Matthew shows you how to take apart 80's and 90's Ford electrical connectors that are labelled PUSH without breaking them!

Wow I didn't know that. I'm glad I saw this as I have to disconnect those on my car. Thanks again for the great information.

WOW!!! I have a 90s mazda that has the same fuckin connectors for obvious reasons. I had no idea. Thanks!

They really don’t look like they come apart by pressing down, but they do!

Great info seems like ford loves making people life difficult 😂😂

The connectors actually work pretty well when used as intended, BUT most people don't see how they work and use a screwdriver to pry them up and over instead of pushing down and pulling them apart, and they break. The fuel pump relay connector is another example of this style of connector in the harness, but there are many others.

Like always, great info. I had no idea and broke mine already but now I know for next time 😂

There are quite a few smaller plugs in the harness that work the same way, so always look for the “push” embossing!

Theyll still break iften even when you do it right. The plastic gets really brittle over the years due to the heat cycles in the engine bay. I had a 90 crown vic that had that issue all over the place. I just started using delphi connectors as replacements.

Harness connectors and wiring cuts are typically one of the most problematic areas of a Foxbody Mustang!

So it should say, push and pull for satisfaction.
@tecmotiondyno3 ай бұрын
Maybe it should. There are a lot of connectors like this on the Ford harness and they are frequently broken because guys can't believe that pushing down is the right way to release them.
@The_Wanderer...3 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's cool and all, but I've done that and broke it still. Sometimes things are just too far gone. Thankfully, they've gone away with that connector.

You don’t have to be rough with a 30 year old harness to break the connectors, but if you are it is a virtual guarantee!

Used to call them salt and pepper
@tecmotiondyno3 ай бұрын
For sure, I think that is the common name for these particular ones.

Dou! Guilty as charged.

When you look at most of these “push” connectors, it’s hard to believe that they actually work this way, so I don’t really see any shame in having done it wrong, but now you know the right way hopefully you will never break another one!

It’s never too late for some of the connectors in that harness at least!

Years of heat, oil & abuse if you look at the connectors wrong they brake! Push, pull, heat gun what ever if its old plastic good luck! Just think of the plastic heater connections that disintegrate and leak coolant, Plastic sucks!
@tecmotiondyno3 ай бұрын
They can sure get brittle, but abuse is the most common reason this type of “push to disconnect” connector is broken. There are lots of them inside too, like the fuel pump relay connector.

I am sure I have used a screwdriver on everyone of those type of connectors that I had to take apart.
@tecmotiondyno3 ай бұрын
I’m ashamed to say that once upon a time I did too. They really don’t look like they will come apart by pushing down, but that is the way.

just swap to a Holley Terminator X-Max like me and never need to fuck with those old shitty harnesses. 🗿

You are still going to have some of this stuff in the car, unless you rewire the lights and HVAC and everything else. The salt and pepper shakers are commonly broken, but this style of connector is throughout the whole harness.
