Over the years, I've been bored and tried new things. Rock climbing was fun. I love hiking and backpacking. Mtn bike. Road bike. Weight lifting. I understand some people are specialized athletes. I'm just a normal person trying to be healthy
@MedievalSolutions

@lootom2673 cause the more you limit, the better you can be at the limited thing. That's why people specialize their skills, they find what they're most gifted for and then go as hard as they can for it. Like I specifically am aiming to be a hybrid athlete in terms of running endurance AND strength training, but I know I won't be immediately good at both, so I started specializing in strength, got to over 200Kg deadlift and squat and am slowly transitioning to running while maintaining strength.

The timing of this is wild! I just, in the last seven to ten days, started incorporating jogging, running, and jumping into my regimen, instead of just walking and hiking x amount of steps. Then, I was walking through the supermarket parking lot a couple days ago and thought I felt a pop in my knee. 👀 I was pretty freaked out, but didn't feel any pain, and I had a good leg day yesterday too, so I think I am good lol. But I will definitely keep the progress slow and steady and not try to get from 0-100 overnight! YOU ARE A LEGEND, EUGENE! Alec Blenis seems like an absolute beast as well; he seems to have been training that brain as hard as the rest of his body, like yourself. Big respect all around.

I usually don't comment, but this podcast was actually a bit of fresh air. The way Alec talks about training, how uncomplicated he goes about it and also his take about nutrition and this conspiracy bullshit with stuff like phytic acid was so great to listen to. In a time where every god damn "athlete" has a podcast and tries to go viral with some new dangerous food or nutrient, this was a pleasure to listen to. Also the way Eugene goes with it, the questions and everything - great discussion, thank you! Really shows how people should actually stop making things more complicated because some uneducated influencer promotes a certain split, exercise or food, because this stuff actually isn't as complicated as people tend to make it. :)

I truly enjoy this guys insight. Very simple to follow and if you research his advice they align well with evidence based research, Case and point the creatine phosphate utilization for recovery. Im 30 years old with 2 kids, 12 hr shift hospital job + Army Reserves. Training has changed over the years for me, BJJ is what I train for being a Purple Belt in BJJ has a lot of requirements for mobility work, explosiveness, cardiovascular endurance, strength, muscular fatigue build up. I run 3-4 times a week 1mile before workout and 1 mile at the end of the workout, sauna work, calisthenic HIIT based work, compound movements (No back squats Im a bitch), some transverse plane work with core focused movements. I do not stretch (some argue you should or shouldn't).

I think people are missing out on the value of dayhiking on trails. Its such a good way of building strength in your legs, get that volume in, move blood around, and theres all kinds of intensities, intervals and ways of using your legs while doing it (picking routes with uphill/downhill or going around the peaks etc.). If I feel like it, after having been out for 4-6 hours, I might jog my way back to the car because I know I can handle the load within this training week, and boredom of being out this long often coincide in some weird way with my fitness level -- if you are not bored, then its a bit too hard. Other times I just go out for a 1 hour jog, but those really really long hikes is a whole other beast. I even branched out to doing one marathon a day and starting to see how many I can do consecutively.

Mild injuries are a natural part of pushing yourself in any sort of exercise. Even when you do everything right, if you're training for a race and trying to progress, nagging injuries are an inevitability as you build mileage and intensity. Same goes for lifting in the gym. Eventually something is going to hurt a little. You take the time off and treat it with respect. Do what you need to do to heal and then watch out for it the next time.

I would had added that no, my zone two training is way different than the new runners given them being unconditioned. When the heart is stronger and more efficient, it takes less effort to run faster paces. Short version: a conditioned runner can run faster with a lot less effort than you. Another shorter version. Their zone 2 is faster paced than yours.

Notice he's not exactly super-jacked. He's decently jacked & shredded, but nothing extraordinary/elite. Which is another example/evidence of hypertrophy training being quite different from strength & endurance training. The former (when aimed at elite levels) is a stupid, useless, mainly/purely aesthetic goal, while the latter are admirable useful & even health-promoting (if done within reasonable limits; not aiming for extremes/uber-elite levels) goals...! P.S.: For all his achievements & high level accomplishments, he's humble AF!!

What’s this concept of recreating awkward life/functional movement in the gym? Are you not more likely to hurt yourself in the gym? Because you going to “progressively overload” jumping off one leg to catch a medicine ball out the air to “recreate” catching your baby if they fall?
@virding232
@virding232 Ай бұрын
What you're describing there are the typical sort of gimmick lifts that bad coaches invent and pass off as "functional"; you take an otherwise good lift and introduce a bunch of nonsense to make it unstable. Of course that is a lot more dangerous simply from the risk of slipping, but it also hampers strength and muscle gains as your body won't allow you to maximize force output without stability. What Alec is talking about here is different. He's talking about simply training all your muscles, all your movement patterns, within all ranges of motion. A great example would be the jefferson curl. Flexion is a core function of the spine, it is literally designed to bend, yet the prevailing attitude of the fitness world is that bending your spine under load is inherently dangerous. Instead, what Alec does, and what we all ought, is train that function, with a proper, non-gimmicky barbell lift. Therefore, in situations, whether inside the gym or outside of it, where your spine goes into a flexed position, you now have the strength to handle it without injury or pain. You don't have to perfectly replicate all these scenarios from real life in the gym. Resistance training has a very general effect, that's what's so great about it. If you simply train your body and become bigger and stronger, without neglecting any aspects, you will already be equipped to handle any akward positions life throws at you.
