Welcome back to Fantasy Friday! Today we will be reading chapter 14 of The Fellowship of the Ring. It's a long one and filled to the brim with Middle-Earth's history, so cozy up and enjoy!
1. In Middle-Earth, the Elves are immortal (they cannot die of old age, but they can be killed by violence). Elrond, one of the Elves, recounts all the many ages of history through which he has lived, all the battles he has experienced and suffering he has witnessed. Do you think it would be worth living forever if you have to forever live with these sorts of memories? Would you like to be immortal? Why or why not?
2. When speaking of the potential end of the world, Gandalf says, “Despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt.” What do you think about this? Is he right? Do you think it’s possible for someone to convince themselves they’ve seen the end beyond all doubt? Explain.
