Bedrock Edition was Microsoft's ambitious attempt to bring all versions of Minecraft under one roof, and it worked! Except for one, annoying little problem called "Java Edition Players"

Hey bedrock players! Before you leave an angry comment, I suggest you watch the entire video throughout - it is a fair comparison and I talk about the experience of bedrock edition from the perspective of someone who has always played the java edition and why the game didn't captivate the existing java audience. Objectively, bedrock is a more popular game and I mention this quite a bit too. Little bit disheartening seeing the number of people who won't watch an entire opinion piece before getting mad and leaving a negative comment.

bedrock already has higher render-distance, support for shaders and better performance and while most players would want stuff like holding a torch in your hand to light up the area (forgot what it's called) and having item tag specific textures (what hypixel skyblock texturepacks use), it's not really necessary to get a decent framerate on a potato pc (what I mainly use these mods for) so as a whole: people wouldn't say no, but don't need it as much in the first place (sorry for bad english btw)

The thing is, every “good” thing about bedrock can be added to java in about 5 seconds if you have curseforge or modrinth. Like for example the ESSENTIAL mod adds the “ invite your friends on your world” thing with the added bonus that you can use modded/older versions of the game.

I like how this debate goes on while Mojang delivers a Bethesda-tier game on either edition and gets away with it. Don't believe me? Try running Minecraft without any of your optimization mods, yup, has it clicked yet? You have to install mods to fix the game you paid full price for. I'm not defending Bedrock edition, there it's even worse because you can't even fix the issues, but, I don't think y'all should be contempt either just because you have the option to fix them on Java, Minecraft is a paid game, when you pay for something you should expect something that requires no external modifications to work.

The reason for using C++ isn't that Java can't run on "locked-down" devices. It can easily run on billions of devices, including game consoles and phones. Even performance-wise, Java could run at a reasonable performance on phones and portable consoles. The reason C++ was used is that the development started from scratch and it just made more sense to go for C++ considering it is the industry standard for games and Java is not. But that's it, Bedrock edition could've just as easily have been a Java rewrite if Java was preferred for some reason.

Very well made video. I've touched Bedrock a few times but it just... doesn't feel like Minecraft anymore. The best way I can put it is that Bedrock encourages creating new items/models/mobs/features for server owners and map makers, while Java encourages building on top of what already exists and being more constrained to 'vanilla' mechanics. Not to mention the microtransactions obviously. When I think of Bedrock, I think of the emotes and minecoins and custom models. Their main selling point is the marketplace, NOT the game's classic experience. And that totally goes against what Minecraft is to me.

I think a big part of why bedrock has so many issues is that its code was originally intended for lower end mobile devices and then later ported to other platforms. I think that’s why all of the differences between each editions stem from. Back then mobile devices weren’t nearly as powerful so Mojang probably had to compromise by removing some major features. Also many of Java’s important features these days like the nether roof or some weird redstone quirks were originally bugs that were kept in because Mojang back then probably felt like the community would be happy with them staying. Bedrock instead decided to fix those bugs instead of keeping them. And the reason there hasn’t been a major parity update is because the majority of the community, mainly casual players don’t feel the need for it also it wouldn’t make as much money.

I was playing Bedrock edition with my cousin, I was truly impressed with how well it runs even on low end hardware. As someone who codes bukkit plugins, Java performance is something I have to keep in mind a lot. The biggest boon for Bedrock is the performance. It runs so much better in every way possible, but outside of that it's hard for me to say anything else good about it. Moving around in bedrock feels like you're teleporting pixels and not moving, I believe this is because java has lerp, and I'm guessing Bedrock doesn't. The lighting looks worse, dark spots look way too bright, which washes out the lighter places. While redstone seems better on paper it's rather unpredictable. Java handles redstone with a hash set, which has it's own issues, but the issues are consistent.

I'm genuinely surprised that no one has mentioned the problems with Bedrock redstone here. It's the main reason I don't play it. The lack of bud powering, 1 ticking, and 0 ticking makes a lot of builds either impossible or much much more complicated. And the weird thing were redstone is just... inconsistent. Sometimes a circuit works, sometimes it doesn't. This seems like such a strange thing, and would definitely go against making redstone more intuitive, which seems to be their goal in Bedrock. Great video! I definitely think that Bedrock has great potential and shouldn't have ignored some of the things that make Java edition so great.

A thing I don't like about BE is that it just feels like corporate (tm) the moment I boot it up. I boot it up and boom micro-transactions up in my face. Also Java modding is much better and more versatile compared to Bedrock since Java modding allows you to literally replace any line of code in Minecraft's source code. Also another thing to note is that within the JE shader community, the Bedrock edition raytracing is commonly mocked and laughed at for it's poor technical quality and compared to ray-tracing shaders such as Continuum or SEUS PTGI, it's obvious that shaders made by literal hobbyists have more quality and refinement put into them compared to Bedrock Edition's which was created by a corporation. Keep in mind, Bedrock Edition has access to hardware acceleration and DirectX12, Java Edition only runs on OpenGL, which isn't suited to do this heavy-loaded ray-tracing.
@thebestgamer5248

Java's ray tracing shaders are not fully ray traced is why indoors scenes with it look off compared to bedrock's. On the other hand because java shaders are attempting to make the game look close to real life they usually have volumetric clouds and more realistic water, bedrock's rtx was meant to keep the vanilla feel of Minecraft by keeping the clouds square and water flat. If you actually compare indoor scenes with java and bedrock's rtx you can clearly see bedrock looking more high quility.

Honestly my biggest problem with Bedrock is petty, but I hate how the game doesn't visually feel the same. Obviously you look at bedrock and you can instantly regonize it as minecraft, but there are alot of smaller details that I can only describe as wrong. The most noticeable for me is how the particles are orientated in bedrock, instead of being a 2D billboard copying the orientation of the camera, it is a flat plane facing towards the center of the camera. Other details are with the animations, like the view bobbing on the hand seems slower and heavier. The ui is also different but considering it's designed to run on mobile and console I understand that it had to be reworked. I could do without the transition effects of opening and closing menus though, makes things feel less snappy.

I do like both, the biggest annoyances I have when looking at Bedrock is: 1. Insane hostile mob spawns. First time I entered The Nether in Bedrock on a seed, there was at least one Ghast (maybe 2 but I am sure about one) and like 8 or more skeletons, all from when I just exited the portal. And not even all in one part, no some were more to the left some more to the middle/right. On top of that, I just noticed yesterday that skeletons are a bit bs. They shoot way too fast. You can't not use your shield for a second because it makes you get hit. Also even though I could enter The Nether a bit more relaxed, still it didn't take long for me to come across a few skeletons (not much) but mainly 2 Ghasts which them spawning rapidly. I do like that it's easier to knock back the Ghast fireballs in Bedrock. Also the coords on screen without pressing anything or any mods is a nice thing as well. And some of the world generation is just mindblowing on Bedrock. Maybe Java has some better things like you mentioned, but Bedrock has some insane seeds with unexplainable things which really makes it stand out. Seeds of stuff you won't find anywhere on KZfaq on Java. I know it's considered broken world generation, but the fact it's broken actually makes it kind of amazing. The fact base swords are better than axes I also kind of like. It's strange that in Java a tool that's made for cutting is almost always better than a tool literally for combat. And yes I know enchantments, but a big part you would do - especially when not speedrunning - without enchantments. Hell, a wooden axe is as good as a diamond sword, and way earlier available (yes I know you have durability but even then, and when talking about anything above wood besides gold, it's even stronger than a diamond sword). The only sword that's stronger than an axe is a netherite sword which is only one point higher than wood/gold, and is still weaker than stone/iron/diamond. But maybe that last part is kinda nitpicky. As for the marketplace, I get your point. The check on quality should be done but the only way they could do that is by hiring actual players because best way to judge quality is as a "customer". I have the same with website development. I can make what I think is quality but if the customer thinks it isn't then it isn't. But that would make it so they'd probably have to be paid and I can understand that isn't done. Issue is, without the form, many more people - even 12 year olds who watch a video, steal from other people and mods, put it on the marketplace and thats it, while now they might think they don't get away with it until they find out that it isn't actually checked (for as much as I can say that). In the end, best way to make it better is to have experienced, long time players of the Bedrock edition (or even Java) approve of mods, and only if they're approved by those people (as long as they're unbiased and fair) it can get on the marketplace. Especially with it costing money, doing it without approval is a bad thing cause it'd invite bad people from stealing content and parts of mods to sell it as their own. In the end, I do like both versions, some things I prefer on Bedrock, some on Java. I like playing both. If I play unmodded, Bedrock is fine by me. If I want to play with a bunch of OP or cursed mods, Java it is.

I've played Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Console Legacy Xbox 360 Edition, and as surprising as it sounds, I prefer Console Legacy over Java and Bedrock Editions and this is due to alot of unique features 4J Studios implemented that are not in Bedrock or Java Editions. Limited World Sizes (Which are easier to manage, I get that this was due to limitations, but it offers a unique experience in itself), small biomes (It doesn't take hundreds to thousands of blocks to get through a biome like it does in Current Gen), ability to Reset the Nether and End in the game without a third party tool, double rail speed, Tutorial Worlds, and many other unique things. These would make for a good Quality of Life Update for Java and Bedrock to implement these features as selectable vanilla options. Bedrock Edition has it's ups and downs. Bedrock Edition is kinda like 'Easy Mode' for non-combat oriented players. Most Mobs are easier to deal with (There are rare exceptions like the Wither Boss), Trident Enchantments are better optimized, Tridents have higher drop rates, Redstone is easier to understand to due lack of Quasi Connectivity, Fishing Rods have six times the durability compared to Java Edition, Shorter Zombified Piglin Aggro Radius, expanded ability to have hidden lightsources under slabs stairs and behind shulker boxes, Two Stacks of Fire Protection IV on Armor Pieces gives you inflammability (meaning you cannot be set on fire), Baby Zombies can jump onto a larger variety of mobs, Drowned have increased Spawn rates, and Structure Mashing (The wonderful bug that mashes generated structures together). Bedrock unfortunately is plagued due to not being able to go back to older versions without using a third party tool such as MCLauncher, meaning alot of the recent nerfs applied can't be worked around within the game and have to use Behavior Packs or third party plugins to get around them. There is also the glitch where persistent mobs can just despawn on chunk borders. Turtles have lower spawn rates as well compared to Java Edition. Also it seems with Bedrock Edition players, alot more seem to be focused on Xbox LIVE Achievements instead of the gameplay experience itself. Phantoms when they generate generate in larger numbers on Bedrock and are more aggressive compared to Java Edition. Java Edition as well has it's ups and down. The enhanced the expansive mod support on Java Edition is just incredible (when used properly), The Sweeping Edge enchantment exists (Which is great for Java Combat), some mobs have enhanced AI compared to Bedrock Edition (Skeletons strafing while firing their bow, Zombies being able to spawn Reinforcements as examples as well as Villagers having an expanded AI), you can go back to older versions of Java Edition within the game itself, Quasi Connectivity with Redstone (Which is good if you have an understanding of Java Redstone), faster healing after eating food (This is a big one, you don't have to sit around for two minutes to heal like you do on Bedrock Edition). You can get above the Nether Bedrock Ceiling on Java and build up there (Unlike on Bedrock Edition where you cannot). Since most Java Players focus on the gameplay experience instead of Xbox LIVE Achievements or Advancements, some don't mind using Plugins or cheats to make matters a bit easier (Such as Disabling Phantoms or adding Custom Enchantments). It's downs are generally harder combat, Tridents are harder to get and Trident Enchantments are not as optimized (Save Loyalty which is actually better on Java than Bedrock), Fishing is slower compared to Bedrock Edition, Riptide use will damage the trident if not hitting a mob (Where as on Bedrock Edition Riptide will only damage the Trident if you hit a mob while using Riptide), Structures will not generally mash together, and Java Edition requires a good PC to use for current versions. So I think at the end of the day, it's player preference. I prefer Console Legacy over the other two, but play on Bedrock Edition primarily due to not being Combat Oriented (Save with Tridents) and love fishing as well as wanting current content. This will not stop me however from playing on a Java Server with Geyser.

PS4 player here - I’d appreciate Bedrock more if its UI wasn’t a buggy mess to operate with a controller. With how everything is set up, it’s _calling_ for you to use a mouse. Heck, it looks like something that’d fit perfect with MC:PE’s aesthetic (huge buttons and all). Another thing is performance. Playing Bedrock alone is so-so (provided you aren’t going to beefy biomes and locations), but playing with split-screen? A mess. Walking around is okayish but as various menus are opened, the framerate *_dips._* It’s crazy given this is Minecraft. Those mentioned above weren’t that much of a serious issue however. What I’m absolutely furious about Bedrock’s addition is that all the skins and texture packs I bought _weren’t ported over._ Legacy skins are now re-locked and I have to *_buy them again._* Yes, I’m aware those are just skins, but I’ve bought them _way back_ during the PS3/Vita days. They weren’t cheap either, so for them to be neglected *_just like_* that is disheartening - not to mention the fact that skins can now be bought with tokens or whatever the hell they call it. I really thought Bedrock was optional and will only be played on should we want to play with other people from other platforms… boy how was I wrong.

Java and Bedrock can play together on servers :) Geyser and Waterfall [Two Plugins] allows Bedrock players to join Java Servers through some complex packet conversion tools, sure the Bedrock addition will be marginally slower due to this conversion, but it is still very much playable and you don't need that high specs to run the server off of (a 10 year old PC will have more then enough power). It does get a bit more dicey with allowing Console Additions of Bedrock to join but I believe it is still possible! But mobile, nintendo switch and Windows 10 can definitely play together. Obviously it goes without saying that you won't have emotes on the server or anything like that but if you simply want to play together and build, you can just use Geyser and Waterfall which would allow them to connect.

One of my biggest gripes with Bedrock Edition is how you can’t change certain game rules without turning on cheats while making a new world. I personally prefer to play with KeepInventory on, because I just don’t think it’s fun dropping everything you have when you die and potentially losing hours of progress. In Java, I can easily enable this in the world creation menu and leave it at that while still having cheats turned off. I don’t want to enable cheats, I just want to keep my inventory and that’s it. However, if I want to enable this on Bedrock, I HAVE to have cheats enabled and there’s no way to change it once the world is created (and I am unable to earn achievements as a result). It’s not only incredibly frustrating, but it also makes the game less fun for me, and more stressful.

Hi, I have a little experience with making MC marketplace content. Agreed 100% there is a lot of stuff on there that is trash and the marketplace is very oversaturated these days in my opinion. Something I wanted to mention was worlds that have addons. While yes you can't extract the addon from the world in the game, you can do it manually. If you create a world from a template, that world will be located locally on your machine and you can move the addon and resource pack to another world. Or you can turn them into a zip and rename to .mcpack or something to make it easily importable to other worlds. It's not hard to do, but it's also not something everyone knows you can do. Also if you move a behaviour addon, then also move the resource pack addon. This is because the behaviour pack often has dependencies (models, animations, textures, etc...) in the resource pack that it needs to work.

Light passes through them in Bedrock and it causes horrific lighting issues. I definitely think Bedrock could be so so much better and replace Java. And honestly? I'd be fine with that as long as they really put in the work for casual players but also more technical players like modders, etc.

The fact that in bedrock you cant just hover over an item and hit a number key to put it on that number in your hotbar. Also java has so many free mods and modpacks. Imagine if modpacks were a thing on bedrock, you would have to spen like 100 bucks to get an average size pack.

The only reason bedrock was still okay for me was because of how easy it is to invite your friends to play but now on java the essential mod exists which you can do the exact same thing. The marketplace has some of the worst content ever. If someone is reading this and wants actually good maps for bedrock, check out zedafox’s maps because they’re free and really good.

I think the reason bedrock feels so off is all the little things. Particles and entities are rendered a bit too bright, texture pop-in is a bit TOO noticable, with grass disappearing at about 4 or 5 chunks away on fancy graphics and 12 render distance. I think the grass pop-in would be slightly better if it used a low-poly model when viewed from a distance, like sugarcane. Basically imagine a destructive performance mod with an equal amount of missing features to QoL/performance improvements

My major complaint with bedrock edition is that there is tons of bugs and it feels like they are adding new bugs in every bug fix update. It also seems like bugs that have already been fixed return after a few updates.

I used to play on bedrock for a long time. I started with ps4, went to iPad, and then went to Java. And I have to say, they all feel like different games. The console edition felt slightly clunky, as the mouse was replaced with the joystick. Bedrock felt more like “regular Minecraft.” What I mean by that is that single player and (non-server) multiplayer dominated it. Thus, people would spend more time on their own worlds, instead of servers. Java edition was far more different however. It was smooth, fast, and it was a huge upgrade. However, the two biggest upgrades were the mods and servers. I played Twilight Forest, Galacticraft, and a few others, and they transformed Minecraft into a new game. Mods are available on iPad, but they aren’t very good. The servers are the best part of Java, though. Hypixel is truly just amazing, with tons of different competitive, casual, and slow games (like Skyblock). I think that Hypixel is absolutely what pushes Java over the top alone. The Minecraft marketplace and character customization is pretty great though.

All mojang had to do was give 4j studios the rains to helping on the devlopment of this game but they didn't which is sad cause the console editions of the game were so iconic not just because it was the games full debute on all systems but the fact each version was tailor made for the system it is used on is the cherry on top the bedrock edition while has cross play is everything minecraft wasn't before it was bought out by Microsoft

As a bedrock player, (has java edition but doesn't play it because it has no controller support for no reason) it is literally unplayable how broken bedrock edition is, i literally can never get a clean experience in bedrock edition that i just stopped playing Minecraft

It's way more broken than people think it is, the game removes all your items when entering the end portal, shields cover up your entire screen, and the game doesn't even save half of the time

my big issue with bedrock is the fucked up dual wielding. i almost never use shields, i just never found them useful, but i would always have my torches in my offhand while exploring. i cant do that in bedrock and it just makes exploring a cave unfun
