Sanibel Island, Florida is known for its natural beauty and abundant fishing grounds. While most see the fishing community in Southwest Florida as a man’s world there was one woman who surpassed them all. Esperanza Woodring was born on Cayo Costa, a small island north of Sanibel, to a family known for their fishing prowess. She began fishing as soon as she could walk and married a Sanibel fisherman who also loved being on the water. They raised their family on Sanibel in a house that their son continues to live in today. After her husband’s death, Esperanza continued providing for her family and community through various jobs and responsibilities.
