This Halloween season’s biggest theatrical release is The Exorcist Believer, a brand new exorcist requel to the original horror movie classic directed by the late William Friedkin.
As the Exorcist Believer official trailer has previewed, not one but two main characters are possessed by the devil this time around.
David Gordon Green (Halloween, Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends) directed the brand new sequel to The Exorcist for Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek that will pave the way for a new exorcist reboot trilogy. This first film in the trilogy will be released theatrically on October 6, 2023, with Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Raphael Sbarge, and Jennifer Nettles starring. The film faces stiff competition from Saw X and another Blumhouse horror movie Five Nights at Freddys. The exorcist believer reaction is expected to be mixed.
As a filmmaker, David Gordon Green has a fair amount of experience in delivering horror movie follow-ups that aim to get back to the greatness of the originals. Most recently, he delivered an entire Halloween trilogy, directly following the classic John Carpenter film and picking up with Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode 40 years later in 2018’s Halloween, before continuing the horror in Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. Now he’s possessed with the notion of presenting a direct sequel to The Exorcist 1973 classic that terrified audience and created an entire sub-genre in the process.
The challenge for The Exorcist Believer, then, was to create something with a similarly domestic feeling to the original, while acknowledging that demonic possessions have been a horror movie staple for five decades now. The exorcist believer trailer reaction indicates this may be an issue.
The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s Exorcist 2: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist 3: Legion.
More recently, The Exorcist became a short-lived television series at Fox, which was surprisingly excellent and cleverly took place in the same world as the original classic.
Universal has announced that a sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, will hit in theatres in April 2025 and compete with Scream 7.
