To be fair (for clarity, this is NOT a chromebook defense. I was subjected to using one for a year, and I now have to take multiple medications for my trauma), Minecraft has gotten extremely bulky in recent years. It doesn't matter how simple the graphics are anymore, so many things are going on at once, it's VERY impressive that something as simple as a phone can run it at a good 30 - 60 fps.

I use Shadow VM for most gaming, Picked up a 200$ chromebook to run the app. Basically just using it as a thin client. I also run it on my phone with a handheld controller. I know I know the first thing people go to is latency, shadow has done alot of work on their infrastructure and r&d on eliminating latency. While its impossible to remove it is very possible to make unnoticeable. I have been able to run everything from StarCraft Multi-player to PC VR streaming to an Oculus Quest with no notable Latency Issues. Shadow is the best of the current streaming solutions because they actually have done the legwork. I would never say to game on a chromebook natively but streaming works perfectly. I also have ran it with as little as 5mb/s connection so its not an issue with internet speed. If you ever had a bad taste with streaming solutions before don't let that sour shadow, its definitely worth it. My entire steam library is available on the go. The only downside is if there is an internet outage or an update being pushed then yea your gonna have a bad day but in the 3 years I've been a subscriber thats happened so little that I can't say its been a major issue.

unless your actively looking for a stronghold, your chances of randomly finding one are 1 in 100 without the use of ender eyes as compasses. Not terrible odds, but due to how worlds are generated; the stronghold could be half buried underwater in a deep ocean with half of it full of water. I would LOVE to see the trash fire try to run Terraria. You have a more streamlined goal since worlds actually do have limits, there's a lot of cosmetics, and getting end-game gear allows for more decorative options along with each boss you beat allowing you to further your goal. But seeing this footage, and knowing Terraria (especially with the journey's end update) is probably even more demanding, I wouldn't be surprised to see a chromebook run at 1 FPS playing it. Let's make a bet, I bet a full 9 dollars and 99 cents (base price for Terraria) that a non-modified chrome book cannot run Terraria above a stable 20+ FPS in frame rates.

my aunt bought me a chromebook when i asked her for a laptop for playing WoW, so i was pissed, but i ended up figuring out how to run the built in Linux to create a windows VM so i could play and i ended up doing some serious raiding, but the game ran at 5 fps, crashed frequently, and it would freeze for 5 seconds everytime you targeted something or cast a spell. great gaming machine 10/10

Some years ago 'Gaming' with 10-25 FPS was normal with the laptops my mother got me as a teenager. Yup, integrated GPU on what was actually supposed to be basic(Probably cheap) laptops, also running on HDD's in those years. Playing minecraft and web browser flash games, which were really cool to me back then.

I actually got a chromebook as a *personal* laptop, so I would use it for school and for games. Minecraft for me was: First spend 3 hours reviewing every inch of the internet to find out how you can even download minecraft, then after seeing how you get about 5 - 10 fps even on minimum settings, spend another 2 hours trying to find out how to put optifine into minecraft, then spend ANOTHER 2 hours trying to figure out why it isn't working. Then, after still getting at the highest 20 fps with the lowest settings, try playing servers. Oops, either you play combat minigames on 1.16 or not play them at all because you can't run 1.8.9 on Linux, then lastly suck it up and play your survival minecraft 1.16 world at 20 fps Edit: I got so sick of it that I got a new laptop (Macbook pro M1), and its safe to say that to get my laptop to that quality would require the highest settings (except render distance which would be at 20 chunks), medium shaders, and a 1024x pack. To say the difference was night and day wouldn't do it justice.

We use chrome books at our HighSchool and usually everything’s blocked, but we got 2 websites, one that sets up a server, and one that is the actual game, unblocked for now. It’s an old version, like 2013, before elytra.

I have a friend who only has a chromebook, he plays Torem online all the time. When you're used to consistant frames, it's very hard to use anything under 10. When 10 or less is everything you've known, you learn to adapt to it. Is gaming on a Chromebook playable Yes. Is gaming on a Chromebook enjoyable? FAT NO!

Hey! While I do completely agree with your statement, low-end gaming is still possible on a chromebook! You can natively install proper Linux distros and run minecraft at 60fps (As I have done on my chromebook which I no longer use).

I play flash games all the time during school when we have free period but the issue is it could barley run another of the flash games at above 10 FPS unless it was a very VERY simple game.

Tip: turning biome blend to 0 massively increases your fps.

when I was 13, I asked my mom for a gaming laptop for Christmas. So Christmas rolls around, and I see under the tree there is a laptop box, so me being the naive 13 y/o kid I was back then, I got extremely hyped. so I take it out of the box and notice it says "chrome" in the top left corner.... I had heard rumors that Chromebooks were bad, but I kept my hopes up because I thought my mom knew a thing or two about this stuff, I opened up Roblox as a test run to see what it could handle, I joined a game and had over 1000 ping with I'd say about 4 fps. So I tried to play it off like I actually liked what my mom had bought me since it was my first laptop. To this day, I still use a Chromebook, not the same one, but a Chromebook nonetheless. I'm only 14 now so I can't really complain about what I get cause I need to be thankful I have it in the first place, but damn, Chromebooks are the true scum of the earth, there is no point for them to even exist, my mom told me that she would only get Chromebooks if she were to go shopping for new laptops, because "it's simple to use". So my mom is one of those die-hard Chromebook fanatics who won't even look at windows, even if it's better in every aspect. *when I turn 16 I'm gonna get a job and immediately buy a gaming pc*.

Better idea: install Windows on your Chromebook for more performance. Older Chromebooks do often have the ability to have their UEFIs reflashed with a normal one that works with Windows.

The reason why the game started at night time is because in the loading screen the game is still running but you cant move, in game time is still running and so is player data like health and hunger, it took 10 minutes according to him, which for the time it is in the game, it's just about right, thats how late it would be in minecraft in 10 minutes

Just a bit of context: The linux-beta is not native linux. It's closer to a VM, that's why the performance is shitty. I'd be curious to see how it plays on Crouton (which directly uses the kernel bundled in with chromeOS). As a data point of my own, I play games like Dark Souls PtD edition, Pillars of Eternity and Crusader Kings 2 a fair amount on my Acer C740 Chromebook (albeit running full linux, not ChromeOS) when I'm not near my desktop and the performance is pretty decent (depending on the game I can play at 30-50 FPS on low-medium). I haven't tried Minecraft, but I'd be very surprised if it only gave me 5 FPS. It's not the hardware, the problem is the fact that Linux-beta is a VM. (Of course, ChromeOS shouldn't sell itself as a gaming laptop. That's just stupid. But it is possible to game on a chromebook if you're willing to get rid of ChromeOS)
