This black and white short film is the first known film about football match, filmed on the Lumière cinematograph, 33 years before FIFA's 1st World Cup, 1897. Directed by Alexandre Promio. Produced by Auguste Lumière, Louis Lumière

They may not "suck" but they probably wouldn't be competing at the top. All you need to do is watch older olympic games of the earlier part of the past century, in particular gymnastics and you'll see just how much things have changed and how high the bar has been raised. The same applies to most disciplines.

You have a footage from 1901 between Liverpool and Newczsttle that shows far more rythme and movement, and it's only 4 years from this one. You also had 18.000 expectators on 1901. I guess yhe English were far move developed in football than the french during those times

Look up the French national team results from that time. They were getting smashed 15-0 etc by England Amateurs. At the 1908 Olympics they lost 17-1 to Denmark and 9-0 Denmark B. It was so embarrassing that they then immediatelt flew back home and withdrew from the third place play offs.
