the fine art of brickwork - Victorian Weave Chimney

A miniture Victorian Weave chimney stack, using largely left over cuts from a previous wall built at another part of the project.
The small brick cubes made this very time comsuming but also created the basket effect better than we had hoped.

Mate in some ways I agree but it's very different work, thoughs guys smash up modern work quick and well. This is restoration work. Different game. But yes these guys are one of the best on KZfaq I completely agree. But I have been lucky enough to work on both sides and without experience a modern bricklayer would get this all wrong, wouldn't even know how to look after the motar or mix it up. This wasn't meant to offend just your comment got me thinking. Take care H

What makes brickwork as this, so long lasting not only for the owner but it's author as well... is the fact that both can put their hands to it the rest of their natural days. Reckon I'm tryin to say... ''Them kind'a tattoos are permanent Mister!'' -former brick-lier

@soldtobediers 3 жыл бұрын
@@robsonger1 It is the title to a book that I'd been moved to write back in 2013 about a WW2 Paratrooper Chaplain's answer to ''Why Me God?'' He would explain to the dying soldier asking that question; how their sacrifice was a mirror of the sacrifice Christ Himself had made for our inequities. And how the soldier dying to protect theirs, & other nations lives, fit the scripture given by Christ Himself to fulfill that action found in John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. In order to gain more understanding of the book... Tap my logo and it will take you to an impromptu interview about the book. ''For none are closer to the author of pain & sacrifice Himself... than those who choose to perform it for the sake & safety of others.'' -Former U.S. Paratrooper Sgt. Incredible Rob & Harley !!! Will the rope border that you cut in the face not spall with the weather ? If not, could you explain why please. I've seen decorative bricks that were shaped before firing so they have a glazed face & they're still perfect but I've also seen Norfolk reds that are really badly spalled. I'm only asking as this would be something that I'd love to try. Thank you for such wonderful images. Regards Tim
@robsonger1
@robsonger1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was always taught that the life of a brick would be reduced once the fireskin has been removed and I even taught that to many students. However, a church restoration I did many years ago had some bricks that were cut on the face and I was told to use them, every time I drive past I look to see their condition and they still look good. I also wonder about all the Georgian arches we see, all 6 faces are cut and rubbed prior to laying (I'll be doing this twice in coming videos) and they are all still ok. The spalling of bricks is mainly down to the mortar used being too strong for the brick and the mortar becomes too hard, lifeless and puts all the effort of evaporation into the brick, and wet bricks and frost = longterm costs. Admittedly some bricks in lime mortar will spall, but these are normally the lighter bricks that escaped the intense heat in the kiln and are fired to a lesser degree.

@@robsonger1 thank you so much Rob, that's actually a work changing snippet of knowledge - I'm going to pop into work today and try it out. I figure that I can make a little panel & leave it out. I'm right on top of a hill & get terrible wind driven rain. I'll use lime mortar & see what eventually happens. Thanks once again 👍👍😉😁 Regards Tim

It stays pretty much the same as we use the same bricks everytime. However, the next job will be overseen by English Heritage so no OPC will be allowed. The mortar will be a dry, bagged, premixed hydraulic lime and we are currently undergoing test panels to decide on the brick and the mortar that best compliments what we are matching into.
