Idk man, sounds like you just started to love it’s mistakes as much as the things it’s actually had going for it. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it, I see its appeal but by no means is this a “masterpiece”. If it is for you, I can’t deny it. I just have to say that it is a weird gold standard that you have, dude. No hate though.

I'm not sure I'd call it a masterpiece, but it is a genuinely awesome quirky movie. I personally like to point to it as a sort of personification of all things that made the 90s what they were and I love it for that

I wasn’t even alive in the 90’s and I can agree that a lot of old movies are great. T2, Jurassic Park....great computer animated effects. It surprises me how good the graphics were for the CGI even back then.

I LOVE The Fifth Element. Its definately a cult film. The soundtrack is also really cool. Also it's crazy that with each viewing I always notice something new. Like, until this review I didnt even realize that the hero and villain dont meet in this movie.

Pretty sure Leeloo herself isn't the "Fifth Element". Each stone acts as a catalyst, requiring an interaction with its corresponding element to activate. Dallas kissing Leeloo implies Leloo as a catalyst and love as the "Fifth Element".

"What's the point?" is not always a question with an answer. Sometimes a movie is a two hour trip to another world, and that immersion is perhaps the point. It doesn't always matter that the story or tone doesn't add up.

I saw this movie at the right time in life. I was 13 & saw it in theaters. This movie blew my mind. The comedy was perfect for my age range. The action was awesome. And the future world it's set in was absolutely astonishing. The Fifth Element really left an impact on me & will always be my favorite movie of all time.

One of my fave films of 1997! i saw this in theaters 3 times when i was turning 15 and dug it! one of my fave sci-fi action comedy films and it's like the Guardians of the Galaxy of it's time. Check out Leon The Professional and Nikita as well.

Leeloo wasn't the Fifth Element that was love. She was just the perfect being/catalyst that had to feel/be loved to unleash the fifth element

it was established that Leeloo was “the perfect being” early on. she was the only being who was able to withstand the force/power that was shot at the evil entity at the end. lets say some random person was used as the catalyst, they’d be killed. Leeloo WAS the fifth element.

Okay, I guess there are a lot of flashy visuals. If you are a story/structure guy, this movie is like garlic to a vampire. There were times when the writer/director or whoever forgets there's supposed to be a plot. To me, it seemed like a bunch of stuff happening for no particular reason.

@@brianbagnall3029 How so? Every scene in this movie drives the plot forward. There is not one single wasted second. The direction is genious. Everything like music, dialogue, cuts etc. is connected and intertwined in the most imaginative ways possible.

@@brianbagnall3029 Why? It's a pretty basic plot. Yeah at times it does seem that the plot is an excuse to show cool stuff and make the world of the movie feel deeper and bigger, but still, the story is pretty clear.

I did not know that. A lot of the imagery is based off Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Cristin's Valerian & Laureline volume 15: The Circles of Power (flying taxis especially)! Then Mézières worked on Fifth Element then as a concept designer.

I actually worked at a video store when it came out on video and like you said there was no big fanfare. You could tell how good they thought a movie would do by how many copies my small independently owned store ordered. I think we had five or six copies whereas a supposed blockbuster would get twenty or twenty five ordered. But we would only get one or two copies of some movies too. Anyway, It was a total sleeper hit and there was definitely a buzz with movie rental audiences. It was one of my favorite movies of that time period. The word of mouth made it one the more popular rentals for a solid half a year.

I actually saw this movie in the theatre in France, because I happened to be there when it was new! ☺️ It was a REALLY big deal in my world because I’m a fan of fashion, sci-fi, Gary Oldman, classical music and over-the-top divas! ^^ This movie has always been an epic historical moment for fashion nerds because of Jean Paul Gaultier’s costume design and all of the fashion models in it. I’m not a big fan of Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovic, however, so it seems like I appreciate this movie for almost the opposite reasons to what James likes about it! 😅

Pretty sure right off the bat this movie had a large following right when it came out. I remember seeing it when I was a little kid and couldn't get enough of it. Totally classic sci-fi right there.

The easiest way to say it is: if you enjoy "Heavy Metal" - both the magazine and the animated film - you should get "The Fifth Element". It's operating on the same frequency, in terms of style and tone.

LOVED this movie when it came out, a nerd friend of mine was obsessed with it, and got me to see it 3 times in the theater for midnight showings. We left the theater at like 2am in the morning and driving back home talking about the movie and listening to Def Leopard. Good childhood times!

Even as a kid I felt the plot didn't make a lot of sense because it seems like the story just randomly starts but I still love it. The characters are a lot of fun and the world building is amazing.
