I love your videos and agree with you most of the time. I have, however, had a great experience with my 2015 Altima and the cvt transmission. I did drive it easy and I understood the theory behind it. I also loved the economy. What I didn’t like was the fake shift points in sport mode, defeated the purpose of the transmission. I put a lot of miles on and was happy overall. I would have never toed with it, as well I would never buy one in a bigger vehicle as I do believe they are weaker inherently. The buyer must understand all of this or they will not be happy.

I have a 2011 Altima with 58,200 I bought brand new haven't had a lot of trouble but last week I went to go out and when I pulled out on the road it accelerated at first then went into limo mode. I took it home parked it . When I put the OBD Scanner on it code says P0705 transmission range sensor so I got one and replaced it but the code still comes up, the gear indicator is gone completely except once in a while the R shows up then it's R in any gear. It will crank in gear, the reverse lights stay in constantly and when turned off the accessory is on and off non stop. The only way to stop it is to pull the battery cable. I even bought another switch in case the one I bought was defective and it does the same thing. I have no idea what's wrong with it but I'm about 2 seconds from setting it on fire and be done with it.

I felt the same when I drove my 2013 Altima. The transmission had a higher rev & you could feel it kick in. I spent the first year going back to the dealership over that CVT weird shift. Now, just a hairline shy of 200k miles with nothing but routine maintenance, I can honestly say the problem was me. I struggled during the transition. I'm getting ready to replace it not because of any issues but with being a woman, whom I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know how to change the oil or a flat, so if it did have a mechanical breakdown, I couldn't get to work. I don't know if the CVT Altimas outrun Camry's but I do know that this car has at least another 100K under the hood. The only time it hasn't started right up was because of a corroded battery connection.

I haven't had any problems at all with my 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. I bought it with 35k miles on it and it now has 92k. No trouble with the CVT, no problems at all under the hood really. Tires, brakes, and oil changes (always fully synthetic) are really the only thing that I've paid for. Transmission Fluid was serviced by a Nissan shop at 78k miles. Other than that, my Altima has been excellent and extremely reliable and I drive it a lot! I do hear and read these bad things about the transmissions, though. Curious to see how mine holds up, hasn't let me down yet.

I bought a 2008 Altima few years back for 1800$ with 180,000 miles on it. Now it’s over 200,000 miles. Runs great and no transmission issues. Just normal wear and tear items were replaced. Brakes, intake etc. I also have a 2008 Maxima with 168,000 and only issue I’ve found is a head gasket starting to leak antifreeze. Going to fix that soon :( . I don’t really like how the shifting feels but you get used to it I guess. They do get good gas mileage. My kid drives the Altima now and loves it.

Scotty, we have a 2011 Quest with the CVT and of course the VQ35 V6. At 160k miles the CVT went. We replaced it for a new Nissan OE unit for $3000. We are now at 195,000 miles and everything is still going well. We love our Quest so much and it was in such good condition that we decided to replace the CVT over buying a new van and so far it’s been a good decision. Sometimes it may be a wise choice to repair or replace but I do think that if it was a Sentra or Altima we probably would have junked it. We will probably drive this Quest until the engine blows but at this point it’s runs excellently and except for the usual brakes-hub bearings-maintainance it’s going strong. Thank you for your videos as I have learned a lot from them and you, Scotty!

In 5 to 10 years cvt transmission might be better then they are now and as Scotty said some are better than others. From my personal experience with a nissan I rented for a road trip the cvt transmission felt smoother compared to some transmissions, since they only have one gear you don't feel it shift. But it was also very loud.

My 2007 Nissan Altima, 3.5SE got me to 201,734 miles before it was totaled by a Honda Driver who pulled out in front of me. I would work two jobs and I would commute 360 miles round trip every weekend for work and that Altima did its job. What I find most surprising is that people jump on the bandwagon of bashing Nissans because they did use the CVT en-mass. Especially given the strenuous EPA regulations. What I also find, regardless of car brands, people don't know that ALL TRANSMISSIONS need their fluids changed. Especially Nissans. I made sure to change the fluid every 30,000 miles. I'd race the hell out of that drivetrain and that car did what it needed to do. I like Scotty Kilmer and I'm always up for a car discussion, but Nissan isn't the only company that's far from perfect. I'm glad they stuck with it and are working to improve their products, even if it's some 20 odd years later.

Then I sold it in 2011 & bought a used 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5 S with 36K miles, nice car with really good power from the 4-cylinder & was sporty to drive, but the CVT was garbage & had to have it replaced at 54k miles. It also had problems with the radio where the display would fade when it was hot outside & some of the buttons would sometimes not work. Then over a year later I got rid of it & bought my current 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6 which has been fantastic & no problems so far as expected. Will never ever buy a Nissan again & will always buy Toyota's / Lexus' for the rest of my life.

When I just wanted a new car, I was looking for a Malibu (for something different) or Impala (for more room inside), but decided on a '17 Nissan Maxima SL due mostly to the very nice design (man what curves), sportiness, ride and handling, and of course the CVT with its instant, and I mean instant acceleration (GM offered not the CVT). Never a problem with the '07 CVT and the '17 Maxima V6, 300hp, 264 lb-ft torque CVT is smooth and just amazing. High owner satisfaction in many owner satisfaction questionnaires. CVT is the trans of the future whether you accept that now or not. You don't know what you are missing unless you own one for a while. They grow on you. Manual shifting = passe.
