I've managed to strip the tread on caliper mounts. On forks. I didn't think I'd done them up that tight. I have sorted them out by using a helicoil kit to drill out the hole, then cut a new thread and finally screw in a tread to the correct size. I never had any issues after this.

Enjoyed the run through of the history of standards. As someone who biked almost every day for 25 yrs., mostly to work but some mtbing, touring, fundraisers, and messenger races, I actually didn't 'see' changes until I ran out of spare stocked parts. Probably half the reason I built new mtb and road bikes was to see and handle present day 'standards'.

Rear shock mounts should be standardized. You should be able to use Fox or Rockshox mounting hardware in all fs bikes and so as trunion mounts.
@frankthetankricard

That would be great. Also we have way too many shock sizes. There are probably 20+ combinations in size and stroke length. It's damn hard to get a shock to fit a specific frame, if you are thinking used it's often nearly impossible. Even with new shocks, first thing you do is narrow down the field to ones with your desired features and then chances are, if your bike is not using one of the most popular sizes, your top 3-4 choices will not even come in that size to begin with. If we just had one option for each xc, trail, enduro, downhill, and another extra size for crazy long travel frames it would be so much better for the owner. Of course I'd pick these from the existing sizes on the market to retain some level of backwards compatibility. Even though this would mean less flexibility in the design process, I think with todays technology it wouldn't be that hard to design frames around these options.

The one standard I would have said. Actually quite recently. Was the 29er wheel size.I didn't see the point in them. I was actually really hostile to them. I have previously commented in other videos. I may have been wrong. As I now have a 29er hardtail and is pretty much the only bike I have ridden since getting it. Including road rides. I have rode my road once since getting my 29er.

You might get converted once you try 29 - I'm pretty late at the game, 2021 got my first alu 29 frame, now in early 2022 have assembled two carbon ones - and the third is on the way, plus two other alu ones. The quality of feel on trails, roots, bumps, and the lesser rolling resistence - with no real disadvantage - with the bike feeling like it's flying - all made me a believer.

Rockshox’ “Torque Cap” should have become the standard front axle dropout. We missed the boat on that one. Another one that’s objectively better but doesn’t seem to get the market: Shimano’s center (centre?) lock disks is just a more elegant design.

Some standards that could be improved are : 1. Improving front and rear suspension service life and serviceability. It's crazy having to service the suspension every so many hours and changing seals etc all the time. External bleed ports, oil draining etc would also go a long way towards improving serviceability 2. Having pivot and other bearings that can be re-greased easily through grease nipples like a car bearing, thereby eliminating the need to disassemble everything every single time, 3. In general making parts that are easy to service using standard tools. An example is shimano, who require special plastic tools for their pedals, bottom brackets etc, not to mention their latest release XTR and other Flat pedal maintenance requirements. In order to get to the axle and bush etc you need to undo all 20 pedal pins just to be able to get to the axle removal bolt. Who wants to do that, no matter how good the pedals might be, which from experience, shimano pedals certainly are not. 4. Eliminating fine threads on aluminium parts which strip at the slightest misdemeanour on the users part, 5. Stop changing standards where the change is blatantly a marketing exercise aimed at creating product obsolescence/targeting the upgrade brigade, and has no real benefit to the consumer other than relieving them of some of their hard earned money.

Standards: My 2000 Trek has lots of odd (aka Trek and Klein only) sizes! 1.75in IS caliper mount (vs 2in standard) on the frame and 29.2mm seatpost. The rear caliper is a mash up of adapters and the seatpost has a shim down to a 27.2mm post. Saying that, I had a SRAM DUB BB and cranks in the cupboard and they fit no problem - long live threaded BBs in every sense.

Funny that you mention the problem with stripped brake bolt threads. Just got a new bike where the threads came out first time loosened the brake bolts. Since i didnt wanna wait another 6 months for a new frame on warranty i installed helicoil threads in it. Steal bolts in aluminium threads is a real gamble at any time. Bikes should come with preinstalled thread inserts.

I‘ve never though about that the same happened with steerer tubes twice. First they are made bigger and then settle somewhere in between. Interesting stuff. What I‘d love to see is a standard approach to make dropper posts lighter (and neater). Like what BMC does but standardised. It does not really make sense to have tube in tube in another tube. A dropper post should just use the whole seat tube and have an adjustable upper stop to set the seat height.

International Standard brake mounts should come back. Simple to build into a frame, and the thread goes into the caliper so you can't strip the frame.

Freehub splines is something I'd like to see standardised. Or at least each manufacturer have one design with just widths to suit the number of gears on the block. Currently as you know for sram depending on the amount of teeth on the biggest sprocket you need a different spline pattern, in both 11 speed and 12. It would make buying new wheels soooooo much easier.

Disagree with you regarding seatposts, and to a lesser extent Super-boost. I think 27.2mm posts can still have a place on XC bikes, as there's a comfort advantage with fixed seatposts, however for every bike that is built around a dropper post 34.9mm is objectively better. Dropper post designers consistently say that 34.9 posts are way more reliable, especially as dropper posts are getting longer, and especially on bikes with slacker (i.e.

Instead of pushing super boost, which makes some sense to create a stiffer and more robust wheel laterally, manufacturers could just use cross-laced rims like on BMX bikes. The spoke holes are meant for the oppsite side of the hub flange and with the dedicated offset of each rim you'd increase the flange width virtually instead of actually widen the rear frame. It would keep the frames lighter and easier to allign in the maufacturing process. H+Son did that with their "Todestrieb" which I own but they gave out after years of torture unfortunately. Very very sturdy nevertheless.

Got a reply email from GMBN Tech concerning the uploader not functioning. I first addressed the issue I checked the ad blocker which had no effect. I then checked my Norton maybe blocking it, not that either. I also tried it on various browsers as I mostly use Brave and it is known to block some sites, but sadly the other browsers showed the same issue. I haven't given up and If I discover the problem I will note it here, but thx to GMBN Tech for sending me the email reply, and Doddy for addressing it on here also.

#AskGMBNTech I know 15mm is the standard for the front axle but can you please explain why we don't we see 20mm thru-axles on the new "super enduro" 38mm ZEB and FOX and 37mm Mezzer forks? The new 38mm and 37mm stanchion forks are designed to be stronger and stiffer which seems to be a good thing for fast dh/enduro riding right? Wouldn't it make sense to continue that trend and make the thru-axle stiffer? As you have mentioned there seems to be a "stiffness sweet spot" for wheels and bars, would a 20mm thru-axle be too stiff as opposed to the standard 15mm? Also why is the rear axle 12mm and not 15mm?? Logically a thicker thru axle would make the rear end stiffer thus reducing lateral flex and resulting in better tracking and cornering at speed. Please offer your thoughts/opinions.

Super Boost plus is too wide for MTB including for the plus size tires. Boost is wide, but maybe is necessarily wide given the the rising popularity of 12-cog rear cassettes. Even so, the rear wheel's spoking still suffers a lot of dish to provide clearance for the many cogs. With the large amount of dish on the rear wheel, the spokes on the side of the disc brake rotor are in excessively light tension, making a weaker wheel assembly. And that is where there is room for some improvement, an asymmetrical spoke setup on the rear wheel. Using 24 spokes in semi-tangent cross-4 pattern on the cassette side and 12 spokes in radial (not crossed) pattern on the disc brake rotor side allows for suitably high tension on all spokes, and results in a stronger wheel assembly. Using Sapim CX Ray spokes and a wide carbon rim will keep it adequately light in weight regardless the use of 36 spokes at the rear.

What industry standard winds me up? The 15mm through axle! WTH, the industry standard prior to the 15mm was the 20mm through axle, which makes much more sense for long travel, single crown forks. IMO, a 15mm TA is fine for an XC or short travel trail fork but was a step backward for the most part.

Oh the irony of being a clydesdale rider and for years struggling with parts that break as they are not really designed for someone of 120kg, even though the industry had us believe otherwise. Now they are strengthening parts for Ebikes, which are just 10kg heavier than a normal bike. Go figure. Sounds like an admission of sorts by the bike industry, or is it really just marketing again to try and get people to upgrade 😁The bigger irony is that I have upgraded some of my parts to ebike strength parts and still have them break when they really shouldn't. Case in point is the Ebike rated wheel I bought specifically because it was supposedly strengthened for the additional weight and power of an ebike by using more and thicker spokes as well as bigger double row bearings in the hub and freehub together with a steel freehub and stronger ratchet system. Needless to say the bearings and freehub lasted all of one month and was replaced under warranty, only to be broken again and finally demanded a refund.

At 2:46, did Doddy just stay "a little bit too stiff"? Isn't "improved stifness" the ethereal holy light and saviour of all things in the bike industry (or maybe the PR industry)? Boost standart axles quote "improved stifness", pressfit bottom-brackets claim "improved stifness" - and huge rear chain-stays which interfere with large front sprockets - are developed with the same slogan in head. In my 30 years of riding bikes I haven't ever ridden a bike about which I could say that - hmmm, a lovely bike, I'd fancy a bit more stifness. WTF? Another idiocy is the internal routing.. WHY? 300% more faffing when installing (both in regard to shifters and brakes), worse quality of shifting (long spans of housing actually contract and expand - as opposed to alu or carbon stops on the frame), worse for the weight, and in the name of what? THE LOOKS? Please, god, un-create it.

would also like to see the current post mounts go obsolete. Ideally i want my frame and lowers to last for decades so i hate fiddling with brakes as i feel (perhaps erroneously) like im slowly wearing out the lifespan on the threads. I feel like im being forced to use bigger rotors and 4 bolt adaptors to get around this.

Centerlock discs - the idea is cool but once you try to open them with a bottom bracket tool it just slips and makes the job harder. Even if it does work it saves about 2 min on a job I do semi annually. Went for 6bolt with a new wheelset. Then what's wrong with the old IS mount for brakes ? Where we ever needed pm when there is a way to move the treads to the adaptor. So when the threads go bad you can buy a small piece of aluminium instead of machining new threads to your fork. One more - chainrings and bolt patterns. In my orbea there's some uncommon 76 bcd asymmetrical cranks so when the chainring is worn I must only hope I still can find one, or get new cranks as well. There seems to be very little one can buy without atleast an hour of intensive googling in the world of biking.

Why do we call different size mountain bike parts 'standards'? They aren't 'standards' and were never meant to be. They are just merely different size parts. Ever been to an auto parts store? Pick a part, any part, there is a whole mess of the same part that won't fit more than one car. For example, need a water pump? The pump that fits a Toyota won't fit a Honda or GM or Ford or ... Nobody in the automotive industry complains about that. When you buy a bike you are buying a system of components. Why should we expect those components to fit every other bike? Don't like super boost, buy a different bike. I'm not trying to be harsh, but I just don't get why mountain bikers in general feel like every bike part should be interchangeable. When you buy a new automobile you would never expect the wheels from your current one to fit it. So why do we think the wheels on our current bike should fit the new bike? If you are trying to save money, then buy a bike with the same size parts and your set.

Agreed. This video is really harmful to innovation. Doddy sounds like an old man clinging to his 31.8 bars, 31.6 dropper, Boost, etc... He needs to wake up and understand that sizes are determined by people's needs and the materials used. Steel, Aluminum, and Titanium seat tubes come in different inside diameters, so if you make them all the same, you go small and shim the other two. A short 60 kg rider needs 26" wheels and skinny bars while a 6'2" 110 kg likely needs something more substantial. And what about different disciplines... the needs of a dirt jumper are significantly different than an XC racer. Doddy you should be ashamed of yourself for dismissing Superboost and the rest of these opinions.

Standards esp head angles. Just how do you expect to make a standard for the different shades of grey? Redbull manic down mountain bikes being chased down a slope by an avalanche of dust want 60 deg (vaguely called slack). Sheep worrying ebikes want 62 deg. ordinary users who want a comfy bike around town like a broad range 72 to 67 deg. Fortunately offset headraces exist to improve the guess bike manufacturers who are following some fashion push out. Saddles 99% of saddles are uncomfortable, fortunately after decades of hit and miss Ergon came out with and actual comfortable saddle which has rapidly been redesigned as some young designer wanted the next tweak to be in production. All other products should be subjected to a series of rampage descents to see what breaks (carbon wheels and handlebars are sure fracture) then given a standard rampage survived stamp

Good show, Doddy. But can you lose the background music? Distracts from your presentation.

Don’t get too attached to the seat tube standards. Fully expect square seat tubes in the future. That will reduce dropper part count, add strength, and solves several other issues. It’s not 1975 with only round tubes available. Hydro formed aluminum and carbon don’t care about round tubes… And sorry Doddy, you’re too polite; press fit BBs are horrible! They were a weak attempt by manufacturers to save a few bucks on frames and drive most riders nuts. (Good mechanics are hard to find…)

They're actually not that bad - after installing my first three ones - I haven't actually ridden for sevferal years any of them to speak of long-term - but as long as they can fit Hollowtech II or the similar standard from Truvativ - they're pretty much the equivalent of headsets going from threaded to non-threaded, except for 100X more load and stress. One thing which is god-awful is the exaggerated width of rear chain-stays which don't allow to fit the front sprocket size you want, pushing to go with max. 36T. Maybe I'd like to ride my MTB on the road - and 44 or even 48T would be preferred - nope, not happening. You bought your new frame for several k - and all you get is max 36T. All in the name of ... PR.

Can we please stop calling them standards? At this point they are almost all proprietary.
