The EAS still scares me, not as much now but when I was a kid omg it would TERRIFY ME. I watch these complications so I can learn more about the system and how it started. It’s interesting to see how it’s changed. It was a lot more tame back in the 60s than it is now LOL!

Interesting. I never knew that the current tone from the EAS was used all the way back in the 1970s.

The change was made as part of a big package of reforms, which were made in the wake of 1971's infamous cock-up where a false alarm was mistakenly issued by an air force base, with the correct codeword and everything (the real message needed to come with a different codeword than the test message), and the cancellation didn't successfully come until after they got the cancellation codeword wrong _six times._

You probably know this already, but the current tone was chosen specifically because of how unpleasant it is to the human ear. This ensures that it gets your attention when you hear it.

The EBS logo at 8:20 looks really outdated even for 1980. :-/ The oscilloscope at 9:23 is cool. It lets you see the actual waveform of the audio tones.

0:17 & 1:22 - KDKA 1020-AM & WMAQ-TV Ch. 5 (as the Emergency Action Notification System, 1969 & 1972) 2:02 - KNUS 98.7-FM (now as the Emergency Broadcast System, 1977) 1:04:44 - WHO-TV Ch. 13 (Emergency Broadcast System, 1996, final tape recording) Now as of January 1, 1997, the Emergency Alert System that replaced the Emergency Broadcast System, that also replaced the EBS tests on Television and scares people with the sound to this day. (In 2021, in Los Angeles, I believe KTLA or KCAL made a test for the first time in 25 years)

19:03 - This is KTTV. No other station (KCBS/KNXT, KNBC or KABC had this red backround.)

Same here, I always thought I was the only one that had such a reaction to these. Like I know they are supposed to make you stop and listen, but they literally made my skin crawl and gave me this weird terror feeling. Eek! Remember though: this is ONLY A TEST. 😊

The reality about the EAS is that you are supposed to be afraid of it. Since it’s the EMERGENCY ALERT System, it means to alert you of an incoming danger; it’s meant to catch your attention; that’s why it has the scary tone, as a warning. Listening to the alert sound too many times makes it less attention catching.

There's an Emergency Broadcast System training video here on KZfaq for broadcasters in North Carolina from 1990. The opening of the video is a speech from then President George H.W. Bush thanking all broadcasters for their efforts to keep the public safe in the event of an emergency.

53:10 KNBC should be KMBC. This is an ABC affiliate for the Kansas City area, and should be listed as Kansas City, MO. The only other station that serves KC from Lawrence is KMCI.

1969 one is not that scary, tone is just of those tones you hear on a non-EAS weather alert on like NBC nowadays.

Where are you getting this information? You are conflating WCBS-TV and it's present WLNY's license in Riverhead as one. 6:17 is for the New York City CBS station.

Sounds like it's the results of some sort of deterioration on the VHS tape or whatever media that was recorded on. You can also hear this periodic vibrato in the voice if you listen close enough, which is why I am assuming it's either the media, or the player that it was run through.
