In this video documentary we’re taking a look at the First Opium War of 1839-1842.
➡️ The first Opium war was a devastating west meets east story that holds grievances that are still significant today.
➡️Reflecting on the history of China, we’ll be taking a look back at the first opium war of 1839-1842. By the early 19th century over 90 percent of the Qing Dynasty court and many members of the army were opium addicts, whilst Britain was economically and literally addicted to tea. 🌱
When China tried to ban the use of opium and stop Western smugglers from bringing it through its gates, England decided to fight to keep open China's ports for its importation causing the first opium war of 1839-1842.
➡️ Britain was economically and literally addicted-to tea, primarily grown in China, and ended up paying for it with profits made from the illicit opium trade.
When China tried to ban the use of opium and stop Western smugglers from bringing it through its gates, England decided to fight to keep open China's ports for its importation.
As one of the contributing factors of the Pacific War, we’ll be exploring how the first Opium war contributed towards the beginning of some of the biggest history of China.

What did you think of this rather long episode? How badly did I miss pronounce names & places =(? Let me know in the comments below!

Honestly it’s a pretty good overview. Just curious though: in two episodes I haven’t heard you use the name Russell or reference Yale University’s Skull and Bones connection to both opium wars. I think it’s a rather underrepresented in most “takes” on this time period. The Uk was the primary opium smuggler, but there’s a lot of relevant interconnections in the US drug trade and how influenced China into the century of shame. Hope you haven’t read about the Russell family and the connections to the opium war and intelligence agencies...only cause its gonna be fun for you to dive in:) thanks for this stuff

@@thethreeedgedsword7253 To be frank, I specialize in Japanese history 18th-Pacific War and had to educate myself with Chinese history. I will read up on this. It was very difficult mind you to narrow so much down for even a 45 minute long episode! I barely touched on Jardine and Matheson for that matter!

The Pacific War Channel ugh you said Matheson, awesome! That makes me happy. I want to clear up though, I don’t want to take away from your work. What you’ve been doing and are doing is brilliant. Very few historians touch on the deeper history of the Pacific War. Most just see it as Pearl Harbor/Iwo Jima/atom bomb. I merit you could easily end up with 20 one hour long videos and you’d still feel like you were scratching the surface. I know I always end up with more questions than answers, and I kind of think most historians think the same. I really look forward to your future videos. I’ve studied WW2 history all my life, so I get excited when stuff like this is made.

For my episode on first opium war/second opium war and Taiping Rebellion the clips are coming from: The Opium War (1997), The Warlords (2007) and CCTV's "The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom".

Most for the opium war episodes its "the opium war" (1997) and if you look up this movie on youtube you will find 2 copies of it to watch (its a hard film to find also)

Opium trade didn't cause a silver crisis. Panicked observers guessed that China's wealth had been reduced by 50% - the reality was probably around the 19%. Despite this perception, it is far from clear that opium was exclusively to blame for the silver famine. Julia Lovell, The Opium War (Pan Macmillan Australia, 2011)

Interesting video about a topic that are seldom discussed. The fact that these events had an influence on events that led to WWI and WWII are barely understood now. All in all good stuff. One complaint, if you are going to discuss historical figures and places, learn how to pronounce their names. General Gough's name is pronounced "Goff", and you never heard the word "plenipotentiary"?...I learned it in 5th grade. Those were just 2 examples of several.

The government directly refused to reimburse the British opium traders, and only a small proportion of the government supported the war. The decision to go to war was made on the basis of other factors, not to reimburse traders.

Appreciate the video but please let me help you with your pronunciation. "x" makes a "sh" sound in Chinese (Lin Ze-Shiuh), and Canton is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable. "can-TAWN."

Also q makes a "ch" sound in Chinese. Qishan is pronounced "Chee-shon"

It's confusing, the way we phonetically translate Chinese into English doesn't make much sense to me 😥
@johnchao2422
@johnchao2422 2 жыл бұрын
@@jesusistheonlygodamen3406 yeah it's because it isn't phonetically translated into ENGLISH per se, but rather romanized into our latin alphabet. the sounds the letters make in pinyin are similar to the sounds the letters make in english, but not identical. takes a bit of learning to get it down, but it's not too hard because the rules are very consistent.
