Another amazing episode! Remaster ruling FYI: casters can still use "outdated" spells that have been thematically replaced by a spell with a different name. So magus can still use the old attack roll spells that have been thematically replaced by saving throw spells; most notably: Shocking Grasp and Ray of Frost! This is the official Paizo ruling for Pathfinder Society.

Spell compoents in the remaster are completely removed! Also for Sydney, all pre-remaster spells are still valid, unless they got completely reworked and still have the same name. So she can still keep Shocking Grasp for her Magus

Love the longer episode. I know the pre-show banter is part of this groups warm-up to actually playing. My group does the same thing but, only getting an hour or less of gameplay can be disappointing since the story progresses so slowly that way. Might be why their Giantslayer game took 7 years...

I'm sure we'll hear this from Professor Eric, but Remastered light does NOT need to be cast on an object! It has subsumed the functionality of dancing lights in that it makes a little orb of light you can move around (or attach to a willing creature so it automatically moves with that creature).

Joe needs to read the remastered light spell. It creates a moveable orb, they combined dancing lights and the light spell. No longer have to cast it on something.

I was driving and I caught this on Kate's turn around the 42 minute mark on Spotify, she got all excited when she was about to use Zephyr's ki strike focus point ability, rolled poorly on the attack and missed. Well, at this time Monk has not been remastered, and in the Ki Strike ability it allows you to make a strike or flurry of blows as part of that focus point attack, and it is all one action. I believe what Kate did was activate the ki strike and make a bow attack, and then followed it up with a flurry of blows, which does get her more attacks but certainly nerfs her in terms of accuracy and damage overall. So she should have done one action to ki strike with two attacks on her flurry of blows, she may have still missed with all of the attacks but at least it would be using the action economy well.

Doesn’t Foundry have a secret roll feature where the player rolls the check but only the GM sees it. Why not use that for those checks? Use their fancy dice for the public rolls.

Honestly, the *best* first level spell for a Magus for the first few levels is just Magic Weapon. I usually don't even bother with damaging spells for the most part and rely entirely on my cantrips for damage. Though Expansive Spellstrike is such a nice feat for fixing that headache of "which one of these spells can be used to strike".

@@russellcharlton7814 Having to chew through HP block and tactics are brutally important to be able to maximize chance at crits. Joe aiding another(guidance) matters long term. HAVE to debuff them and buff you. (2E in general) but making some rule adjustments is also hard to adapt. With only some changes you have to look at everything individually. Its actually more time consuming because you aren't looking for a total overhaul but nuances. A small change like Astas spell strike no longer working with her shocking grasp(or remaster name equiv) is one such thing. So you are relearning the rules. Slowing down combat, but it will fix itself with more time, like any system. They mentioned in the fod that they are hybriding it because there is weridness with incomplete rules at present. Might change with monster core coming out this week, or at least present less discrepancies. I will say Rolemaster was brutal for characters dying, but combat didn't last very long. Modern game design is like that, very gamey (imo) and tends to take longer than an OSC style game. Though you are more likely to stick around long term unless you name your character lucky.

Shocking Grasp is such a central part of most magus builds, Paizo will have to consider this when they remaster the magus. Until that happens I allow the magus in my game to keep using Shocking Grasp.

Hydraulic push, briny bolt, and horizon thunder sphere are some fun alternatives, but yeah there is no real reason players can't keep using shocking grasp if they like it.

I doubt anything will be done about it. I wholly expect Spellstrike to still be functionally the same, Strike with infused spell. As it's perfectly fine to use legacy content (preremaster) people will still be using Shocking Grasp. Despite speculations, I can't find anything confirming Thunderstrike replaces Shocking Grasp. In fact, official statements seem to confirm you could still use Shocking Grasp even in PFS games. For example Paizo officially addressed the minutiae of it with Ignition and Produce Flame - stating you can learn either spell due to them functionally being different, despite Ignition being the thematic equivalent to Produce Flame.

Upsidely beat me to the punch. As a fellow magus and rules lawyer, pre-remaster spells are generally fine for use post-remaster if the name was changed to something else (which is the case for shocking grasp). As such, Sydney should still be able to use shocking grasp. Hopefully Prof. Eric catches this

Please look up the "interact" action in the remaster (Player Core pg. 268). It has been changed to include the "swap" sub-action which says "Swapping allows you to put away one item and draw another in the same action (such as putting away a dagger and drawing a mace)". Only saying this so that Talitha doesn't have to waste any more actions switching between rapier and crossbow.

A Foundry license is a one-time payment. You still need to pay for a hosting service (Forge is probably the most popular). You can also self-host (which is free), but it requires some technical setup on the front-end.

Sydney, look at Horizon Thunder sphere. It's not in the remaster, but it's in Secrets of Magic, which should still be allowed since the whole Magus class is from SoM. It's not quite as good as shocking grasp, but it's an attack roll, it can be used at range and it's only slightly less damage on the 2 action cast than shocking grasp.

If it hasn't had an official replacement in Core, it's perfectly legal. Paizo even stated you could still choose Produce Flame over Ignition despite the latter being the remastered themetical equivalent spell. Legacy content is still usable, for the most part.

Definitely worth glancing at how spell components work in the remaster. They've basically been gotten rid of, and it's now assumed that every spell is verbal and somatic unless it has a trait called 'Subtle', or something like that?

And very versatile as well, since you can pump up extra action on those combats where fights start far apart (you won't want to engage first) or sneak enemies (like this one), for some guaranteed damage. Or just use the quick 2-action version on spell strike. Win-Win.

Take cover would have worked too. You can press yourselves against a wall to minimize exposure - +2 to AC. Its a useful defensive option. All just for reference :)

Thanks Skid for name-dropping Jenny’s First Year Latin. I took Latin for four years in high school and used that textbook series. Sydney is right in that Latin has not changed (it’s a static language but it’s still used in a lot of contexts in our society) but the method of teaching Latin has changed. There’s been a transition from grammar translation to the reading method. I taught Latin for eleven years and used the Cambridge Latin Course which uses the reading method.
