A Facebook whistleblower told 60 Minutes the company “picks metrics that are in its own benefit” when informing the public about hateful content and misinformation on the platform.

I deactivated my account, which I think was a weak thing to do, but I didn’t want to delete the pics. I was worried I’d lose all the wonderful things that Facebook offered when it first caught on. Ppl talking about what they did on vacation, the recipe they tried and shared with ppl on Facebook, etc. I will not reactivate it, but I don’t know what to do. My husband is very active on Facebook tho. He won’t leave it alone. It angers me. Plus, we are politically polar opposites, which is incredibly hard to deal with in general. Facebook has got to be held responsible for the hateful content and acknowledge the role they play in social discourse. It’s tearing us apart. In every way. They have to be held responsible for content that is published by its users in the same way tv news and print media is held responsible for its published content. Facebook argues that’s against the 4th amendment, but I as a user should be able to sue them for the lies that are published against ME just as I could sue a publisher over a lie in a book or slander about me on television. We the ppl need to have the power to regulate them. But Congress needs to rule that Facebook be placed in the category of being regulated just as the FCC regulates content for the public in other media formats. Then WE will have the power to regulate Facebook contact when WE sue them for the dangerous, hateful, misleading LIES they allow to be published on their platform. It’s a media platform and should be treated as such. Until then, Facebook rules our society, rules the world.

In China, they justify their censorship and bans on "protecting social harmony." If there was no Facebook people would be happier. If there was no social media....people would be happier. If no one watched ANY news channels...people would be happier. How do I know this??? Well getting old has a few good things: I remember the time before smart phones and social media. I remember a time when only older people watched the news. I was happier. My friends were happier. There wasn’t so much division. Now...only bad news is on the television. Either a cop shot someone/or a president said something that offended someone/or maybe a new hurricane hit the states/a volcano erupted killing hundreds/etc etc you get the point. How can people stay on social media or watch so much news with all the negativity is beyond me. It cripples your train of thought to think independently and freely. Now you can’t even question the narrative. Why does this not bother everyone. Free speech is free speech no matter if it’s truth/lies/disinformation/misinformation/political views both left and right. People gave social media too much power and now look what’s happening?

I made groups like they wanted, and grew them large, the biggest one 100k members. Then they perminantly suspended my account without warning, and the message literally said "We've determined that you are not eligible to use facebook. This decision is final. Unfortunately for safety and security reasons, we can't give you any additional information as to why your account was disabled." And even though I had dozens of friends as admins, somehow all the admins are blocked from the group and someone I've never met is admin now and selling merch to the group.

I remember when I first met my future wife..we both used to be on “MySpace” and I remember her telling me we need to check out this “Facebook” thing! I remember laughing to myself and thinking “Facebook”…what a stupid name!! But look at it now and the power it has gained 😳 It’s good that we have whistleblowers (as they call them) but let’s be honest; this poor woman will need to watch her back from this point onwards! She made herself a target and they will come for her 🤫 We need these people to speak out against the elite and there BS! However, I just hope….she doesn’t suddenly disappear without a trace and the get get found in a landfill OR worse still get dragged through the dirt made a laughing stick cos she dared to speak the truth against these corporate giants!!! Censoring kov1d conversations is a completely different issue. And not something Facebook should be proud of. The pandemic is a controversial subject. Facebook has picked a side and blocks dissenting views. Until now, this was the only deceitful thing I knew about Facebook. Purposely making people argue and hate each other is a whole new kind of evil. It was obvious the government was already doing this. Putting them in charge will change nothing. We should own our own algorithms.

So what's her point? Should they remove all legally protected instances of hate speech, and if so who defines what meets the criteria for removal? Whatever happened to group/user self moderation? Or a democratic user based system of reporting - so content gets removed if marked for removal for a specific reason, reaching a number equivalent to a majority of users that view the content after a certain threshold is met. For instance 51 users out of 100 who have viewed/interacted with the content flagged it for being hate speech, illegal content, misinformation etc? The world doesn't need gatekeepers and they didn't exist on the net until well after the 90's. A government that governs least, governs best.

Seems to me Facebook could simply block any content that includes certain words or phrases. Facebook doesn’t have to be the place where people get every opinion about everything. If it’s social media then keep it social not political, not medical or any topic other than relatively socially acceptable content. Don’t tell me it can’t be done.
