversible! (info in description). I didn't go over my experience much on hikes because i actually went on one good sized hike with the bag and it was a small load. But since I uploaded this vid, I went on a pretty long one with a large 25lb load with the bag and it went pretty well. It was surprisingly comfortable to me and I din't have any real problems. However, I am very heavy shoulder bag user, never use dual shoulder strap bags.

Unfortunately most actual camera bags seem to be ugly as sin and too bulky, and its really hard to find a suitable non-camera bag that keeps lenses etc safe but easily accessible. But fair if I end up liking it. My main concern is comfort. If I do buy it its first test would be a 2week vacation at Disney next month...so I'm debating on either getting this bag vs a backpack since it'll be on me for quite some time. I don't expect to carry too much. Could you see yourself carrying it all day on your shoulder comfortably? Any insight would be awesome.

+Jonathan ybarra Between the time of me making this recording and then finally putting it up, I actually went on a 6 hour hike with a heavy load and I had no problems with it. I was actually genuinely surprised at how comfortable I was with it. Keep in mind that I've been using messenger bags for the past 3 years for my equipment and that I had been using the Everyday Messenger for over a month before I went on this hike. I'm not too sure how comfortable it'll be for someone who isn't already use to messenger bags. Great thing is, Peak Design offers a 1 month return window. Even if it shows some general wear from normal use, they'll take it back if you don't like it. Thats what their CS told me.

I don't like this bag and I have many. I have had cheaper messenger-type bags from amazon that proved to be more versatile. The camera industry is in a bubble now, so many products will be released around it. However, in the issue of the laptop, I would not recommend using a bag with laptop + camera + lenses. It becomes excessively heavy and everything in there starts to hit each other pretty badly as time goes by. I would recommend using one big travel suitcase for everything to leave at the hotel and a second smaller bag to take with you with only the things you will need for each assignment.

It's definitely one of the more quiet bags. No velcro pockets. Material is much quieter than most bags as it is canvas and not polyester. Zippers are probably of normal volume, but they're not necessary to enter main compartment. The only thing that may be a problem for you would be the metal pieces that latch the main flap. They do sometimes clink & clank when you open and close, but once it's latched down properly, there is no clanking.
