When Todd McFarlane left Marvel Comics to form Image Comics his first title was Spawn and it was huge.
Naturally that drew the attention of toy companies, tv and movie studios and everyone else. But Todd had a very particular style he wanted if he was going to do a Spawn cartoon and along came HBO at just the right time with the right answers to his questions.
Premiering in 1997 and lasting for 3 seasons this is the story of Todd McFarlane's Spawn: The Animated Series

Keith David is one of the very few rare actors that understand how to act for both the camera and how to act with your voice. His numerous video game and cartoon voice roles are some of the best English voice work ever done. You remember his voice almost instantly because he knows how to use it like an instrument. It's like listening to a guitarist shred but it's an amazing vocal performance.

“Returns forever to a hell of Todd’s own making”. Damn, what a clever and ironic metaphor to describe Todd’s history with spawn. Around 2006 or 2007, well after Spawn was established, McFarlane toys decided to release a comic and toy line based on the premise of: "What if Spawn was a more kid-friendly, Saturday Morning-style toyetic cartoon franchise", which was a total 180-degree turn of Spawn's original approach. It featured simpler, sharp, stylized designs reminiscent of Batman:TAS, and it was called "Spawn X".

As a teenager in the latter part of the 90s, Spawn hit me exactly on point. In fact, my grandma bought me a box of comic books from QVC which had Spawn on the box and included the first issue. I watched the whole HBO series as it aired, and I have the 10th anniversary Steelbook DVD set which reinstated the McFarlane host segments that were absent from the original home video releases. And yeah, I saw the film in theatres. Very unfortunate that the series ended when it did, and we haven’t gotten a revival that Todd has hinted at on and off for years.

You gotta love the 90's era move to indie comics superhero cartoons. Obviously, TMNT started it, but then we got things like The Tick, and it really helped push the popularity of these little comics that had a cult following to being major players in the comics game. I never actually got to see Spawn, being on HBO as it was, and I was more interested in the weirdness of The Maxx. As for McFarlane, I did get some of their toys, but hated when they went from action figures to fragile little dioramas that you could just display on a shelf until someone knocked it over. Hell, they made the first Shrek toys.

Great job! I didn’t have HBO when I was younger so I waited for the videos of the animated series to come out. I had to wait even longer for the first season due to the mail strike that was going on but the wait was definitely worth it. I’m glad it’s on Max now but it’s very sad the show was cut down so early in its run. It was reportedly supposed to get more seasons, but HBO changed their mind and canceled the show. Keep up the great work folks and thank you again! Hoping we see videos based on Smallville and Jackie Chan Adventures in the future, as well as maybe a video or series of videos about the rise and fall of Kids’ WB! You folks are all awesome and ty again! Btw, Keith David rules and he owned the role of Spawn! Also, I never saw the intros by Todd McFarlane. They weren’t included on the videos. Spawn was my favourite fictional character for a very long time, and it's still the only comic book I bother collecting. It's been a long time since I've seen the cartoon, but I vaguely recall being disappointed with it. I wasn't crazy about the art style, and the voices weren't how I imagined them. But that was close to 30 years ago; I should really give it another watch.

Batman: TAS is one of my all-time favourite cartoons, but so is Spawn: TAS for different reasons. Where Batman took the high road of a hamlet-esque tragic hero, Spawn is the inverse mirror image of absolute darkness, depravity, depression, self-loathing and violence. Normies who are typically unacquainted with and uninquisitive about the Jungian Shadow could never hope to understand the unique genius of its sharp aesthetics and bleak motifs. It pushed the boundaries in all the right ways and refused to compromise its hard edge, yet had an unmistakeable thread of humanity and fragile hope amidst all the chaos and bloodshed. My favourite character besides Spawn himself was Jason Wynn, who is exactly the kind of megalomaniacal power-broker you'd expect to be running the world from the shadows. It was such a shame we never got to see the fleshed out version of his introduction to Violator, as well as Spawn's battle against Heaven. True art usually dies an early death simply because it's not monetisable and its creator rightly wants creative control over their IP, but the suits who back these projects are invariably control freaks just like Jason Wynn and would rather cut it loose than let the author decide how its done.

Easily one of the greatest adaptations ever along with SF2 the animated movie and the Arkham games. I used to read the comic books and when I first watched this series it was just perfect. Everything as I had imagined, the mood, the atmosphere...Keith David's towering performance as Spawn. He is Spawn, the way Kevin Conroy is Batman. Some of my most memorable scenes are his first encounter with Violator....the voice Violator uses during that telepathy conversation is amazing, it sound really evil! Another is the scene where confronts Tony Twist after he pays a visit to Overtkill....."Let that little mystery keep you up at night!", Legendary and finally his encounter with Chapel.....Amazing!!! Seen it so many times I've lost count! Amazing cartoon!

Slightly offtopic: That's a FANTASTIC jacket, Dan! I loved Spawn (the comic) back then, but when I revisited the comics a couple of months ago I found they haven't aged well... While the art style is still great, some of the dialogue and stories don't quite hold up. HOWEVER, there are still some sparkles of brilliance there, and some of the characters that McFarlane (and Neil Gaiman!) introduced are still amazing. In my humble opinion, the animated series has aged surprisingly well and is totally worth a re-visit.

I still have my VHS copy with the lenticular cover, though even when I was in high school I thought the animation was lackluster (I was already in anime at the time) and was of the opinion that the show got by largely on the notoriety of its content, which was very taboo for a cartoon in America at the time. Looks like it's time for me to dust off one of my many Spawn shirts I got from my local comic shop, slap on a pair of Jncos, flip through an issue of Wizard, pop in that VHS, and travel down memory lane.

Loved Spawn, read the comics, watched the series, and enjoyed the movie. Wish he had a last hurrah unchanged for this generation.

I watched it when it was on HBO while I was too young 😅 I own both the movie and series on DVD, and have watched the series on MAX about 5 times in the last year. 😂❤️‍🔥 I may enjoy Spawn a bit.

I vividly remember making my mom rent this VHS for me and the cashier warning her that it wasn't for kids... Of course I had already seen it, and eventually had my own copy.

Berserk, Bleach, Spawn and full metal alchemist are my ALL time favorite anime’s ever. I absolutely love and fanboy over all of them. Could we get a Berserk video if that hasn’t already been done?

I remember watching it as it aired for the second and third seasons. Secretly recording the episodes at night to watch during the day while my mom was at work (I was 12) lol.

Love this show since 15 when it aired! One of my favorites as it’s Heavy Metal meets Batman TAS and the crow and csi We need more adult animation shows that aren’t just limited to comedies but other genres like The maxx, aeon flux, primal, undone, this, invincible or anything from Japan

The animation was Amazing! Nothing else like it on tv at that time, it had to be on HBO. No network channels could air it. Keith David is an amazing versatile talented actor on camera and on voiceover.

I still think the best adult animated series, best comic adaptation & most impressive animation for television in the 90s was all the same series. The Maxx.
