The Fantastical Worlds of Kim Simonsson.
Sculptor Kim Simonsson of Fiskars, Finland, crafts innocent, yet beguiling life-sized figures of child and animals in “moss-covered” ceramics, often found in natural settings that lead the viewer into an imaginative, fairytale-like world inspired by the forests of Finland.
Selected as one of Artnet’s “Nine Fascinating Objects” at 2016 Design Miami, the “Moss People” sculptures are the result of a unique technique combining stoneware, paint and green nylon fiber, which gives the figures their smooth and mossy surface. Every sculpture is handmade and created in the artist’s studio in Fiskars Village.

I was quite taken with these sculptures and went looking for the book that was put out a few years ago, unfortunately I had no luck finding a place to purchase it. Amazing and haunting work.

When I seen the most covered figures it reminded me of tree people in books written by Emily Rhoda the 3 doors trilogy, straight away they took me to that magical world, I would give anything to see her creations mixed with yours, I say, 3 years late 🤷‍♀️🙇‍♀️🍀👍.

this is beautiful work. I am very concerned about the method of applying the fibre. Even though Kim wears protective gear during the application, surely this should be done in a dedicated room so the fibres won't be lose all over the room afterwards to inhale. I hope he considers this as it could be extremely toxic to ingest into the body.

really wonderful the Moss people. And that future loneliness, I think, is contained in that terrible nylon toxic fiber. ( 'A beautiful reflection of the natural world' with a highly toxic material... what a contradiction)

I believe it can. If you were to "under fire" this clay (and possibly leave some larger pores) - I believe you could "seed" the sculpture with moss. The under fired clay being used to hold extra water for the moss to feed from and grip to. Think "chia pet." I've toyed with this before on planters with a little success... I should revisit that idea...

@@michaelstem2166 Yes, that sounds like an interesting idea. And have you seen the moss art they make on walls, etc, with the use of a mixture of moss and a growth culture that they paint onto the walls? It would need more delicate handling and upkeep of course.

Nice to see that these are made by artist, at day job. When other option is to frame idea and make couple of drawings, mini sculpture perhaps give to work group who make 10 per month, asking same price. Or worst kind of idea Chinese make 1000 moss orphans 3D printing machine / per 2 months, sold whit trademark. My point is no more trash, is good if these are art pieces not products, more valuable and more rare, more desirable. Cant say about nylon fiber is it environment friendly, depends how artifact and materials for it is kept and do we give artist secular right to use polluting materials. Logic is usual, norm, when you use these kind of materials what pollute, result is that what you are describing here, orphans wondering alone polluted world trying survive in future.

Yes. Rembrandt should have used real flesh instead of that dreadful, dangerous flake white paint stuff. OK a bit rough! But the whole point about these works (to me) is their synthetic nature. Putting moss on them might reduce them to a piece of garden centre gnomeland whimsy. As it is they are 'otherworldly' due in no small part to the artist's command of technique & knowledge plus application of synthetic materials.

...no pretense in his demeanor: a decent, honest artist, very good at his craft... Unfortunately, the bombastic, purely journalistic title writes off these qualities (rare in our times, although they may sound modest). The usual adjectives like "amazing", "awesome", cheap interjections ("wow", etc.) put Mr.Simonson in the same league with scores of would-be artists flocking the Internet, hash-tag experts fishing for praise. ...He deserves much better, as the clip is proving...

Wow, just know interpretations from different ppl can be extremely different. You should listen again how he explains the storylike meaning he hasfor them. But ultimately it is up to the observer what each piece depicts and symbolizes. I alaothink he likes the medium.
