Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

The grotesqueness of Olivia Colman's performance is also tinged with a very palpable sense of loneliness and sadness. That's what makes it memorable.

Mark - Just trying to imagine never, EVER being able to be 💯 sure that the people around you really care about your wellbeing, and aren't actually plotting some coup to harm you...how terribly depressed she must've been in her adult life. 😔

Mark...sooo true. While she was quite a mess, i too felt sorry for her. She also was pretty ill and had her loss along w/ insecurity, childlike behavior, spoiled, etc but the relationship she had w Sarah was quite poignant. It was all very sad in the end. Fantastic performance I think. She perfectly combined the ridiculous, foppishness and very human lonliness of the character; while making us laugh. That "look at me" scene kills me. I keep rewatching it...and her way of limping (gout!!) back to her room like a child who just got dressed down. Such a quick scene, few lines between them...brilliant!!

@@landonle3308 Then why does she not engage in any "fun" sex with her husband? Even at her wedding night? She gives him a rather unromantic handjob while constantly thinking about Sarah. She says, though, near the end: "Now we need not fight each other any longer. Isn't that wonderful? Now we can stay together(!) in peace!" Sarah slaps her for an answer, though.

Olivia Colman, Glenn Close, Saoirse Ronan, Toni Colette and Viola Davis for 2019 BEST ACTRESS Oscars. If this line-up happen, it would be the strongest since Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep line-up at the 2014 Oscars.
@alexandrotirador5627
@alexandrotirador5627 5 жыл бұрын
@matias balbin Don't be so sure about that because the campaign for Saoirse is very strong come Oscar season. The reviews of her performance are overwhelming and she might just be the dark horse between Colman and Close. Gaga? Ugh mediocre perfomance in ASIB not worthy of a nomination but she will get nominated because of the hype.

@matias balbin Huppert and Portman were the only strong performances for me. And that was the exact line-up that snubbed Amy Adams for Arrival. What a shame.

Replace Ronan and Davis with Carey mulligan and Nicole Kidman it’ll be a strong category
@alexandrotirador5627

@@landonle3308 Oh I'd rather replace Toni Colette. You might have forgotten that Saoirse is already a three time nominee who almost defeated Brie Larson way back in 2016. Critics even proclaim her as the next Meryl Streep and her performance as Queen Mary is powerful and pitch-perfect. And Viola Davis, well... she is VIOLA fucking DAVIS, what more should I say?

Alexandro Tirador nah Toni Colette was great she shouldn’t be replaced. Ronan has a chance to be nominated again next year anyways for little women

I first saw Colman in The Crown as Queen Elizabeth II but I didn't know that she's played both Queen Anne and Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother) as well, IIRC.

Poor Queen Anne, she had 16 or 17 children who all died. My guess is that just was really stressed out by the role as Queen and she couldn't handle the pressure.
