The previous owner of Kurt's Fender Jaguar was Martin Jenner. Kurt bought it from a thrift store and only changed the neck. It was a big disappointment for me to know this detail as a diehard fan and as a musician (I have a lot of their equipment). Nirvana's most iconic guitar, it was not designed/modified by Kurt. You did a great job with your replica, congratulations!

Thank you! Kurt actually didn't change the neck, Martin Jenner changed it in 1981. In 1980 it had the block inlays, but in 1981 it was first seen with it's dot inlay neck. This guitar has always been a favorite of mine, the history is super interesting to me. If you're into Nirvana gear, please consider subscribing! The prices have shot up like crazy too, saw a used one on kjiji already for 2000 cad, and just to order it brand new is $1860. almost two grand.. Feel like I should just bite the bullet and order one though as about 4 or so years ago I had the opportunity to get a lake placid KC Mustang for 900 bucks and now those go for like 3-4 grand. Be cool if they discontinued this and instead made a more accurate representation though but I highly doubt it with the Jagstang. Very good “report” and magnificent reproduction work! Three questions: With a neck radius of 7.25, how did you find a bridge with the same radius ? Why are almost all the pickguard screws missing on the original Cobain? and how is it that the size of the headstock is smaller than yours, which nevertheless dates from 1965, the same date as the original?
@jq.guitars
@jq.guitars 14 күн бұрын
1. The neck has a mismatched radius from the bridge, which has 12" 2. I'm not sure what you're referring to, all the screws are there 3. There are different theories, some think it's one off from factory, others say it could have been shaven down by Martin Jenner.
@paressehylton
@paressehylton 2 жыл бұрын
Hello nice video. Just one thing about the neck. On pictures Cobain’s (real) one looks like a 9.5’’ radius (and with big frets). And since they had to make those neck especially for that signature mode, i guess they went for the real specs
@jq.guitars
@jq.guitars 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for watching. I don't agree that his neck looks like a 9.5 radius, or that his had the big frets. On the picture of my Jag and his Jag side by side, the frets look pretty much identical to my eyes. The frets on my neck are very small, which was the correct spec for 60s Jags
@paressehylton
@paressehylton 2 жыл бұрын
Always been mysterious that jag :-) Maybe i should ask my luthier next time i go. Cause yeah, sometimes the angle of the picture can be misleading. When i look at some pictures it really looks flatter. And i always thought that was the main reason why martin jenner swaped the neck, so it would play better with the tuneomatic radius. And as the ensenada factory they can make both radius for jaguar necks (they do for vinteras), so i thought why wouldnt they go for the real specs? (I thought maybe they would be reluctant to sell 1200$ guitars that dont play great, with 7.25 fretboard and flat TOMs, but they did it anyway with the cobain mustangs)

I'm building a KC Jaguar from a squier Jaguar, with compromise lol. I'm currently trying to get pickup spacing as close as possible based off of pictures. It looks like the neck pickup is slanted slightly, is that right? And there is a pick guard screw right near the bottom left corner of the neck pickup mount, I'm wondering if that hole was re-used to secure the pickup mount, maybe that's why it's slanted. I noticed in your picture of your pick guard at 0:50, it looks like that hole wasn't drilled at all. Also any other tips on getting the spacing right would be appreciated. It almost seems to my eyes that your neck pickup is just a hair closer to the neck than Kurt's? I'd like your opinion on that, since that's the one I'm debating on. The bridge pickup seems right if I line the center of the humbucker with the original pickup holes. But if I do that with the neck, the mounting ring basically touches the neck. But there seems to be a slight gap there on Kurt's. Also my bridge will be slightly slanted thanks to the loose tolerances in the mounting holes, I'll put shims in to angle it the correct way.
@jq.guitars
@jq.guitars Жыл бұрын
The holes weren't drilled at that point. I did that because there isn't a standard for pickup rings, each one is different brand to brand. As for your other questions, I am not sure as I had Lomic Guitars help me make it perfect
@ConkersBFDN64
@ConkersBFDN64 Жыл бұрын
@@jq.guitars Sorry I might have been a bit unclear. I'm taking about the holes for mounting the pick guard to the body, which were there at 0:50. From what I've seen, stock single coil jaguars have a mounting hole at the bottom left of the neck pickup hole area. It is kind of in the way of the mounting ring where it has to go, and yours looks to have omitted it basically. It almost lines up with the hole in my mounting rings.

I know its a project but surely spending more money than buying one from Fender sort of defeats the object. I bet the '65 neck was a chunk of the cost - then you fit white humbuckers instead of cream. Was it really worth the cost of replicating the red tortoise pick guard? A friend of mine bought the Fender Cobain Jaguar and I'm replicating one from a Squier Jaguar. The paint is identical, the body thickness is the same - its a very straightforward conversion,, and won't cost anywhere near £2k even with brand new Dimarzios. You've done a good job but it could have been more accurate and less expensive......

Nope, these were cream humbuckers. The camera just made it look white. Yes, a big chunk of the cost was the neck. The point was to make as close of a right handed replica as I could, cost disregarded. It still came out cheaper than buying a used Roadworn version.

It has an F-plate with serial #95747 It’s a late 65 early 66 Jag. this jag got 3 different necks on it. It came with a dot inlay neck. Martin Jenner changed the neck to a 67-69 one neck with block inlays. And then he get made a custom non original Fender Neck. Kurt’s neck.

@bonvivant55 I meant no compromises as if you were to compare it to a Fender Signature model, which compromises accuracy for mass production. The parts I went with could be made in lefty, as they are custom. I have a lefty friend who is doing that build actually. But, I built something I could play. If it bothers you so much, just mirror the video.

Dude, you have so muuuch eqiuptment - insane! You should start to write you own stuff, im sure you would make a good song writer! And about the guitars.. I don't know man, they sound all three really good and really close to each other. Is it worth to have 3 jags that are sound almost the same? Because each of them is really expensive to have. I know you are a big nirvana fan obviously, me too. I am a musician my self and kurt was a big inspiration for me in terms of song writing and guitar playing. I would recommend to find your own unique style and craft a guitar that suits you the best. With your own aesthetic's, represent your own identity, and invest your short life time to write you own songs. That is what Kurt did, and other musicians. they all had their influences. Please don't get me wrong, im not judging you, if that is what you want, to copy Kurt 100% and make videos how to sound like him, alright do It. But I heard some of your intro sounds, and they have interesting tones. I think it is a waste to spent all your energy to recreate Kurts artistic sound. Cause it is already been created - by kurt himself. So if you want to honor him, then go and take the risk, create some music that never been created and achieve through this something worthwhile. Just my two cents here ;)

I create my own riffs often, and I have more non-Kurt guitars than Kurt guitars. This channel is just dedicated to the Nirvana tone. I did end up selling one of the Jags because like you said, there's no point keeping 3 of the same thing. I buy and sell gear, a lot of the gear that gets featured on my channel ends up getting sold. Thanks for watching!

what an anti-nirvana thing... spending thousands of dollars to have a guitar that he bought because it was exactly what it is... a cheap, second-hand guitar... everything he bought because it was cheap, is now super inflated... this polychorus then, people are selling it for more than 2k, when it was a bum entrance effect...

i would argue caring about not doing anti-nirvana things is an anti-nirvana thing. i don't do this to "be like nirvana", i do it because making replicas is just fun. i used to be really into scale model cars, and building a nirvana guitar is like a fully functional model that you can actually play. also, totally agree on polychorus pricing. i got mine for only $600, which is still much more than id regularly pay for a pedal.
