@@robsonger1 yes Rob it was a fantastic book when I bought it I was actually attending Salisbury wilts technology College for bricklaying I had just turned 15 and two months when I started working for old Charlie Wilkins builders Salisbury wilts we were building about half a dozen bungalows in the little village of porton just outside Salisbury near old sarum spent lots of time digging footings for said bungalows all by hand pick shovel 2 men or in my case half a man lol and each taking turns using pick then the shovel built a lot of muscle not much bricklaying until I finished digging bloody big hole for concrete block septic tank the I got to fill in most of the hole with said blocks one cou say a shit of a job but Charlie was pleased enough I got a two penny a day raise in pay good old days would love to get dimensions for twisted arch jig I can build my own with those basic measurements keep on doing what you do best fantastic video thanks for all the information you provided us all

@@leer798 yeah I've seen all the stupid videos on here of daft house bashing cowboys, pick and dip and shite like that, they get more compo down the cavity than in between the bricks, I would honestly be embarrassed to post them

The crazy thing about house bashers is that they actually really believe that they are good because they say they lay large amounts, and do you know what I've worked with hundreds of them over the years, and they are not that fast anyway, they sit in the bait cabins all day boasting how many they laid here and how much they made there, they are the laughing stock of the building game if they only knew

Those tradesmen long ago had more time than we do and they were taught properly when apprenticeships were 5 yrs, I remember having a 3 year apprenticeship and being mocked by the older guys saying that colleges will never be able to teach us what we need to know in that time... last week I found a college in Kent offering Level 2 in 8 weeks....thats just ridiculous. We were always told it takes 2 years for a lad to lay a brick. Now that doesn't mean it takes 2 years just to lay a brick, it means 2 years to understand most situations of how to lay a GOOD brick and all the implications that go with it. Then, they'd move onto technical stuff/advanced year 3. In my workshop I have a small group and I have space for 3 more....just saying.

@@robsonger1 even though I've been laying nearly 10 years I would definitely come to your workshops to learn some of your amazing skills. if I didn't have a wife 2 kids and lived 2.5 hours away I'd be there like a shot 😂

Our college here in wales will not teach just bricklaying they now do a construction course of 3 trades its pathetic these lads dont stand a chance now they have killed off these trades now

@@robsonger1 If anyone in your area wants to really learn what it is to be a real bricklayer, that's the best opportunity those 3 will ever get! I used to live in your area a long time ago, i'm south of the border now. Glad that your doing vids again, always a pleasure to watch.

@@robsonger1 and i honestly would love to come down and learn something, every days a school day if you live with open eyes.

there are definitely allowances to make in a variety of disciplines, obviously the smaller the tolerance the better the work but in todays world of get'm down the standards have definitely fallen away. For instance the work I am presently doing (pictures on my instagram) are rubbed and gauged arches that is completely new to me. The time during preparation takes longer than to build it, but there is only 1mm max tolerance. This is what most bricklayers 100yrs ago could do with their eyes shut. Perfection these days comes at a cost, but remember, what we build now will be here 100's of years after we are gone, so if something takes an extra day to do rather than slash it up, I believe that extra day of getting it right will last 100s of years. thank you for watching, lots more to come...
