SANTIAGO, CHILE -
For years, Santiago has been known as one of the most modern and developed capital cities in South America. It is home to the continent's tallest skyscraper and plays an important role as Chile's economic center.
However, with some civil unrest in 2019 an ongoing social crisis in the country, a lot has changed.
Join me on my first adventure in Santiago where I explore both sides of the city that are extremely different from each other...

I have visited cities around the world. In every city there are nice rich areas and poor ugly areas. If you go to New York you will be told by the taxi drivers not to pass street 75 in Manhatan, not to adventure into Queens or The Bronx. If you go to the ouskirts of Paris you will find poverty, even in cities like Munich in Germany, there are neighbourhoods where the Turkish live that looks like any old suburb of Latin America. In Las Vegas, if you walk a few block beyond the Las Vegas Boulevard, and the tourist atractions, and see how the workers of Las Vegas actually live, then you will feel that you are in neibourhood of Santiago Chile that people is recommending to visit to experience "reality". I think is unfair insist in talking about inequality in Chile an enfasizing it to tarnish somehow the good image of Chile. However I undertand why people contrary to free market economies insist in talking about it. Simply because is no much negativity to mention about Chile. Other that "inequality". The mighty USA is now facing a downturn in quality of living. The big cities are sufering homelessness as never before. Rubish is piling in the street that before were clean and tidy. Chile in the other hand is doing well regarding standard of living and reducing poverty. Many of the current problems that Chile is experiencing now are clearly aumented by the uncontrolled influx of migrant from poorer countries. Some of them are undocumented and also delincuents. The government of Chile is changing laws to push them back to where they came from. But is not an easy task. And they have done considerable damage to the Chilean society regarding insecurity, corruption, narcotrafiking, ilegal prostitution, home invasions, assault of policemen, destruction of property, assaults on supermarket, total destruction of infraestructure such as many Metro stations during the riots of 2019, etc. But Chile is working hard to recover from the ilegal entries and continue the route of progress. Inquality is not necessarely a bad thing. Because a country that has very rich people and people that live around them is always a better country than one where the rich do not exist so much and they are surrounded by an ocean of poverty, hunger and lack of basic services. What is the situation of the so called "egalitarian" countries that some people admire.

The fact that you know so well how bad the situation is in the US, should be an indicator that Chile's problems are not unfairly brought to attention. It happens with every country, relax man.

@@regenen However the situation for everyone in Chile is much better than in the rest of Latin América. And in some indicators such as Public Health and urbanization it is better than the US. Even the expectations on years of life is better in Chile than the US. Because the chances of getting killed by a lunatic are almost not existing in Chile.

I agree. Chile was by far the most modern and developed country I’ve been to in Latin America. And if I forgot to mention it in the video, I also actually felt safer there than I do in the US. But at the end of the day, this video is about Santiago and not about the US 😅

What you say in the 14:30 it’s true. We are a lot closed down and we respect a lot more order and privacy than the average Latinoamérica country. We have a lot of cultural clashes with the inmigrants from Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Haití because they are too noisy and don’t respect privacy and public order. In fact, when you were eating the cazuela and treated the lady with that “mi amor”, the old man next to you told you you are not in plaza de armas because treating a stranger woman like that is disrespectful and only used if you are talking to a prostitute. She didn’t tell you anything because she probably asume that you visited some Caribbean countries where that is normal, but here is disrespectful af

Yeah, you can stay in las Condes and some parts of Providencia if you want a nice and safe neighborhood that’s close to the rest of the city and easily accessible with public transporte (use and app called Moovit in that case). The teleférico (aerial tram or whatever the name is) is in cerro San Cristobal, it’s a park called parque metropolitano which is at the north side of las condes and providencia. Parque metropolitano includes this teleférico, a zoo and some other things. If you go to the city center, be aware of pickpockets and people looking at you suspiciously, just like any big city in the world. If you like to do sports, I would highly suggest that you go hiking to a mountain like cerro Manquehue, it has a fantastic view. Write me down if you have another question, happy to awnser

As a Bachelor of Political Science and Public Administration and soon-to-be Public Administrator, I believe it's interesting to know a few things about Chile. Here are some points: 1. The center of Santiago wasn't always filled with graffiti and street vending. While this issue has persisted for years, uncontrolled immigration combined with the large protests in 2019 led to a significant deterioration in the quality of life in the city center. 2. Chile experienced its economic golden years in the 2000s. However, it's true that the momentum from the high prices of raw materials gradually diminished. Without sustained economic growth, the population began to feel increasing frustration over inequality, especially considering that some have access to quality education and healthcare while others do not. 3. Approximately 40% of Chile's population lives in Santiago, but you can also visit other cities like Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, as well as Concepción. These cities have around one million inhabitants each. 4. It's important to note that the issue of graffiti and dirtiness is not solely a cultural one. Even in wealthier areas, these problems occur. However, significant amounts of money are invested in cleaning the streets because each municipality has its own resources, and some are much wealthier than others. saludos desde chile

Another point I forgot to mention is that the informality rate is actually a significant indicator of the well-being of an economy. In the USA, it is approximately 6%, while in Chile, it reaches around 30%. In other Latin American countries, it can be as high as 40% to 50%.

I think you are wrong. Beacause if you compare the "inequality" of Chile with the "equality" of its neighbour countries. Especially if you visit the "dangerous areas" of the other countries, then an only then you will be able to understand that the "inequality" that you are talking about is just a word. To eliminate inequality does not help anyone. On the contrary it destroy the posibilities of really help the most disadvantage people. In reality what is really important is to eliminate poverty. That is, and should be the priority. If you are really serious about helping the poor and not just defend a socialist ideology that has not demostrated any real benefit in giving people a better living, fereedom, and oportunities for personal progress.

Yes, you're eating the Cazuela right, most people cut everything up and mix it first. Yes, Santiago is extremely unequal, although Chile in general is very unequal, not all of Chile is AS unequal as Santiago is. No, Chileans are not more reserved, Santiaguinians are, it has to do a lot with the security crisis, people are scared out of their minds with the mafias in Santiago.

Please learn to say the formal "usted" and not "tu" to older people, it is extremely rude and offensive to address a senior person as "tu".

After spending some time in Santiago here's what I'd say: 1) It's not an extraordinarily "fun" city. 2) It doesn't have much of a bustling atmosphere like other capitals. 3) It has incredibly underrated food (Sushi & Peruvian spots are exceptional) 4) Impressive architecture & infrastructure (for a Latin American country) 5) A safer feel than other Latin American capitals Santiago is definitely worth visiting if you're traveling in South America, but I wouldn't get on a plane from the other side of the world just to see it

The person who talks about those who have money, that is typical of those who sit back and do nothing for their future, the opportunities are there, you just have to work.

Do you know what? the typical and common "chileno" always is going to say the same thing. BUT THEY DON'T SAY THAT THE GARBAGE AND THE GRAFFITI are all over the City is NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE POOR, IS BECAUSE THEY THINK IS "COOL". MOST THE GRAFFITEROS ARE HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUT STUDENTS AND THAT DON'T GO TO SCHOOL INSTEAD THEY BUY CANS OF SPRAY AND PAINTS EVERYTHING AND EVERYWHERE AND " TAG" THE WHOLE CITY WITH POLITICAL( LEFTY) LEMMAS THAT NOBODY READ. THE POVERTY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CLEAN NEIGHBORHOOD, THE POOR AS WELL RICH PEOPLE, CAN CLEAN, AND BEAUTIFY THEIR ENVIRONMENT IF THEY WANT TO.

Adam u have more poverty in cities in the US. Chile is well developed country and we are not a lowcost country like u gringos like to visit, where u can flash & splash your dollars. Chile is actually the second most visited country in South America regarding tourism.
