Considered one of the most recognizable sports cars in the history of the automobile, the Porsche 911 debuted in September 1963 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. A radical departure in form from the four-cylinder Porsche 356, the 901 represented the most advanced thinking of Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche - a rear-mounted, flat six, giving the car both power and traction.
First called the 901, the new model was renamed the 911 when Peugeot claimed the worldwide trademark rights to all three-digit car model designations with a "0" as the middle number. This car is one of about 40 cars built in mid-1964 before official production of the 911 started - that’s why it’s designated a 901 and not a 911. Advanced in comparison to the Volkswagen-derived Porsche 356 engine, the newly designed Porsche 901/911 power unit was a two-liter, air-cooled flat six that produced 130 horsepower. Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour was a brisk 8.3 seconds.

Thanks, would be great if you could do a video where you point out the subtle differences between this 901 and the first 911. I saw this car last week in the vault, awesome!

was this edited and reposted? the original was uncut, and had a slip when Leslie calls VW Porsche and mixes it up, then let's an explitive slip. I loved it, and instantly liked him. it shows he is striving to get it right, and a minor error he takes seriously. I guess they had to pull it out, but it made him look more like a car guy than the librarian look he's been sporting for so long. I mean, I know it a museum, but it's cars. man!

So wonderful these videos by Petersen. Just like the Porsche, precise, no fluff, facts and aimed at the enthusiasts. Thank you

I have a 1965 early serial number and I would guess 90%-95% original -- only thing I know not is a repaint in the 1980's probably - otherwise, no rust and in excellent condition -- body and engine. Car runs every crank even though I don't have time to drive it much in rotation with other cars. Looking at the 901 -- it looks almost identical to my 1965 911 and I cant tell the difference with the video. The wood grain dash, the wheel hubs, the front fog lights, the front bumper, the rear -- everything seems so similar. i would be interested in the differences...

There is no difference. Only difference I seen is the fog lights. 65 911 what I seen there is trend of a yellow tent vs clear.

It was an amazing design for it's day and so suitable for further development. Just think from what started here as the 901 benefited later with so much racing technology from the track being brought to the model. To think of a car designed in the early 1960's really coming into it's own on the race track in the 70's and then it's derivatives dominating into the early 80's in really unheard of today. The fact that this car really made it to the 1989 MY is even more mind blowing. Imagine Ford selling the 1964 Mustang that long or the C2 Vette.
