This strange script under Sturmanskie logo says: "1MCHZ Im. Kirova" that means "1st Moscow Kirov's Watch Factory". This factory produced watches of the brands like Poljot, Pobeda, Moskva, Sputnik, Kirovskie, Rodina, Ocean, Seconda etc. It was really big factory indeed. Built from scratch for Soviet Union by Dueber-Hampden Co. in 1930. And about "real or not". The production of this watches ("Shturmanskie" maens "Navigator's") was ONLY for the air force. They did not go on open sale, the watches were issued to military pilots ONLY when they entered the regiment as part of uniform. It is logical that Gagarin was a pilot and received this watch along with everyone else. So, it is not any kind of "legend". Yuri Gagarin's watch, which he wore during the space flight, can be seen in the museum of the Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow. Exactly the same. Shturmanskie. And the size is quite large for era, like all pilot's watches then. I think somewhere around 36 mm, don't know exact size.

I actually own the original. Absolutely amazing little watch. I got it soaked by accident in a spring in the mountains, was not very happy about it, but took it like a champ. I renovated the whole thing over again.

The caseback has a certain Gagarin-trapped-in-carbonite look. I took my Maktime-era Shturmanskie panda chronograph to an ex-Soviet watchmaker in Tel Aviv to replace a smashed glass. He exclaimed over it, and ran to a friend's shop to get the right bombé glass. It clearly made his day. It's currently sitting in a watchmaker's shop in London waiting for a part. Great to see some Soviet quasi-historical pieces examined after years of KZfaq creators focusing on Chinese quasi-historical chronographs!

Hey Jody. The 'logo' in between the pinion and the branding is the symbol of the 1st Moscow Watch Factory, where all our favourite vintage Soviet timepieces were made!

This watch is supposedly the second one in space. The first one apparently belonged to the soviet aerospace engineer, Dr. Abraham Genim and was a Pobeda. He sent it up with the space dog Chernushka aka Blackie. He originally hoped that he would never see it again but both Blackie and the watch returned home safely and he got in trouble for his unauthorized stunt.

My wife’s mother was at medical school in Tchakalov when Gagarin was training as a pilot. He asked my mother-in-law for a dance, but she refused him. Her best friend really liked him and she eventually married him. The next time my mother-in-law saw him, it was on the telly being driven through Red Square! I said to my wife, what a big mistake her mum made!

Finally! My favourite watch! I got a beige dial version and I love it! Such a lovely "connector" for guys who love watches and space. I was too late to discover 33mm version but well... I still love 40mm version.

Great video! I love my Штурманские. It’s my everyday watch. I believe it to be from the 60’s or 70’s but I’m not positive. It has a black face in this style but with the addition of a seconds hand below the red star at the bottom and no hacking motion. Simple brass frame and it’s definitely the smaller model. The lume on the hands and numbers still work pretty well if you give them some time to charge. They hold light a lot longer than this one. It keeps time well, but gets about 5 minutes fast when it gets time to wind it. All in all, i love this watch.

I love this watch. So much history behind it. I have 2 Pobeda from the 50s and even with 33mm cases (exactly the same case of the original sturmanskie) they look gorgeous.

Manual wound simple Vostok movements are also usually quite easily regulated and surprisingly accurate, even the ancient ones :D I have a vintage 119 case amphibian that is the barrel-tonneau case shape but with 18mm lugs unlike the 22mm modern 090 one, and with a thickness of 10mm with the domed acrylic included. The beautiful deep sunburst green lacquer now has spider web cracks on it, and those cracks have a golden hue to them, it is like a golden lightning storm on a sunburst green sky, absolutely amazing. Gains around 10s/day which for a 50year old movement isn't bad i think. Had a service a couple years back, the guy told me it was the first time it has ever been serviced :D . The watch cost me around 70usd, the service cost me like under 30 with a new acrylic and postage included :D

I hate to be a killjoy! A Pobeda 34-K was first watch in space, preceding Gagarin's flight by a month. The watch was attached to a dog called Chernushka [Blackie] who enjoyed the flight in Sputnik 9 on the 9 March 1961.

I decided to add the 33mm version of this watch to my collection. I'm very pleased with it. It wears larger than anticipated. It averages - 10s per day. I believe the characters above the pinion represent the 1st Moscow Watch Company.

also the russian beneath Sturmanskie is the abbreviation of "first mechanical watch factory named after Kirov", which was the original factory for sturmanskie, however the company went bankrupt and was bought by a company named Volmax. Volmax is known for using NH35s in these supposedly "russian" models. I highly encourage you to open the case back since the sturmanskie movement should have a beat rate of 18000, like almost all other russian movements.

While not the favorite watch in my collection this watch has grown on me after purchasing it on impulse when I was buying an Amphibia last year (sold through the same store). It's light, easy to read and always gets comments which can get some interesting conversations going.

Shturmanskie produces a very wide range of models: some have quartz movements, the Poljot 2609 you feature here, the Vostok 2416b without a date window (brilliant idea - no ghost position, of course!) - you can even get one with the NH36 for $350-$450 depending on the design. They have certainly emulated Seiko when it comes to value for money. I have a "Sputnik 1957" model with the 2609 movement. Loses 20 - 30 seconds a day depending on how long it's been out of the box, but it is great fun, having an "orbiting satellite " instead of a regular second hand (OK, the little Sputnik is stuck on a transparent disc!). Cost $250 at my usual shop here in Moscow. As you say, they make a nice counterpoint to Vostok, but I think their prices come with a bit of an "ouch " once you've bought an Amphibia or four... I’ve looked at one of these Sturmanskies a couple of times as I love the idea of it being the first watch in space but similar to the questions around whether it was Smiths or Rolex on the wrists of Hillary and Norgay when they summited Everest I guess we’ll never know for sure really.

Nice to see a Russian watch. I own several vintage Soviet watches because they are relatively cheap to collect and so evocative. Nice to see that some brands are still going strong. Raketa is also one I think.

Got news for you Jodi. First watches in space was Pobeda. In same year 61 but before Gagarin. Those watches was in space on the wrist of a dog called Schernushka. U can easily check it from the book "Animals in space" by Colin Burgess n Chris Dubbs. Pobeda watches made by brand and factory known today as Raketa which is 300 years old and still to this date produces russian manufactured watches.

I just purchased 5 Vostok. According to my alternate reality Gagarin would have proud. Great Review J.

Graduates of the prestigious Orenberg Flight School were presented with Pobeda (means victory) Sturmanskie watches when they joined the Soviet Air Force. Yuri Alexeevitch Gagarin was presented with his watch on graduation in 1957. He wore the watch when he became the USSR’s first cosmonaut in space 12 April 1961. Gagarin’s Rodina was sold at Sotheby’s New York, Space Exploration Auction (N06516) 1993, Lot 17, $25,875 - and was described as having been worn during the flight of Vostock 1. This seems to be the cause of the confusion. But, the letter of attribution (in Russian) - states; ‘Wrist watch “Rodina”, which was given to Yuri A. Gagarin as a gift from the Commander of the Airforces, Marshal Vershinin AFTER the glorious flight of spaceship Vostok -1 The Rodina, an automatic, was considered a better watch than the Sturmanskie. According to family members, Yuri Gagarin wore the watch most of the time, though not, obviously, into space. When he crashed his MiG Gagarin was probably wearing a Strela / Poljot military issue chronograph but that is speculation on my part based on Alexei Leonov - who was originally scheduled to test the MiG - can be seen wearing a Strela in photographs taken in the 1960s. The Strela, issued to top Soviet military, is a much better watch than the Rodina.

I have no idea what is in the case, it's supposed to be manual wind as the original was but I swear I can feel a rotor. A watch shouldn't run for 2 days on 10 winds but this one did... doesn't matter because REGARDLESS, I love the watch, it keeps good time and I always catch myself gawking at it. It's a nice addition to my growing collection of Russian watches.

I love this watch, I saw the version with the bracelet and I fell in love with it. But Jesus is overpriced. You can get the Bulova Lunar Pilot for that price. Trivia: The Gagarin watch was the first watch worn _by a man_ in space. But the first watch in the space was another little cute Russian, the beloved Poveda "wristwatch of the people". It's well documented now that a model Pobeda 34-K (AKA "Chernushka" or "Blackie") was attached to the leg of a dog they used in the Sputnik 9, one of the experimental flights preparing the things for a man. The watch it's like the Pobeda we all know, with the variation of printed numbers in the seconds subdial and a screw-down back with a rubber gasket to improve the dust protection. Not as the poor pioneer, Laika, Chernushka (Blackie) came back because this time it was part of the goals of the mission, and so did the little Pobeda 34-K. So, owners of a little Russian Pobeda, I'm sure there are few here, you have the very first watch in space!

About the first watch in space, I read there was a watch sent into space with one of the dogs they sent up prior to Yuri Gagarin, so Gagarin’s watch was the first watch in space worn by a human. About the watch you are presenting, i have a 3747477, it looks about the same as yours but the case is titanium, the crown isn’t shiny and the back isn’t shiny as well.

I saw Yuri Gagarin in Manchester UK in July 1961. He travelled in an open topped car from the city centre to Manchester Airport. Unfortunately I don't recall which watch he was wearing.

I have exactly the same but with Auto movement, and they are gorgeous! Plus for me as Russian origin that watches the gift from my mother and mean a lot to me. Unfortunately receiving them from Russia was a bit drama, as Russian post successfully lost the parcel and find it only 10 months later after countless complains. The parcel delivered by Australia Post was re-packed, and soaking wet, and it seems it was soaking for the whole 10 months as everything inside the parcel turned to the sticky goo including watch box, and watch strap. The watch themself survived though despite being only 30m water resistant. I still had to unscrew them and dry out, as they quickly started accumulating fog while being heated by my wrist, however after careful clean, and putting them on nato strap they are running fine. Not +4s/day as yours but alright. Speaking about if Gagarin was actually wore Shturmanskie or not, the chances are, because Gagarin was a pilot at first place, and Shturmanskie was specifically created for soviet military pilots, and was hugely popular among them despite being a bit pricey.

Well we all seem to have an opinion what the first watch was :) I think it was the Strela. It would be the first watch worn in open space, outside a spaceship. The watch was branded as Poljot, Sekonda, or even simply Strela, and came in various designs and face colours. It is believed that Leonov wore a white faced Strela for his historic spacewalk. Issued in the 1950’s to Russian pilots, this became the watch issued to cosmonauts for 20 years, until it was retired in 1979. It is the Russian speedmaster!

Bought one of these about 3 years ago in stainless steel with a display case back showing the hand wind movement all in Russian text with green indices it is also numbered? Thinking the limited is just in each colourway, so limited but given how many versions not really....

I have just received the 60th anniversary commemorative edition of this for my birthday and now Jody questions the validity of the myth! No matter, it's a great edition only 60 numbered watches in titanium and 60 in bronze. I have a titanium with silver dial, saphire crystal, and the portrait of Gagarin on the case back is gold pvd coated. The strap is better quality leather and the buckle is signed. Also the box rivals anything Omega could come up with and includes a model of the Vostock rocket. I still believe!

I have an original @ 33mm,albeit with a new repro dial.As soon as I received it I checked the movement to be sure that it wasn't a franken jobby.It was ok with an original movement in good condition and didn't cost me more than sixty wee pounds................................................

Always want Shturmaskie but now it just a joke, not brand , sadly in Russia now only couple of original watch brands left - Vostok, Raketa, ZCHZ... Jody if you get a chance try Raketa watches with all in-house movement.

According to multiple sources this was the actual first watch in space - the very first watch in space! Pobeda 34-K. Strapped to the leg of Chernushka dog by Soviet aerospace medical researcher Dr. Abraham Genin, it made it to space and back on Sputnik-4 spacecraft on March 9th, 1961!

About £350 over here, totally cool for the story and style, pretty much all the Russian brands are doing some kind of anniversary edition with greater or lesser levels of authenticity. This very much reminds me of my Smiths Empire another pad printed 50's peice, in a world where people are paying £20gs for an £8 grand dive watch it looks like a bargain, I think they could have upped the WR and added a rotor but I suspect this is aimed at collectors more than wearers.
