To be fair, the FTC is calling for the breakup of Instagram and WhatsApp from FaceBook. It's still really early in the process, but that happening would be amazing. I also deleted my Facebook and only use Instagram and am well aware that it's not that much better. You gotta pick your poisons I guess.

I don't do ads on Facebook or on KZfaq so I don't really give a damn cuz I'm nothing but a spec a tiny data point nobody cares about people like me and that's the reason why I like Facebook it's a nice big platform where you can disappear become invisible you don't exist and that is key to getting things done or not getting things done.

Then you and I are on the same boat James. I would never work with Facebook because there are so many vulnerabilities and risks involved that are not worth being responsible for. They get hacked a few times a year. It is one thing that only 50,000 accounts were compromised, but having 1 billion can risk your title. What’s worse is determining how *long ago* did that attack last for? 5 days? 3 months? 2 years? The longer the data compromise, the more information that can be sold to the black market in exchange for bitcoin (which the value continues to increase).

Facebook did an icky practice of creating "shadow accounts" for whoever you have in your device's contacts list, EVEN IF anyone in your contacts list had never, ever interacted with Facebook at all. They did that by asking your to sync your contacts list with your account I believe to find anyone that you may know. Facebook making those accounts was not explicit at all, so users wouldn't know that that was happening. Those "shadow accounts" are kind of like placeholder accounts for people that may join the site at a later time. They're also used to help find anyone you might know, as well as tying connections based on who has whose numbers. I'm not sure if Facebook still does that, but I don't doubt they're still doing it anyway. Just imagine that you yourself want nothing to do with the site, while your friend, with whom you share phone numbers on your devices' contacts lists, is on there chatting with other friends he found from syncing his contacts list. Little did both of you know, your friend unknowingly gave out your number (and very likely your name) to Facebook, and it wasn't even your friend's fault that they didn't know that would happen before syncing. That practice, those share buttons... that company has way too much reach.

I used to have a Facebook account when I was a teenager and deleted it after I graduated high school because I could see the dangers of it. I was proven correct when a university teacher of mine started naming each of my classmates's hobbies on the very first day of class. He told us that he basically googled all of our names and found everyone's Facebook pages *except* mine and a few others. I will admit, I felt very smart and smug. Fast forward about 10 years and I am now back on Facebook for work reasons. Sadly most people in my profession consider it to be the best way to stay in touch with each other and I do not have the courage to tell them that Discord exists, so here I am right back where I started. I only go on Facebook on occasions and I never post anything private on it to ensure minimal risk.

Facebook is even creepier than most people realize... they have what is called "Shadow profiles" on people. So lets say you dont use Facebook, but your mom does. Lets say she messages your sister like "Hey! remember, we are meeting up with Ben today at 10 at Outback!" Well facebook records that like "Ok so there is a person named Ben that has a relationship with your mother and sister and that person likes Outback." Well then your sister messages someone like "Hey! you got everything for Ben's B-day?" well now they put a note saying that today is your B-day. Rinse and repeat and they can know almost everything about you without you ever making an account.

Facebook appeared when I was in my mid 20's, and while lots of people jumped into that wagon right away, I didn't. Even back then, at its very beginning, there was something about FB that I didn't quite like and found suspicious. In the years to come I kept hearing from friends and family alike asking me why I didn't have a FB account and the stuff I was missing, blah, blah, blah... At some point I yielded to peer pressure and decided to try it out, but it only lasted for like 9 or 10 months; all my suspicions were pretty much confirmed and I couldn't stand how nosy the whole platform is so I deleted my account. I've never been surprised about all that nasty stuff that has come to light in recent times. FB will never change unless it is forced to and that most likely will never happen. "Move fast and break things"... Indeed, and along the way, it has wrecked the whole world.
