@Scarface Kritikos They were literally Roman though. No one called them byzantines. They called themselves Romans, and were the direct continuation of Ceasars Rome. The term byzantium was coined by some german historian long after the Roman empire was conquered by the turks. He was a member of the Holy Roman Empire in germany. So he refused to believe that the Roman empire was really the roman empire. Pretty silly if you ask me.

@Scarface Kritikos The Roman Empire was never Latin Catholic. Ever. At any point in history. When the Empire "split" it was seen as a governmental split simply. It was one Roman Empire with two emperors to govern it more easily. The Roman Empire has been split like this before. The only reason we still called them one Roman Empire, was because they reunited under one emperor, and none of those sections of the Empire ever fell, like the West did the last time. Before the west fell, it wasn't a latin Empire, or a catholic one. It had become Christian, but the church would not split into orthodox and catholic before wayyy later in the middle ages. As I said, the empire was not just a latin one. Many were bilingual. Especially politicians, scholars and Emperors. They spoke both Greek and Latin as the empire had those as the TWO major languages. Latin being the lingua franca in the west, and the language of governance and the bureaucracy. And Greek being the lingua franca in the east, and the language of science and philosophy. The greek parts were a CORE part of the Empire. The capital was even moved there before the split. To constantinople. A predominantly Greek city. When the west finally did fall there was no question that the remaining east was the Roman empire. The emperor spoke latin still, and latin was the language of governance. Emperor Justinian also almost reconquered the west, but eventually Rome would lose it as it weakened. At this point people already call it the byzantine empire today. Which is silly. Everyone called it the Roman Empire back then, and it was still a bilingual empire. Eventually, over centuries, Latin fell out of favor and Greek also took over as the language of governance. Which makes a lot of sense as the people in the east mostly spoke Greek. This did not suddenly change which empire it was. Greek had always been a major language, latin simply slowly fell out of favor as no one spoke it anymore. Not even in the west. Only the catholic church. The people living in italy spoke off shoots of latin. So of course, it was still the Roman empire. No one called it Byzantium while it existed. Literally no one. When the church split and later on the HRE was established, mainly germans started calling it the Greek empire, because they wanted to claim that they were rome. But the term Byzantium wasn't used for it before a hundred years after the fall of Constantinople. If you actually read my comment, and knew anything about the history of Rome, you would know that it literally was the Roman Empire. When in the world would it have stopped being Rome and instead byzantium anyways? When it split? No one alive at the time would agree, they would simply laugh and say there is only one Roman Empire. When the language of governance changed to greek? Laughable. It was a gradual process. And Greek had always been a major language in the empire even before the split. I find it funny people try to deny that it was Rome. There is a literal direct line of succession from Julius Cesar to Emperor Justinian in the east who reconquered Italy.

Greek was a very dominant language along with latin already way before the split. Silly point to try and make. Their core lands were Greece and Anatolia So? They had been core lands of the Roman Empire since it was conquered. Even before the split the capital of the Empire was literally there. In Constantinople. They were orthodox Christians, not Roman or Latin Catholic. No, they were not. Not at first at least. And the Roman Empire had never been Roman or Latin Catholic anyways. So silly thing to say. The church split into Catholic and Orthodox in the middle ages, centuries AFTER only the east was left.

Yeah, it definitely raised some questions but it was so close to Byzantine territory I think it would’ve been hard for the crusaders to keep it.

@@HistoryHouseProductions I agree, I suspect they wanted to loot it (which was what Alexios feared and is thought to be why he made those deals with the turks as you said) but regardless, Alexios gave some consolation gifts but he had not told them in advance and the crusaders definitely viewed it as a betrayal.

I reckon part of why Bohemund kept antioch was because of its religious significance and that he hated the byzantines anyway being norman and all and having participated in the invasion of the empire you mentioned at the start. But his opinions of the byzantines definitely wasnt helped by nicea
