The Forgotten Americans: Why Did U.S. Media Ignore U.S. Virgin Islands Devastated by Irma?

democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm just over one week ago, knocking out electricity and running water, and cutting off communications with the outside world. Now, Governor Kenneth Mapp says the islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas are still nearly entirely without power. The hurricane also destroyed schools and the main hospital on Saint Thomas. The devastation was so extensive, it can be seen from space. Earlier this week, a U.S. military amphibious ship arrived on Saint Thomas ladened with equipment and supplies. The islands have also received emergency aid from residents of the nearby island of Puerto Rico, where volunteers banded together to collect supplies and transport them on dozens of ships. But while Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands days before it made landfall on the Florida Keys, the Virgin Islands have been largely forgotten in the wall-to-wall U.S. media coverage of the storm. And that omission is even more striking given that the U.S. Virgin Islands are in the midst of celebrating their centennial as U.S. territory. We speak with Saint Thomas native Tiphanie Yanique, award-winning poet and novelist. She’s an associate professor in the English Department at Wesleyan University and the author of the poetry collection "Wife" and the novel "Land of Love and Drowning."

I am from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and we are merely property of the United States; we cannot even vote for the President. If you're not from the major islands(ie Jamaica, Bahamas)that are huge tourist attractions, I'm quite certain few individuals can identify Caribbean islands. It was so infuriating listening to the news, as the Caribbean islands were brushed off regarding Hurricane Irma's trajectory. We were mentioned briefly , as though we were "pit stops" in route to the mainland. Most of my information post impact was obtained via social media, as little to no coverage was provided...I can't say I'm surprised unfortunately.

Kim/ I didn't know some of the Virgin Islands were owned by the United States, either. I wonder if we can start a petition, to give the islands citizens, the same constitutional rights that we have, here on the main land. I know our rights are always being violated, but at least it would be a start. Does anyone know how to draw up a petition? I for one, am willing to sign it.

This is so so true. I am from Antigua but I lived in St. Thomas for 5 years and I always say America does not care about the USVI. I think partly its because they cannot vote for the president like you said.

The same thing happened in 1989 when hurricane Hugo hit the US Virgin Islands -- primarily St. Croix. The news talked primarily about what Hugo did to Charleston and seemingly ignored what happened to St. Croix.

US Virgin Islands might seem tiny, but together with Puerto Rico and America's Caribbean territories, it's quite substantial, not to mention the tourist money that must pour into these islands. That they can be forgotten is pathetic!

Americans do care about the people in the virgin Islands, it's the media that can't get over their powerful force in America. I as an american am very sad to hear that ALL of the Caribbean have not received the same help that others have. We can't help some and just ignore others. Thank you Democracy Now for bringing this to the ears of those who can help

The Purerto Ricans are more numerous and vocal than the USVI. A lot of Puerto Ricans live in New York City where the major networks are located and some of them work for the networks, like Geraldo Rivera. So they got more attention. A lot of network news people have little or no knowledge of geography and the US history in the region. They think that the US ends in Florida.

At last the world is getting things done without major corporations. There will be more and more of this. Eventually, the billionaires of this earth will realize the things they've been hoarding is of no importance to many others. Stocks and bonds? It's all a virtual bubble they have been buying into, and that too, one day will blow its top off.

Also, they don't want these islands like Puerto Rico, Guam, USVI to have negotiating power in business contracts with the US. Right now the US can drag them into any self serving exploitative contract and bankrupt them. They can use the land as they see fit, not as the native residents who have to live with main lander decisions, see fit.

I never heard of the Virgin Islands until I was in my yearly twenties when I moved there for 6 months due to a work move. I could not believe that there was US territory I never learned about in school or no one ever talked about here in the US. I am a Californian. Maybe it is good in some ways that we do not speak of it much so that it keeps a low population rate. And Virgin Islands would experience all the bad things that places experience when humans populate an area like pollution and making the water dirty with liter etc.

This is a good example of the Current state of the US media, they only seem to want to report on things that are hot topic and politicly motivated, if they could make a scandle out of this then it would be a big story, so they can get more ratings, but this is more along the lines of human interest and concidered low viewer so it will be left lay. This is why I havent watched TV in years. My heart goes out to thoes affected by this tragedy. Be well.

It's easy for people who have never been through a natural disaster or any catastrophic event to ignore the tragic situations of other individuals in order to selfishly maintain their sense of comfort. Human negligence towards others, whether foreign or local, is a harsh reality. This just serves as proof of who the mainstream media and the corporations that control the order of global operations are really focused on showing any form of concern towards. It's definitely not towards us true natives of these Islands, but only the tourists and long term vacationers who's main residences are in the continental US. As a US Virgin Islander that now resides in the continental US, it has always been a underlying fact that natives are truly peasants in the eyes of every Continental American, no matter what race. We are on our own and always have been so forgive me if I don't seem surprised to witness this negligence. Even with all of this scrutiny, I am confident that we will recover only with the help of each other since this neglect is evident. Along with the hidden knowledge of our existence to many, there is also hidden strength within our people that shall always remain evident only to those who know better.

That's exactly right. The majority of the inhabitants are people of color, mainly black. The little reporting that did come out of mainstream news after Irma hit the Virgin Islands was focussed on the tourist getting out. It was absolutely disgusting. They knew the Islands were hit hard but focussed instead for days on the storm that was on its way to Florida. CNN and the rest of mainstream media were disgusting.

Yes.. It really is no secret why is there? Yet still, so many VI & PR people are so proud to call themselves US citizens but they seem to forget that they are people of color on US Territory. They are a few Caucasian that were born in the VI, but the Majority is of African Descent with Latino and indigenous peoples not far behind. So why would anyone with a halfway proper overstanding of Americas whitewashed history be surprised that there is no real coverage? And I'm glad her true thought slipped out... Cause PR & the VI are really just US colonies. And yes.. Respect to the Armed Forces but in truth,it is all protocol. The US Military employs loads of people and has many resources in its Caribbean territories and PR is at the center of it all.

The Island belonged to the slaves who displaced the native people who were almost all wiped out by the European conquerors. Once slavery was over and there was no more profit for them, they bounced, living the islands to the slaves, only reaching out once in a while to give small financial aid. These socialist make their situation worst by spending the aid they get on corrupt politicians and not on infrastructure, had they moved the old people to a safe storm shelter and been prepared knowing a storm was on the way the leaders and politicians in PR would look much better. What do the citizens of the USA get just more, more, more. Maybe the Mayor should be doing more, more, more clean up. Listen to the people of PR, their socialist government is the issue. Why Did U.S. Media Ignore U.S. Virgin Islands Devastate by Irma? Answer: The mother nature never comes to visit this island just one time. She will and will be there maybe in the next year. So why to rebuild? You chose that island because your like it then you have to take care off by yourselft.

As I read these comments, I'm very disappointed in peoples veiws. It's the government, it's the media, it's my color. Blah blah blah, wah, wah, wah! Be accountable for who you are. Make a difference and shut up. My wife is working in Saint Thomas and I'm going there to help. Aid is there, aid is continuing to come. The one's you should be whinning about are the ones who post garbage like this. Get up and help and shut up about no one helping!

Uh, Houston? Florida? St.John? St.Thomas? Puerto Rico? the Caribbean? The US had not dealt yet with the Houston DISASTER when this hurricane hit. The US does not have a staff of millions in FEMA which is largely made up of "on call" individuals who sit around and wait for the next disaster. I see a lot of really dumb comments here, and a lot of lies being told by the people in this video. How would any of you as elected officials dealt with all of these disasters one on top of the other. I will tell you, the priority will go to those on the mainland who actually pay taxes for services. St. John is almost a 4 hour plane ride from Atlanta...did they expect the Marines to land on these islands the next day? And those of you trying to racialize this are the most ignorant. I travel to St.John every summer and I see none of this ridiculous racism that the radical left in the US loves to speak of. This was pure overload to the system and logistics.
