I really do think now that anyone that mentions "range anxiety" are just anxious people; it says everything about the person saying to and nothing about the infrastructure, even though the infrastructure could be better still. Even with what we have, charging stations ensure you get good ergonomic and personal-need breaks on a long road trip. As an example: it's been possible for years to do a Cannonball Run (NYC to LA) using different routes (one way mainly on I-80 via Iowa and Colorado, the other on Interstates that follow the old Route 66 via New Mexico and Missouri) AND limit yourself to one charging network with no worries. If an EV driver only used Electrify America, the furthest hop on the northern route between two charging locations is 139 miles (Bloomsburg, PA to DuBois, PA) and 128 miles on the southern route (Winslow, AZ to Gallup, NM). Even if they wanted to do the 160+ mile loop to see the Grand Canyon between Williams and Flagstaff, AZ, there are four 350kW chargers at the Visitor Center on the way. The only way for anyone to run out of power on the longest of journeys for most places now is to not pay attention or not do the minimum of planning!

@@G82Watts Not at all. Charging is the only thing they appear to really excel at The Model S Plaid (top trim Model S) costs 90K which less than a base rwd Taycan with the small battery (~100k). Comparable Taycan is 2x the price. Until Porsche is able to provide such technology for 75K it doesn't count because very few people are able to obtain such cars. IMO Hyundai/KIA/Genesis are doing the best because they offer a lot of the Porsche tech and engineering for a fraction of the Porsche cost.

@@ani_b there are few reasons why these major updates are not happening. Porsche is definitely pushing fast charging technology ahead as it should. I hope this better charging capability continues to improve while it simultaneously trickles down and becomes available for all BEVs. Also noteworthy is appreciating the actual amount of energy actually transfed and the rate at which it is being done. Pushing almost 400 amps at 800 volt is nothing short of remarkable for reusable connector and a cable and connector small enough and flexible enough that it can be handled (perhaps two hands as you noted) by regular person. We are definitely closing in on recharge times that rival gasoline fill-ups.

@otm646
@otm646 Ай бұрын
No, focusing on initial range is the most important. Most people are going to be charging at home, very rarely are you driving more than 250-300 miles in a day. This type of testing is the back to back cross continent 500-1000 mile days someone might do once or twice a year. It also comes down to age. Talk to your parents, or anyone over 45 and you'll see they almost never do any of this type of driving anymore.
@davesvoboda2785
@davesvoboda2785 Ай бұрын
@@otm646 Of course, you buy the car that has the range appropriate for your day-to-day use. But for most people, that would be our used Nissan Leaf with 80 miles of range, which we charge once a week to keep the 12V battery healthy, but don't really need to, for the traction battery. But the clamoring for greater range beyond the 250-300 currently available, that's not about day-to-day driving, but about travelling, and for that, a fat charge curve and high power DC fast chargers make all the difference, not battery range. If you have a big assed battery that will go 400 miles between charges, but takes an hour to fast charge, that's more negatively impactful to a trip than a 250 mile car that goes 20% -70% in ten minutes.
@obieWanmotivation
@obieWanmotivation 11 күн бұрын
@@davesvoboda2785 I feel that you're both right however, I suspect that most people (who charge their EV at home like myself), they will prefer range over charging speed. I feel like My i4 M50 would be perfect with around 100 more miles of range for my needs. I can complete a round trip without having to stop but to be sure, I charge publicly around half the time so I can drive without conserving my range. The current range in decent weather (50F to 90F) is 250 to 270 miles (my average is 3.2 mi/kwh over 15K miles). I rarely drive far enough where the fast charging will be more beneficial and I don't see myself siting in the car for more than 400 miles max.

Depends. Low-efficiency means you're less impacted by wind and weather, but you're more impacted by the charging speeds of the stations along your route. Traveling a corridor with only 150 kW chargers impacts your charge time much more if your vehicle gets 2 mi/kWh than if it gets 4 mi/kWh. Low-efficiency also makes driving very expensive, especially when paying public charging rates. And, even when home charging, a less efficient vehicle needs you need more amps to be able to finish charging overnight, which, in turn, means a more expensive charger and a greater likelihood of needing upgrades to your electrical panel. Granted, nobody that buys a Porsche cares the slightest about the cost of electricity, but it's still worth saying.

Less aerodynamic EV’s with great charging as well as more aerodynamic EV’s with less charging capability are judged best if you drive 80MPH. At lower highway speeds when aerodynamics play less of a role some EV’s raise in the rankings because they have better charging than aero. I have immense respect for Porsche’s improvements in this regard. A great road trip EV keeps me at a charger the least amount of time we both agree. Form (aero) at the sacrifice of function is something no one wants. Porsche’s latest design is a splendid balance for many improving an already proven EV! #bravo

New Taycan has a 97kW usable battery and at 80mph you averaged 2.5 mi/kW. Leaving for a roadtrip at 100% SOC and arriving at a charger at 10% would give you 218 miles of range at 80mph. 15 minutes of charging gives you at peak speeds basically 160 miles of range at 80mph. So in total, you could travel roughly 378 miles in 5 hours including the 15min charge in the middle and arrive at your destination with 10% again. Your average speed would be 75mph and for a roughly 400 mile road trip it’s nearly identical to a ICE car. Most people aren’t driving 300+ miles without stopping anyways. I know this argument has been played out before with EVs but even with this napkin math and this test shows this car can easily do 400 miles at 80mph just as comfortably and quickly as a ICE vehicle. This isn’t even the most efficient version of the Taycan either! Pretty amazing show of tech.

You should try to get your hands on a Berlin build Model Y RWD with the BYD Blade battery while you are in Germany. It has a pretty flat curve at 170kw all the way to over 50% and when plugged in at high state of charge, still goes up to 170 kw for some time. Overall it charges from 10 to 100 in under 30min and therefor often is a better road tripping car than the LR Model y in Europe with the LG battery.

I never wanted any Porsche ICE car, they just didn’t take my fancy but Taycan, especially in Cross or Sport Turismo wagon style, really do it for me. Hugely overpriced cars new and dire residuals when you want to sell them on but I could live with a used prefacelift Wagon easily, but the dealers here are buying them in cheap and pricing them stupidly high and wonder why they just sit on the forecourts. Business model of used Porsche dealers is crazy. I’m nit particularly keen on the looks of the new Macan either.

For safety reasons it's a very bad idea to leave a gas pump unattended while filling up. While it may only take 3-4 minutes to fill up the driver is stuck standing next to the gas pump until it's finished. With an EV a driver can plug in and instantly walk into the convenient store to buy a few snacks and go to the bathroom while it's charging. The problem is it's not fully charged in that 10 minute convenient store stop. If it was, you could start to make the argument that an EV road trip is actually faster than an ICE road trip, as you aren't stuck standing next to a gas pump for 3-4 minutes before you can walk into the convenient store. BUT i think we are a long way away from arguing that EVs are better road-trippers than ICE vehicles... as impressive as this result was.
