Today I take us on a journey to experience the original effects used on guitar. Along with Nick and Zach, I jam on some groovy tunes that may sound vaguely familiar using these original effects. In the comments below, let me know what your favorite effect from today was, which one you think affected electric guitar and music the most, and your favorite early distorted guitar tone from between 1945 and 1955.

I don't know heaps about Guild other than Muddy Waters is pictured with a black one, and I just bought a powder blue Starfire (a recent reissue) to play out with, as my old Harmony's are starting to kvetch about being too old for late nights. So what kind of Guild Amp is it? Is it the 60s combo type like I saw? (I just read the rest of Ur post after writing this)

Louis Jordan always had distorted guitar on his tracks back to the 40's. Check out Saturday Night Fish Fry. Even used the term "Rockin"

Now this is a crying shame that more people aren't subscribed and that these very informative and fun videos JHS provides consistently don't get a ton more views. Keep up the great work both in your Business ventures and of course with these amazing KZfaq videos. Cheers and Thank You!

The record time segment is amazing because it exposes me to music I haven’t heard(one of my greatest joys in life) and it forces me to watch til the end. KZfaq genius right there

Question 1) you stole my thunder for early cranked and distorting guitar. Nothing beats those Howlin Wolf Sun and Chess tracks. Hubert Sumlin was pretty special - although I think Willie Johnson might still be the main man on that record before he didn't want to move to Chicago with Wolf. 2) Uni-Vibe is the bomb. Best effect all day long. Other stuff can sound great, then you turn the vibe on and just accept the truth.

my favorite amp is the Bugera V5 because if you turn the wattage used to 1W and turn the volume all the way up, it distorts the sound coming out of the amp and gives the most beautiful sounding overdrive your ears will ever hear.

Rumble by Link Wray, on a technicality - it was released in 1958, but recorded in 1954.

@@sambac2053 I read that Link Wray "discovered that 'loosening' a tube in his amplifier delivered a pleasing growl". An oxidized, intermittent tube socket connection perhaps?

@@goodun6081 That was Paul Burlison, he said it got knocked. Link Wray punched holes in his speaker, with a pencil. I think the loose tube would lessen power, reduce clean overhead, so with volume cranked, the output would be distorting essentially overdrive. I hear overdrive and fuzz as very different.

@@sambac2053 , I know the name Paul Burleson, don't recall if I ever actually heard him. Train Kept A-rollin, correct? Roy Buchanan said he used to cut slits and his speakers with a razor blade and dunk them in water and then let them dry out. As for a loose tube in your amplifier, I don't know to what extent disconnecting a preamp tube would be likely to add distortion, perhaps if one half of the phase inverter tube wasn't conducting because the tube was shifted sideways in the socket and not making contact at the plate or Grid, in which case only one output tube would really be conducting any signal. Or, if one of the output tubes shifted a little bit in a loose socket and either wasn't heating up, no voltage to the filament, or maybe it wasn't getting any audio signal to the Grid, in which case a fixed bias type amplifier would be going into Runaway because it wouldn't be getting any negative voltage at the grid either! Regardless, if only one output tube was functioning, or you pulled one of the output tubes temporarily, you get a very imbalance signal and lower power output, that would probably distort pretty significantly when pushed.
