Hey Chrome, For the sake of your viewers where do you recieve your mail mostly?? My guess is you get your mail at your shop? If a Van dweller had to rent a mailbox what kind of cost would that be???

When my mom was in the hospital for an extended stay I had a van dweller stay in her driveway. That way there was activity so it made her home less of a target for vandalism and theft. I told the police chief and the neighbors who knew her about it. It relieved me of worry about her home and the van dweller got to stay in one place for awhile. House or pet sitting is a side hustle for some people. Why not "house sit" in your own home? It worked well in our situation .

A friend of mine got asked to move his bus, he had parked it out the front of HIS OWN HOUSE, the look of the vehicle bothered the neighbours and they assumed he was going to sleep in it and wasn't living in a house in the street. This was a quiet residential area. This is an awesome video Chrome taking people through the process of looking at the different types of areas. My first night as a vanlifer was right out the front of my pervious home , it had become tourist accommodation and I still had a 3 month residential parking permit so I quietly kept parking there and walking to work from there. Everyone knew my van but didn't know I wasn't still living in the house 😄

OTR trucker for years, my hot shot f350 custom build exterior nice custom 3 axle trailer. 1 seat the rest tricked out per DOT rules allowed me to sleep almost anywhere as long as there was room for my 53' trailer. Walmarts, closed malls, off exit rural areas, I even would ask permission at Native reservations, never denied not once. Truckstops were of course designed for that as long as you shop in their store or eat in the cafe once per stop no problem. My big truck had a 6' sleeper and was nice custom paint job never denied anywhere. As long as you don't throw trash out or leave your pee bottle on the curb its ok just be respectful.

You’re so right about ppl being so self involved that they don’t notice you. Hell, I used to worry about dressing up to go to the store. Then someone said, you think they even notice you? No… they’re too into their own moments. Now idc if I run into the store dressed sloppy (for me, which is dressy for others lol). No one will notice!

I have to avoid sidewalk parking as my pup is still getting used to noises when we are truck camping. If he barked at someone going past they might think a dog had been left in there and call the cops, so we go a bit further out of the way. 👍🏻

Great vid on stealth camping. I notice van dwellers all the time since watching van life KZfaqrs but that’s because I’m looking for it. Kinda like buying a car and suddenly noticing others in the same vehicle as yours. I like the guidelines you shared too, not squatting and being in the same spot more than once as well as following the parking signs.

I go car camping and stealth camp in residential areas. It's far easier in a car of course and safer for me out on my own, but I still use blackouts. Keeps the accommodation costs down and means I get to have a couple of days away from home because holidays are out. Great tips, this is the sort of attitude I take. :)

Super interesting and helping, Chrome. Cheers! I feel it’s slightly different in the UK of course, only because we have so much less space but all of your points still apply. Only difference I think is that in the UK if people saw reflectix they’d probably ask questions. But like you said, that could totally be me over thinking it. I tend not to put them up and just use curtains in built up areas
@steelsheen

thats why Chrome uses window covers that are black, when its up against the glass no one from the outside could tell if its super dark glass tinting or if its window covers. reflectix are better suited to be facing inside anyway since reflectix are best keeping heat in than keeping cold out.

I have an older car I sleep in because I cannot find affordable housing. I'm a senior. My car doesn't have dark windows so I have to put window shades up at night. I park in 2 different shopping centers, one by a Walmart, where others also park at night, and the other shopping center is near a Taco Bell that stays open until 2 and 3 am. The one by Taco Bell is close to the storage where I keep my belongings.,, but if I need to sleep longer the other place works better, behind the mall area. I don't park on the street or near residential areas because people who live or work nearby notice you more easily, especially if your car looks "homeless". In the past I was actually on the street without a car for shelter and it was very harsh. I'd rather be dead than go back on the streets. By the way, I'm in Commifornia

I liked the soundtrack in this video, I mean the birds singing early morning. About the cars parked in the industrial area, it could be night shift workers. But could it be workers that sleep at their workplace? They get out when the shift is done but they come back later and sleep on a cot? It would be a strange way to live without paying rent, and your boss and coworkers might think that they were always the first at work?

I’m a retired cop of 30 years and I can tell you most cops don’t care if you are spending the night on the street. The only time they will bug you is if you camp out for a week, someone called or if you are spending the night in a high crime area.

I couldn’t tell you from day to day what cars or vans or trucks park on the street outside of my apartment. The *only* card I notice are those that park across part of my driveway (ie: not fully in the designated parking spot) and make it hard for me to get out to the street. Even then, unless they’re a repeat offender, they’d soon be forgotten. 🤷🏻‍♂️

people camping in one spot in the UK is a big problem, Here in New Brighton we have had campers and motor homes decend on the town (we are near the beach) and literally live on 1 street for months at a time, then they get moved so they all take up home in a car park again for months, they just stay there and dont move...the council has now made most of the area a no overnight parking because of this....its a shame, if they just moved around it would have been fine.
