In this video essay, I delve into the heart of the Assassin's Creed franchise and its growing fanbase problem. From the iconic days of Altair and Ezio, where social stealth and the hidden blade defined the Assassin's Creed experience, to the recent RPG-heavy titles like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, there's a clear divide among fans.
I discuss how Ubisoft's shift towards RPG mechanics has alienated purists who cherish the original tenets of the series. Yet, with the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows, there's a glimmer of hope. By showcasing a dual protagonist system that caters to both old-school stealth enthusiasts and modern RPG players, Ubisoft might finally bridge the gap.
Join me as I explore whether AC Shadows could be the solution we've been waiting for, balancing the needs of a split fanbase and potentially rejuvenating a beloved franchise.

Honestly, due to my username, I've played and beaten every Assassin's creed game. I've loved every one of them. And on the Ac Shadow's backlash. In Origin's all those years ago, a blackman voiced Bayek. He had problems at first, but everyone liked the game. Also, Odyssey and Valhalla had a female main protagonist. They could romance women or men. So technically, they were Bi. But they sold billions, and no one cared. And once Ac Shadows trailer comes out with a blackman and a Japanese, " Oh no, it's the end of the world." And they can like male or females just like in Odyssey and Valhalla. It's Woke, Dei. Blah blah Even though months before hand they new a black samurai. Yusuke was going to be a protagonist. Not the main, that's Naoe, but they act like she doesn't count. Now they're doing a puttition, because Yusuke is in the game.

I'm going to pause and say that Origins, imho, is the only Assassin's Creed game that can be called Assassin's Creed AND get away with being more combat/action heavy while being less stealth focused. This is because the entire premise of the game is that it's the birth of the Hidden Ones. The Creed wasn't formed yet, and Bayek was a trained Medjay not an Assassin. He had to adapt and form those tenets and core traits in his recruits as well as himself. Valhalla and Odyssey are great games that exist in the same universe as Assassin's Creed. It's even fair to say that their DNA is a part of whatever Animus because they were distantly related to the Assassins. That said, they are not Assassins and therefore the games are not Assassin's Creed. Call them something like Assassin's Creed Universe: Valhalla/Odyssey. This would set the expectation that you'll get some of the lore and some of the same characters but you aren't an Assassin.

@Chamillitary44 "The last Medjay Bayek and his wife Aya of Alexandria founded the order---then known as the Hidden Ones---at the tumultuous twilight of Ptolemaic rule to defend the common people against the Order of the Ancients." Look, you can lie to yourself all you want but this information is readily available online. Even if you don't want to take the time to go back to the games to find it, it has been documented by other gamers. The Hidden Ones were founded by Bayek. All i want in Assassin's Creed Shadow is that for the love of the series, please have another or some Assassins Member that we can talk to, or we look up as a mentor or someone who introduce us to the Brotherhood. Maybe some story about Altair who saves The Levantine Brotherhood or Ezio who liberates Rome then becoming the Mentor of The Italian Brotherhood. In this game, i want the two protagonist (mostly Naoe) to have strong reason on joining the Brotherhood, their initiation, and what was their part they played in this era. So to summarize, what i liked about the Assassin's Creed Series is the "Assassins" and their story and i would like if Shadows can deliver it beautifully.

The only way these RPGs can have social stealth is to have armors/outfits have other functions other than stats. Like you should be able to change into clothes that blends in with the crowd which makes it harder for enemies to detect you. A disguise with nothing but your hidden blade. Use the horse mechanic from RDR2 where you can leave your stuff there, change into your disguise or back to your armor, and there you go, a social stealth for RPGs that makes sense. Or if you don't want the horse mechanic, use the hay bales as stash places to hide your stuff.

My KZfaq feed has been flooded with Assassin’s Creed content ever since I finished AC2 last week as my first Assassin’s Creed game (We don’t talk about Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia, that doesn’t count). Not that I’m complaining, this is good stuff. Subscribed. Anyway, I’ve never touched an Assassin’s Creed RPG entry, and I plan to buy Shadows whenever I can after finishing the other two games in the Ezio collection (and AC3 for the American Revolution and to finish Desmond’s story). I hope it eases me in to the RPG playstyle while keeping the traditional AC gameplay for familiarity. After spending the last few years playing games like Genshin Impact, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Persona, and Smash Bros, I find Assassin’s Creed’s historical settings really intriguing, as it’s unfamiliar to the games I’ve played, but familiar to history I’ve learned. I’ve heard that AC games aren’t always the most historically accurate, but I want to be immersed into the time as someone who shouldn’t be there, but affects the course of history nonetheless. Namely, an assassin. I hope Shadows does a good job with introducing me to the RPG side of AC, because Ancient Rome and Egypt always woke me up in my history classes, and I’d love to play AC Origins and Odyssey without the genre whiplash and feeling like I’m not playing Assassin’s Creed.

I strongly disagree with you. I believe Ubisoft made a mistake by not creating a new IP starting with Origins. They chose the safe path of capitalising on the franchises' name instead of doing the more risky but more sound choice of starting anew. Black Flag was already a hint of that direction with Ashraf Ismail, the lead game designer, being very openly uninterested in the Assassins fantasy as shown later on with Origins and Valhalla. The dual protagonist will not work. It divides the efforts of the developing team and creates a situation where you force players into one or the other gameplay style at some point of the game. Also, the community has made pretty clear that they favor Naoe and her gameplay. Yasuke, coming after Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro, doesn't live up to the current standard for samurai gameplay from what we've seen. There is no foreseable win to me. Ubisoft must be courageous and either drop AC entirely and focus on Historic RPGs or rebranch into what the serie is and stop fooling around.
@TRENCH-COAT
@TRENCH-COAT 10 күн бұрын
Completely get where you are coming from and I do mostly agree with you. This video is definitely my more positive/hopeful outlook on the situation. Obviously if I had a choice in the decision making I would have stuck with the Old AC formula and have games like Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla be their own thing - not associated to the AC franchise in anyway. Only time will tell if shadows dual protagonists work or not but I don't think we can definitively say it will or won't. Thanks for leaving your comment cause I do think it's a completely valid way of thinking about the situation. One thing we can all agree on is that Ubisoft screwed up with Origins by tieing it to the AC franchise.
@chillyman7340
@chillyman7340 8 күн бұрын
Most people seem to agree that AC Origins was the new standard of Assassins Creed going the RPC direction and most people seem to love AC Origins since Odyssey and Valhalla weren't that good, then they decided to to try go back to their roots with Mirage which by itself added very little value to the franchise but it wasn't too badly received. The issue isn't AC going RPG, it's just that they are not making good RPG AC games. The old style worked but that was because they had the creator of Assassins Creed working the on the games but now pretty much all the OG people from the OG Assassins Creed games are gone and now the franchise sits in limbo stuck behind the shadow of Ezio's legacy, great video man :)

I wish wish they would make parkour and assassinations more technically challenging. Instead of just holding down or pushing one button. They should learn from other stealth and parkour games and bring an improved assassins game that actually requires skill. But I guess they’re afraid people will find it a little challenging and give up. 🤷🏼‍♂️
@TRENCH-COAT
@TRENCH-COAT 10 күн бұрын
That would be so great if they could make parkour more of a technically challenging experience. I remember when Unity came out and they improved on the parkour by giving you a up and down parkour button - I hoped they could keep building on that system instead we got the RPG creed that hardly include parkour. It's so sad!
@WideOldDan
@WideOldDan 8 күн бұрын
In the classic games parkour is easy to do but there are levels above holding all the buttons and pushing a stick that are more effective and more fun. The Kenway games 'streamlined' parkour, leaving out a few things, but adding a parkour down. That parkour down was basically a drop from any height button, which I liked. Unity made parkour down the same as parkour up and made it all safe unless we demand suicide. RPGs took away any complexity we had
@moonchild-299
@moonchild-299 6 күн бұрын
I hate the new combat and parkour system. And the worlds get bigger and emptier which is just sad. The older games were superior in many ways. Unity was the peak of the older Assassin creed games. I had the most fun playing that one. I feel like Ubisoft was just afraid to name their new RPG format (since Origins) not an Assassin creed game because they already had a huge fandom and didn’t want it to flop. I mean the newer games aren’t for me, but they would have sold well even with a new name. I wished they had done that a new franchise for a another audience. And I don’t think shadows will convince me it looks just like the newer games…

@@WideOldDan my point is people been complaining about everything about this franchise since day one. Here are some that I remember. People were upset about Altair not being the protagonist of 2 before the reveal trailer. People were not happy with 3 and the lack of cities to parkour in and I specifically remember people hating Conor. That changed as time went on. I remember people complaining that 4 would have pirates and constantly said Edward wasn't a real assassin. That changed over time. People were upset rogue was made for previous gen consoles when unity came out. People also use to hate the unity parkour and Piss Pot himself. That also changed over time. People also use to say syndicate was a return to form and that Jakob was funny and reminded them of ezio. That also all changed as time went on. The AC fanbase is overly reactionary and quick to judge. Can almost guarantee the RPG AC games will be seen as fun and good games, and that Odyssey and Valhalla will be seen as good spin offs to the franchise. They'll eventually become beloved by fans. Also I remember people loving brotherhood but as time went on it became clear(it is still an amazing game) people realized it was essentially a DLC for 2. It's like how "fans" (they aren't fans they're tourists of this franchise) are saying every AC had you play as someone from the country the game is set in. Not true. Revelations you're an Italian in Constantinople. In 3 you're half native American and half European. In 4 you're Welch in the Caribbean. In liberations your Creole or Haitian and the game is in America. In Odyssey you're Spartan and most the game is in Athens. In Valhalla you're Norse and spend like 95% of the game in Europe, France and Ireland. Only in Norway for like 30 minutes. Or how the franchise is closer to being historically accurate....also wrong. In 1 DR Vidic tells Desmond how the Animus isn't glitching and why events play out differently than what he is taught and why certain figures are alive when textbooks state they died. He explains how history was written by templar's to guide humanity. In 2 you literally fist fight the pope. In 3 Connor is literally capable of killing a full grown bear with his hands and in the DLC uses ISU artifacts to fight king Washington...... In syndicate Karl Marx is in England during a time when he wasnt even there. In the ezio games leonardo is way WAY younger than what he was in real life. Machevelli is also an assassin when his real life politics and ethics perfectly align with the templar's. In syndicate DLC, Jack the ripper is a rogue assassin. The list goes on. Most people's complaints against the games typically are over blown and based on nothing. Like I said most these people aren't fans. They're just tourists who maybe played one game if that and think all the games are or should be like that one they played. People been saying AC is dead since 3. Been saying no one buys these games anymore since then. So as a life long fan, most the complaints are meaningless and will change given time. Just like they always do

Shadows could have been that and if it were made by anyone else it would be. But it's like Ubisoft Quebec can't help but piss people off with their decisions and lack of forethought. The many issues with their "historical" depiction of Japan and Japanese culture as well as certain decisions revolving around Yasuke show a lack of understanding for the audience, the people of the setting and even what drew many people to franchise (Old school and RPG alike) in the first place.

Gotta be honest here since im replaying some titles rn, the stealth in the older games isnt that great. While I love sneaking my way through everyone in AC4 or try to blend as much in as I can in AC1, the mechanics werent really that strong. The fantasy keeps me engaged though, not even close to being boring. Ever since probably AC2 I think, the combat was easy and flashy and just looked amazing and kinda became its own focus. There are so many missions in the older games where stealth is nowhere needed at all, so I cant really say its been THE focus of the series. Its the way I want to play it personally, but its not as defining as I once thought it was. Also, apparently Odyssey is fun to play stealthy according to some videos Ive seen. Cant vouch for that myself as I havent played it Oh yeah, favorite game might be Black Flag or Brotherhood, even though the existence of Brotherhood doomed Desmonds story and made AC2s ending weaker
@TRENCH-COAT
@TRENCH-COAT 11 күн бұрын
I completely agree with you. Stealth in AC has never been genre defining. I think AC unity might be the game in the series that best nails stealth, adding a crouch button as well as bustling crowds that you can easily blend into and disappear. It's more about the idea of being an assassin and the game allowing me to get immersed into those situations. I also just gravitate more to a stealthy approach than a loud approach. I honestly wish Ubisoft could've built on the foundation set by Unity rather than what we have today.

My first AAA single player game was Valhalla and I do love that game to the point where I 100% it in a round 1 and a half year. It is not like I only played that game at the time. I also tried out the other AC games, starting with Odyssey and going downwards from that game to Unity (might sound weird, but I wanted the most up to date games first and being still young, where not in the community yet). After playing through those I decided to buy the rest, and play all of them in chronological order. Right now my favourite games of the series are Valhalla, Unity, Syndicate and 4 Black flag (not placed in any particular order).

If you play Shadows, you should not trust any historical description this time. Cherry blossoms in spring and persimmons in autumn are shown at the same time. And Yasuke, looking at the scene of rice planting, says, "Bumper crop." もしも貴方がシャドウズをプレーするならば、今回の歴史的描写は一切信用しないほうが良いでしょう。春の桜と秋の柿が同時にうつります。そして弥助は田植えの光景をみながら「豊作」と言いました。

I think creative license is applicable and reasonable to the creation of the game's world. Ghost of Tsushima for example is over-stylised for effect. So I think cherry blossoms in spring (if it makes the world better) is worth it.

I'm an old school player, I lost my AC virginity with AC2 and have played every single game ever since which apparently makes me worthy of voicing an opinion, that being this tribalism misses the point of what the series is doing entirely and it's ultimately going to make things worse. Shadow doesn't star two different characters because Ubi wants to appease both sides, it stars two heroes because that's what the game itself is about, the story of two different people working together against a common enemy which is something AC hasn't done yet. Valhalla doesn't star a viking with little interest in stealth because they want to screw old time fans (seriously...) but rather because it was something the series hadn't done yet, Kassandra is a warrior wielding a POE because that hadn't been done before. I'm sure the next game (something about witches I think, sounds awesome) will have some twist on the formula too and you people will complain about it because Ubisoft Is aware that there isn't appealing both sides so they don't bother. What Ubisoft is doing is making games that are as varied as possible in settings, tone, heroes and stories and slowly but surely building the single most versatile and eclectic gaming franchise ever, something that couldn't have been possible had they listened to people whining about wanting "AC Unity but in a different setting", they know better than to listen to these hyper conservative fans when Black Flag was the last hit until Origins came out, two games that couldn't possibly be more different while also obviously being part of the same coherent (more or less) narrative and every game has been a hit on all sides since (except general critical cpnsense but that's been the norm since Brotherhood). They aren't gonna have two different characters with different playstyles after Shadows, not for a while anyway, mark my words. They'll have some other variation on the formula, people will love it and you'll probably hate it because, sorry to say, the fundamental elements of Assassin's Creed aren't "social stealth, parkour and hidden blade" anymore then GoW's are "Blade of Chaos, Gods and Kratos's exposed nipples" despite these elements being in every single game. The fundamental elements are, and have been since at least AC3 "historical settings, open world and versatility of movement" because that's what people play these games for. Nobody plays the next Assassin's Creed game to check out the new hidden blade model.
@TRENCH-COAT
@TRENCH-COAT 7 күн бұрын
Definitely an interesting and valid take! Appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinion. I think you don’t get to where you are as a franchise without making creative choices to continually elevate and refresh the formula - which inadvertently does anger a small subset of fans. I think most outcry has been due to the games having the AC name but then only 10% of the game being about the assassin’s and the creed. Which I firmly believe is not too much to ask. You can have a viking game but have the protagonist also be an assassin or the core narrative be more centred around the assassin’s. I think you can reinvigorate a franchise without stripping it of its identity. You don’t go into a tony hawk game expecting to never use a skateboard and I don’t go into an assassin’s creed game expecting to not use a hidden blade.

@@Highonlife24 The premise is bad. Yasuke burns her village and kills her people, but she somehow talks him into joining her to fight injustice, leaving the former things unaddressed. Wasn't explained very well and they have very little cause to work side by side. Ubisoft got many other things wrong with the depiction of the seasons, the villages, cultural behavior, what Samurai would and would not do in a duel, etc. It's pretty well documented by Japanese tubers. The last major thing being that Japanese are saying Yasuke was not Samurai, despite Ubisoft's assertions he was. I think in general it is the way this game has been presented. The idea wasn't bad but the execution of the whole production was.
