How Farms Work try adding on of those "shanks" on your disc it should help get rid of the furrow that they leave behind without one. and the baskets on the back if you are in wet areas and those start to plug you want to unplug it before it gets dry otherwise it gets like concrete

The benefits of vertical tillage is not only chopping cornstalks but preserving soil structure so as to increase topsoil organic matter and the water storage capacity of the soil and the subsoil. Vertical tillage also helps to reduce or eliminate the "hard pan" layer which in turn allows plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil so as to utilize deeper water reserves and nutrients. It also keeps water from running off as much as it happens with conventional tillage. Research has shown that corn yields can increase up to 17.5 bushels verses conventional tillage per acre depending on the weather conditions.

Try out a McFarland Incite 5000, we have one and it works very well because it has a row of flouted disc blades then a soil beater to break up clumps then another row of disc blades then a 3 bar drag and finally a rolling basket to top it off on the back and level things off really nice

Ryan- Trying this tool represents a total change in your approach to soil management.We have these things all over the place. When asked in the past why you disk so deep and chisel so deep (Dad said 12-14 inches) you said because it works for you. Why now do you think 2 1/2 inches is the way to go? You are changing from primary tillage to minimum tillage. If it works, it would have always worked. Shallow disking will accomplish a lot of the residue sizing and management this new vertical till will do. (not as fast or as well, mind you) I guess what surprises me is old ways are hard to die. Disking 8 inches deep was what worked for you, what happened??? You may not like the look of the job it does. One negative this tool has around here is residue movement. Under the right conditions the trash will blow and float away. Friend raked it up in his yard into big windrows and lit on fire. Wife wouldn't speak to him for a week after wreaking the yard. Others have been called out to unplug ditches that filled with corn residue and caused some flooding. Glad to see you guys trying to experiment with reduced tillage. doug
@HowFarmsWork
@HowFarmsWork 7 жыл бұрын
Not only could we just do a pass in the fall and in the spring, but if we decide to chisel it after the first pass (to size the stalks) then it wouldn't be much different from what we do now with the disk. It really does a better job in comparison the the JD disk, hopefully this will reduce passes with tough corn stalks.

@HowFarmsWork
@HowFarmsWork 7 жыл бұрын
+AWD3264 We disk what we can, some ground is purely no-till, others are a little no-till, then what we own is purely tilled for the fact that I've noticed tilled ground always does better on a good year. This will give us some flexibility to work with landowners so we can get those stalks knocked down but still keep soil disturbance minimal.

A used Earthmaster no-till is around $40K. That's a lot of money for a small farm like yours. I'm wondering if/what the payback time is. I know you are getting the no-tillage equipment for no cost, yet if you were to have purchased it, that would be a huge expenditure for just chopping up corn stalks. Isn't there a better way of doing that type of work? Certainly, since modern farming implements have been around for a hundred years now, there would have been an entrepeneur who would have built a better mouse trap for a cheaper price. I feel sorry for the small farmers. They seem to always get it in the butt whenever a new piece of equipment comes on the market. Sure that equipment is better than an old Ford n8, but dang, a hundred grand for a tractor, another fifty K for an implement and then there is the cost of fertilizer, soil amendments, insurance, and seed.....Farmers get screwed quite often by so many different types of money bleeders. I hope this all works out for you financially, Ryan. I for one am grateful for your hard work. Please don't get discouraged because America needs farmers like you to feed us. God bless.

I bought a 27" 7.5" spacing many years ago from an IH dealer. He said I could not pull it with a John Deere 4850 mfd. He just had bias things to say about JD. Now I do no till mostly and with the larger JD that needs a 30 ft. and can not be spending so much for the limited times I use it. A disk is not meant to be pulled over 6 mph because it starts to float at high speeds. 2" deep seems to be shallow to pull very hard.
