It's about time I reviewed one of my favorite book series of all time - "The First Law" by Joe Abercrombie. I've mentioned my love for these books quite a few times on my channel before, but since I just got done rereading the trilogy - I thought this was the perfect time to tell you about it in more detail, and let you know why you absolutely should read it as soon as possible. Do you have a favorite dark fantasy book or series? Let me know in the comments!
Want to check out "The First Law" books, but don't have time to read? Try the trilogy in audiobook format while also supporting my channel by checking out Audible with a free 30-day trial, including a free audiobook: www.audibletrial.com/impression

Just finished the last book in the trilogy today, and I find it hard to part with these characters and the fascinating world Joe Abercrombie created. However, the last book left me feel a bit dumbstruck, couldn't entirely believe the way things had turned out at the end. Some plot twists felt a bit predictable, while others left a hole in my heart for the characters who "went back to the mud ". Definitely check out other stand-alone novels later on. Thank you for the video and your thoughts on these novels.

NICE!!! The only Joe Abercrombie I've read is 'Some Desperado', a short story in 'Dangerous Women', an anthology of short stories/novellas edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois that features many different writers and, well, dangerous women characters! You're TOTALLY right about Abercrombie's writing of action scenes -- I, too, can get confused as to what's happening during action scenes in stories, but 'Some Desperado' was in a way like one big action set piece, and Abercrombie writes it all so clearly that it's just very natural and easy to visualize. On my to-reads/listens are 'The Blade Itself' and ‘Half a King' )) As always, thank you for the wonderful video!!! (and cool background music, too) ))

What an excellent book review. It's so refreshing to find a book reviewer that doesn't spend half the duration of the video squirming and/or fangirling instead of giving actual information about the book. So, thank you for that! I am interested in reading this trilogy but there are certain things that I can't deal with (like babies beign murdered, which is why I abandones GoT), is anything like that in the books?
@sgtslick7
@sgtslick7 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, no babies die. Its violent for sure in parts but its not gratuitous. Also, I personally find a lot of the violence to be kind of exaggerated in a funny kind of comic book way if that makes sense. Like in one scene, Logan headbutts this guys' face "billy goat" style Abercrombie describes it as. Caving in his cheekbones, breaking his jaw etc. This is probably the most violent scene in the books and it sounds pretty extreme I know, but its not like some graphically violent books/descriptions where it makes you feel squeamish (not for me anyway), its kind of fun, in a sick way ^^

Hi Mari, just two quick questions. Are there any complex female characters in the series? I like fantasy a lot but now that I’ve read some series with a good mix of male and female characters, it kinda bugs me when a trilogy is just about unsavory men and wenches, if you know what I mean. Second question, how did you find out about Joe Abercrombie? I’ve read Jim Butcher and Neil Gaiman along with lots of traditional fantasy, but your videos are the first I’ve heard of Joe. He sounds really intriguing. Love your skull that nonchalantly appears throughout the video )) Nice touch 💀

I'm definitely planning to finally read some Scott Lynch this fall - those books have been on my to-read list for YEARS, so this year I am determined to read them. I keep thinking about Malazan, everyone always recommends them, but that series is so long - it's been intimidating me forever haha

@@ImpressionBlend You're going to love Lynch. I have no doubt that Lies Of Locke Lamora will become one of your favourite books of all time. Yes, Malazan is very intimidating. I got stuck halfway book 8 (so close!) and haven't picked it up in two years. Erikson writes the most spectacular book finales I've ever come across, but before that you always have to plow through 800 pages of slow build-up with lots of internal monologues, and it gets worse as the series progresses. It's been worth it every time, but it can definitely be a struggle.

For anyone who read the The First Law Trilogy: If you haven't read the follow up standalone books you simply HAVE TO. Especially if you're planning to read the new trilogy. The standalones are: -Best Served Cold - a heist/revenge story. -The Heroes - a 360 view of three-day battle with dire consequences. -Red Country - an achievement in genre-blending, and I'll say no more. These are all novels taking place in the same world, with focus on different characters, mostly new ones, but a few familiar ones too, sometimes taking the center stage or just showing up for various reasons. For most First Law series fans, the standalone novels (sometimes referred to as the standalone trilogy) are Abercrombie's best work. The books are loosely connected, taking place a few years apart from each other, and therefore best read in chronological order to avoid spoilers, as events in each one influence the other, even though most characters are different in each book. There is a consensus amongst Abercrombie's fans that the standalones are BETTER than the first trilogy, as Joe really experiments with genre blending and super creative character work here. They are simply fantastic, and two of them (Best Served Cold and Red Country) even take place in parts of the world we haven't seen before. It's impossible to recommend them enough.

I've really been anticipating this video. I picked up "The Blade Itself" on your recommendation M., and truth be told, I didn't finish it. The writing style just didn't appeal to me even though the characters were finely drawn. I'm not giving up though. I'm going to pick it up and try again. I especially liked your comment about taking these novels as one big story in three acts, the first book being an introduction.

I wish you had a spoiler review. P.s that version of the book (10th anniversary edition) don't ever, ever, ever order it online. There is zero % chance of getting an undamaged copy. The copy you get will 100% look like it's second hand. Like it was read multiple times over a 10 year period as someone's favorite book. And after reading it once yourself it will age another 20 years. The cover wipes away with the slightest touch ffs. I really regret not getting the other hardcovers which were also full size. And probably didn't have the horrible English way of dialogue with apostrophes instead of quotation marks. Which is crazy because I ordered these copies after reading 2 chapters on my ereader, liked it so much wanted some nice edition. And loved the cover on these.. man what a let down. Absolutely love the story to death. But my copies of the books, that I spend 50 euros on even though I already owned all three books on ereader are a horrific disappointment. And at this point I can't really sell them for a decent price since they are super beat up. And I can't get nicer versions because the other hardcover is no longer being sold where I live. P.s. like yours my 3 copies don't even match in the shade of their color. Or their style tbh, the first book has a completely different font for chapters etc. Ho, and if you're expecting something extra since this is an anniversary edition? Don't. No map. The writer doesn't like maps. There is only sorta fan maps basically that you can look up online. Zero artwork. In fact not even a Table of Contents! So which made it much harder to look stuff up when I wanted too. Such a shame for what are otherwise the 3 most brilliant books I've read in a long time

I read "Half a King" a while ago, and meant to continue the trilogy, but didn't for some reason. I'll probably finish it once I'm done with his other books, but I found myself missing the darkness, as it's a YA trilogy so it's a lot more tame.

I just started reading this. Disliked the cover and wanted to change it on my ereader. Looked up the book covets and found these ...so tempted to order a hard cover. Man they look cool. Also will have to change the cover for my ereader since man the cover i have is fugly Also, the names writer keeps reminding me of that brand and the I think original covera of the books make it seem like some fashion magazine trying to be edgy

I totally agree that Joe Abercrombie has ruined all other fantasy books for me. There is no comparison. Joe Abercrombie is my favorite author. I have read all his published work. The Trouble With Peace is my current favorite, probably to be bypassed by The Wisdom of Crowds.

@@ImpressionBlend Do not. DO NOT be intimidated. You will miss out on it if you do that. You can take solace in knowing that you can take a break after book 4. So knowing that you only have 4 books to go through at once will make it seem much more approachable. Now having said that , Go for it!!! I want to see it pop up on your channel thumbnail one day. There's also a Malazan read along going on right now on KZfaq. Everyone's on their 2nd book with many more joining in everyday. Jump in.

I read "The Blade itself" last year, and I agree with everything you said. This book is honestly much funnier than loads of supposedly funny books. And, I never ever thought that a torturer's POV would be my favourite. But, Gloktas' inner thoughts are pure gold. I read few chapters of the second one, but stopped. I am really put off by the very strong similarties to our real world. I mean "Angland", and "The Gurkish Empire"!!!. The Medieval Europe setting is also not very appealing to me anymore. I am just tired of it. So, I set it aside. *Semi-Spoilers* My question: Does the rest of the trilogy follow the real world historic arc? because, I have no interest reading the rise of the British Empire. I really hope the answer is No.

I'd really like to help you, but I don't really know how to answer your question, since it sounds like you have multiple issues with the books. If you're put off by the fact that the nations in this world are clearly inspired by real historical cultures, that's not going to change. Abecrombie is pretty upfront about the fact that the Gurkish are essentially the Ottomans while the Union represents a European colonial Empire (although he sees it less as a British Empire analogue and more like a mix between the Holy Roman Empire and the Venetian Republic). If the generic medieval setting bothers you, the subsequent books in the series show a clear technological progress from a late medieval/early Renaissance level to a more industrialized society, and the stories become more varied and less concerned with subverting the basic tropes of the fantasy genre. "Red Country" in particular has much more in common with a Western than a medieval fantasy novel in terms of narrative structure and aesthetics. As for your "rise of the British Empire" concern, I'm not sure what you mean by that, since the Union already is a colonial empire from the story's beginning. If you're worried that the books have a pro-imperialism narrative, I can assure you that's not the case - quite the opposite, in fact, as the Union and the Gurkish Empire are portrayed as equally repressive and expansionist. The only major difference between the two is that one justifies its conquests with capitalism and the other with religion.
