An increasing number of scientific studies suggest that food, like drugs or alcohol, can have addictive qualities. Food addiction is a disease which causes loss of control over the ability to stop eating certain foods. Three people share their personal experiences and how they came through. Recorded on 03/13/2018. [7/2018] [Show ID: 33583]

I'm so glad this is getting attention. Many of us need help overcoming food addiction and most of society does not understand it and just simplifies it as an ugly weakness. Also, it's not only sugar, it's high calorie salty, high fat, processed foods as well.

Carb addiction... Took me 3 months to break it, cold turkey. Like heroin, no going back once clean. Went to a ketogenic diet and weight training, lost 25kg, now weight stable. One ice cream, one bag of chips, one chocolate bar and I need a 48 hour fast to stop craving carbs. If I am the usual "could be obese person" there is no "everything in moderation" line that works. But, after 2 years, ice cream, chocolates, potatoes, cakes are no longer a visual trigger. Hard initially, but easy after time.

When the woman at the end speaks about neutrality with food, rather to hyper focusing on the experience: Yes!! Completely agree. There is a difference between being mindful and becoming completely entrenched in every aspect of the experience. I also find that to be triggering and not helpful. I feel best when I chew throughly, have something that is live giving, and exactly what my body needs at the time, and acknowledge that whatever I’m having is to serve a specific purpose ie to energize, benefit digestion, help me relax, etc Not to get super obsessive about every detail Thank you for uploading, it’s so great to see that people care, and are working together to help people overcome this problem

Thank you for sharing your stories. I’m a food addict, in 12 step program and had sleeve surgery 3 yrs ago. I lost 25lbs thru Overeaters Anonymous and 70lbs after the sleeve surgery BUT I still struggle. Recently I regained 30lbs so I’m back in program, eating as my bariatric surgeon prescribed AND going to a therapist and a nutritionist. Recovery is a lifestyle not a end goal. I’ve lost 5lbs so far and I know that before I go to far down the rabbit hole I need to reach out and be proactive. Food addiction is the primary addiction for many people with drug and alcohol addiction. I hear that in lots of meeting that once the addict is clean of drugs/booze they start to remember when they “used” food as a child.

This is a great post. The soul hungers for true soul-spirit balm (interest, creativity, love, mercy, empathy for others)....but the survival brain & our consumer cult(ure) form a habitual neuropathway to cut off this uncomfy pilgrimage & quest, with a stack of greasy in- your- face pizzas! The terrific thing about any addiction, affliction, betrayal, loss, wound, brokenness- is that they crack us open to the vaster cosmos, divine beauty, our soul's true reality, the suffering of others who call to us for help. Just putting a fresh basin of water out each day for thirsty wildlife is a start to connecting to the greater communion of life, which the industrial age lopped out (no wonder people are hungry). Then wildflowers for bees, trees for birds, people to share with can expand the communion. Listen if you get a chance to Dr Gabor Maté. Tons of great talks on this plight of our time & very accessible balms to heal & find joy.

I hope we become more aware of this as a culture. I feel like when you decline food, people assume you’re only concerned about weight and try to push you to lighten up and just have a bite or start describing how good it is so you’ll try it. They don’t realize that just having that little bit will send you into your addiction cycle. I think ppl just don’t know but it can be really rude.

Here because I've been following the Grey Sheet Anonymous plan for 8 days. I've seriously become disinterested in food. Seems to be working... I'm learning what my particular food triggers are and staying away from them. I to had mentioned that I was addicted to food or that my compulsion to eat was like being addicted to medical professionals and I don't remember any of them agreeing with it. I am no longer a volume eater due to the Duodenal Switch Bariatric surgery, I started out at 400 lbs, lost 115 lbs, , still had about 150 lbs to go. However after the surgery I had slipped into eating fast food, just less of it. This past year I had gained back up to 320 and severe back issues. I hit rock bottom with it and somehow found GSA. I started on 1/17/21 and have already lost 13 lbs. But most importantly, the food has lost its hold on me. The mental clarity I feel not eating sugar or starches has really opened my eyes, but it was difficult.... but it is so eye opening. My overeating started around the age of 6 I think to calm my ADHD and anxiety. But it really blew up when I was molested from the ages of 7-9. I ate because it numbed me. I ate to stuff down the feelings. I ate to make myself unattractive, the bigger I got the stronger I felt. But knowing the reasons behind why I ate didnt help the compulsion, I didn't want to live like this, constantly fighting this? I have hope on this plan from GSA.. because my compulsion and constantly thinking of food is gone for whole days at a time! I can tell the difference in my psyche when I have slipped up and eaten the sugar or too much starch.

Karen, are you low carb or keto? If so you need 2 teaspoons of salt daily as the body's insulin levels decrease and thge kidneys excrete sodium. the 2 teaspoons of salt daily is to replace what is excreted out. You may want to watch Stephan Phinney doscuss this on youtube. Good luck.

You may want to check the salt you use. Many salts contain sugar which causes the phenomenon of craving, Sea Salt usually does not but FDA has been allowing sugar to be added to that as well. I read every label since there are literally 99 types of sugar, dextrose is usually the one that is added.

Thank you too all the speakers ur honesty has helped many. I can relate too the stories. I suffered from severe eating disorder in teen years and early twenties. My issues were starving myself, excessive exercise, purging with laxatives, fat blockers in excess, carb blockers in excess and speed. I found recovery and was in recovery for decades til around 15 years ago when I was going Thur a really tough stressful time in my life and did not seek therapy or talk with a close friend and over time started eating less and less and exercising more and more and dropped a hole lot of weight in a few months and some one I worked with and spent time with pulled me aside and expressed concern about my weight loss as it was quick in a very short time and it got my attention that maybe I was experiencing a relapse of my eating disorder and needed help which I sought. Thank u too the caring person that cared enough too say something. I never thought a relapse was possible after being in recovery for decades. I was wrong . This is a life long process.

When you constantly think about food it’s definitely an addiction and I’m addicted to food especially sweets! Mostly at night. It started right after menopause. I tried to eat less, I don’t eat junk but I do eat big quantities like a whole bar of dark chocolate, fruit tarts, cakes etc.. pastries. It’s so not so much food, but pastries . I always say no more sugar I won’t buy sweets anymore and then I end up buying something like low carb sweets ( to make me feel less guilty) etc. I’m 5.6 and 190 lbs I was size 8 when I was young after 45 years of age I became size 10 and after menopause I’m size 14 at 61 years of age. I’m ashamed to see friends I can’t wear what I like I’m always wearing sneakers and black cloths I was a beautiful woman and I ruined my body .my relationship with my husband is like a friendship rather than intimate because he doesn’t like woman having a big belly. He’s being kind asks me to take care of my self and lose weight for my health, I ended up having osteoarthritis, cholesterol and I’m also pre diabetic ! I’m trying not to consume sugar.. but I’m addicted!

I appreciate listening to everybody's story. However, it saddens me that many women believe that they have to wait to for the weight to come off first, before starting to try new things and do not permit themselves to live happily until they are skinny. You can take on new hobbies and date when you are heavier. I am not advocating for bad health, but stop limiting yourselves. Too much weight stigma in California.

Self-diagnosed with BED but I really am not sure. I sought and obtained an appointment with a psychiatrist well known for her treatment of eating disorders. The food-reward-palatability model is most useful in hyperphagia and obesity, which makes sense of the dopaminergic/opioidergic brain chemistry that mimics addiction; that said, one can overeat or binge on almost any foods, but it is clear that the hyper-palatable, low-satiating chemical profiles of many foods with the right ratios of fats, carbs, salts, etc., is whay we identify as "junk" or "comfort" or "bliss" foods. No one of these isolated, purified chemicals is an addictive drug in the same way that cocaine or heroin is--consider that an addict when confronted with an abundance of pure drug of choice will probably indulge, but when do we see a food "addict" simply eating a pile of salt or a pile of sugar cubes or a bottle of pure fat--but the chemical composition of some foods makes them more hedonic/rewarding and some people have brains more susceptible to the "addictive" response to these, thus forming a habit to obsessively/compulsively/addictively overeat/binge-eat more than a normal person. The obesogenic person who once was adaptive as famine-resistant, now in the modern food environment is maladaptive, so prevention and early diagnosis is critical in post-industrialized society. Ultimately, all people struggle with some form of vice/sin, but those tied to the biological drives for sex (lust) and substance use (gluttony) will always be common struggles as these primal urges will always live in the lower/limbic brain. God help us all!

Food addiction for long decades that results of obesity , cardiovascular ,heart attack , strokes and paralyze " well the truth is what you eat is what you gain..so My advice is this be wise to choose the right healthy food to consume you can consult the nutritionist and ask them the best dietary foods to consume ."further more still you need to to control your eating habits or craving for junk snacks .there are way to avoid addiction on food such as drinking hot beverages ,eating sour fruit, or nuts instead . As the professional said the more you eat the more complications you will gain .. so this issue are only being ignored but not being control by the body it self ..that's what I call mental health out of mind control.Itermittent fasting can reduce this condition if you do or try.. note you will not die if you eat one meal a day just you have a plenty of water to drink never die it's just a spy

Are you trying to say that big business are not creating frankenfoods and putting fat, sugar and other god knows what chemicals in foods to make us addicted to them? There have been plenty of documentaries on this and how dirty the packaged food industry is. People just don't realise/know that these companies are paying alot of money to scientists to come up with different chemicals that light up the addiction centre in your brain. There is a group that tried to get these chemicals banned and out of our foods, unfortunately they didn't succeed because these chemicals are not classed as drugs - they should be since the body has the same response to them as drugs. Joan Ifland has an excellent talk about the tobacco industry buying up alot of the food industry companies like kraft, Nabisco etc in the 80's and this is where it all started.

@@michellehashish5341 food should have no labels, if it has labels, leave it on the shelf.... there is always personal responsibility ... you don't balloon to 400 pounds on veggies & carrots

@@g.s.5868 that is what I support. Whole food plant based way of eating. Problem is people are very naive/ignorant about the way packaged foods are produced, specifically to get people addicted to them. People are also time poor. I luckily am not addicted to these foods, but I do believe in food addiction. Yes there is personal responsibility, but there is little education about these harmful additives/chemicals.

There is a reason marketing is a booming industry, so your comment is extremely reductionist.
