The idea of a “European Dark Age” is a misnomer. Historians don’t use it anymore for good reason. It is true there was a societal breakdown in parts of Western Europe after the loss of Roman authority. However soon after new states and power structures arose to take Romes place. Great art and architecture sprang out of this period. It also ignores the Byzantine East completely. Which thrived in the so called dark ages. All that aside, even if you want to call it a dark age. I have no clue how you could blame it on the early spread of islam which was stopped at the Pyrenees mountains and at Constantinople. Also the invasions of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain happened six hundred years before the Crusades. It’s not a good argument for the crusades being defensive. Maybe if a crusade was launched in the aftermath of those invasions. The only defensive part of the crusades was the help they gave to the Byzantines in Anatolia.
