On 30 April 1975, the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to advancing troops of the North Vietnamese regular army, marking an end to the conflict that, for more than 20 years, had split Vietnam in two. To the United States of America, the fall of Saigon represented the ignominious defeat of its decades-long military intervention in the region. In the final days before the fall, as American civilians, diplomatic staff, press, and military personnel sought to evacuate the city before NVA tanks arrived, ITN cameraman Peter Wilkinson and reporter Michael Nicholson made their way to the US embassy compound in the hope of boarding a flight out of the city. Upon arriving at the embassy, Wilkinson filmed as local civilians looted the abandoned embassy building. Thousands of South Vietnamese crowded at the gates in the hope of being evacuated with Western civilians. State employees, citizens who had assisted the war effort, and those who simply feared what the NVA would bring begged for a route to safety for themselves and their loved ones. This footage filmed by Wilkinson captures in incredible detail the human tragedy of Saigon's fall, and has been stunningly restored in high definition to be presented here.
