This video details the astonishing aeronautics chapter of the early 1930's, when the possibilities of airships that could carry planes was a reality. The USS Akron (1931-1933) and it's twin sister, USS Macon (1933-1935) harnessed the possibilities of this vision.

My Father was a Machinist Mate on the USS Shenandoah ZR-1 Airship. He was the last Crew Member alive. He was Honored at Lakehurst Naval Air Station by the US Navy for his service. The Navy gave him a Plague as the Navy band played the Navy Anthem. Pop passed away in 1986

At 14:34 That Wide-Stance, Trolly Mast at NAS Lakehurst was only used with the USS Akron. After her demise in 1933, it vanished. Then in 1934, when the USS Macon was briefly stationed there during her Test flights, a new Trolly Mast was used. That Mast can also be seen in 1936, used by the Hindenburg, during her 10 trips to Lakehurst - Frankfurt.

Thank you for all your research and time you invested in making these videos! I saw an exhibit of the Akron at the Cradle of Aviation museuem on Long Island and had to learn more.

Built by Good YearZeppelin Corp wich was owned by 75% share by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH in Friedrichshafen/Germany. Leading engineer had been Karl Arnstein.

3:20 .. I think the floorboard (or catwalk as it was also called) might have been broader than mentioned, closer to 8 inches or 200 mm. Judging from the film alone it seems broad enough to fit two shoes next to each other with ease.

I grew up in Sunnyvale and saw P-3s come in and out of Moffet for many years. Went to many airshow there too. I was sad to see yhe skin taken off Hanger1 for yhe last number of years.

Got to wonder had the Navy had stuck with airships (not blimps) how something like Pearl Harbor or better yet the Battle of the Atlantic might have played out. Imagine the Akron with radar. It would have been a huge menace to U-boats.

At 6:12. The Rainbow Bridge between Jefferson and Orange Counties, TX was built to have a clearance of over 170 feet so as to accommodate the Patoka's mooring mast and any other subsequent masts. The Patoka made a single trip up the Neches River to the Magnolia refinery in Beaumont never to make any subsequent trips. The newer Veterans Bridge clears the water at about 140 feet feet as does the Fish hook Bridge father down channel in Port Arthur.

Navy idiocy doomed both the Akron and the Macon. No life preservers on a US NAVY ship killed most of the Akron's crew. But the Akron and the Macon were both doomed by the Navy's demand to have line-of-sight from the main gondola to the rear one, weakening a ring near the tail. At least the Macon had life preservers.

Mistakes were made. But it's the basic zeppelin concept itself that was faulty. As was demonstrated in the end by these experiments.

Random(and possibly unrelated question: At what point in time(year) did electric motors become powerful enough to be considered over gasoline engiens?

depends on what the motor is used for.

electric engines where allways strong competitors of combustion engines. They where and are much more efficient, lesser turning parts and no vibrations than cumbustion engines. The drawback is that the energie has to be stored in heavy batteries. Back then in very heave lead batteries and still today in lesser but still heavy lithium batteries.

I do remember the Goodyear blimps in Akron Ohio. Also remember the soapbox derby in Akron. And all our mansions that we played in. Now they call it "flyover area. America used ro be innovative. Now it is a homeless druggwd out junkyard. What hapoened??😢
