There is a small lesson here for both experienced rock tumblers and learners alike. This just happened to me this morning, one of my rubber rock tumbling barrels blown up like a balloon!
I was really quite nervous about popping the lid off but in fact it wasn't so bad, just gave me a fright!
On the strength of this I have decided not to apply for a job in bomb disposal LOL!
Seriously this is not so uncommon and is either down to one or two of the rocks giving off gas or any additive such as soap or thickeners. If this occurs to you, take care and drape a heavy cloth over the barrel lid to stop things flying about.
Please enjoy my discomfort!

Gasses usually come from acidic out put. sometimes just adding some sodium carbonate can stop the gas build up.

Lol. Barrels off gas. Usually the liquid and grit just gushes out. To prevent this which can warp the barrel. Always open the lid and gasket after tumbling then put back on. SURPRISING it has only just been doing it. I have " exploded" several of my 6 barrels multiple times.

very interesting, as a matter of interest I had decided that this phenomenon might be caused by aluminium grits or polish interacting with soap. Do you think this might be the cause of your problems? I don't know for sure but since I stopped using soap I have not had this problem.

I was tensed up waiting for it to blow the lid off. My daughter left some chicken soup in her Thermos the last day of school and I had a fun time opening it a few days later. The lid, and soup, hit the kitchen ceiling. :-)

I am so glad my barrel wasn't as bad as that! Mind you I'm not sure which is worse, soup or slurry on the ceiling? 🙄

Geez Steve.. I would have never thought of a gas build up in a barrel.. I will have to keep and eye out.. though I do not use soap but I do use borax at times.. Well, carry on! thanks again for the heads up!

Hi George, Luckily I had read about this but not seen it. My suspicion is that it's the soap but I will keep track of my tumbles and see if in the future I can work out what it is. I must say it got the old ticker going a bit. Cheers!

Interesting Steve. I just took off two barrels yesterday that were completely swollen up. One had actually lost the washer and nut and had it’s base completely extended but strangely enough the cap remained in place and it didn’t leak all the slurry. My rocks were from the Thames river bed, I wonder was there gas within the rocks like you say?

Hi Fergal, I am really interested in this, There was nothing unusual about the rocks I tumbled and when I continues at the polishing stage no problem. Can you tell me if you were using Silica carbide or Auminium oxide grit and were you using soap? I have two barrels coming to the end of a run soon and when they are done i hope to run a few experiments to see if I can replicate the problem. I am guessing you have Evans rubber barrels and the o-ring held the lid in place? Cheers!

Obsidian is notorious for outgassing during tumbling, with or without additives. Did you have any in the barrel?

Hi, thanks for this, I'm not sure. This load is on its final polishing stage with no sign of gassing up. I will check when finished and get back to you. Thanks again!

i have this happen all the time in the central Queensland Australian heat. I use warm to hot water when loading the barrels now this causes the opposite effect.

Hi Dennis, this is a first for me so I wonder if it is the rocks you are tumbling or do you add anything like soap all the time? I have used borax a lot with no problem but I rarely use soap. Hot water, that means you have negative pressure when it cools every time, doesn't that distort the barrel each time? Anyhoo much fun, cheer!

this happens in my tumblers all the time, if i don’t release pressure every 24 hrs they will explode, loud as a gunshot, and slurry makes a huge mess. currently trying to find remedies for this problem.

Hi Madeline, as a matter of interest do you use aluminium oxide with soap. I had wondered if that was the cause in mine. I do not use any additives in my barrels now just using plastic beads at the pre-polish and polishing stage and get great results. Let me know how you get on, best of luck

It might be the type of water you use Try using distilled water in the barrel. Water is a chemical and depending on the pH might react to chemicals leaching from a stone.
