This was shot before 2019. Things have changed in Kashmir since abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir in 2019. They now have malls and theatres among other stuff. I recently went there amd Sri Nagar is a hustling bustling city just like any other city. We just had a G20 meeting in Srinagar, Kashmir.

The Kashmir shown in this episode is the Indian side of it. In 1947 when India was partitioned & Pakistan was created, J&K's ruler initially wanted to declare his territory an independent country, a right given by the Brits to all princely states that were not directly under the British colonial govt (they were more like protectorates). Pakistan came to know about this & was quick to take action by sending in Armed Pashtun Tribesmen in lieu of their official army to avoid an international reaction of invading a foreign territory. The ruler of J&K realizing he can't defend his territory eventually signed the instrument of accession of India. So under the terms of partition, J&K legally became India's territory. Once this was done, the Indian Army was quick to take action & halted Pakistan's expansion & also pushed them back a little, but not before they had already occupied what we call Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, which are a few districts in the Western part of the erstwhile princely state, and also a big mountainous region called Gilgit Baltistan. When Indian army got involved, Pakistan officially sent in their troops which led to first Indo-Pak War of 1947. India was in a commanding position & could have very likely have taken back all of occupied territory if it weren't for stupidity of our first Prime Minister. He went to the UN putting a lot of faith in that toothless organization & the ceasefire was eventually declared. Since then, the issue remains unresolved with Pakistan holding on to territory they occupied (about 1/3rd of erstwhile princely state), and India retaining what's ours legally. There is no internationally recognized border in the region, but there is an unofficial de facto border which hasn't changed much since 1947 (except when India took book Siachen), and it's called the Line of Control (LoC). This is the entire issue of Kashmir in a nutshell.
