November 1944. On the flooded isle of Walcheren, Zeeland, thousands of Allied soldiers are battling the German army. Three young lives become inextricably connected. My uncle was killed at Walcheren on 1 November 1944. He was a lieutenant in the South African Union Defence Force but was serving in the Royal Marine Commando forces that landed at Westkapelle. He was killed on the way into shore, apparently by artillery. Although I understand he has no grave as a result of the way he died in action, I have been pleased to find out he is commemorated on memorials on Walcheren Island. His name is on the roll of honour for the 41 Royal Marine Commando at Westkapelle and on the memorial at Domburg. It is good that this operation has been portrayed in a film, as it has often been overshadowed by other operations.

As a Canadian vet, I encourage anyone to visit Vimy Ridge and the Menin gate. The MG is breathtakingly beautiful. And when you get to the section that contains the Canadian names... you will walk, and walk... and walk. It's heartbreaking seeing how many Canadians lost their lives. Me being me, I went to local pubs to meet the locals. I sat down at the bar, ordered a beer. Within 10 minutes of the barmaid finding out I was Canadian, almost everyone else in the pub was sitting around me. We laughed, told stories, and nobody let me pay for a single thing. Barmaid even sent me on my way with a beautiful stein that I still drink out of, years later. God bless all the Canadians who served. My Grandfather fought in this battle. I often wondered if I would ever see the efforts of the Canadian Corps. portrayed as anything more than the junior partners in the Allied War effort. Thank you Netflix, and thank you to the filmmakers who are trying to illustrate an overlooked part of our history. We need more of this going forward. Much of the craziness in the world is due to people not knowing about history. It won’t cure us, but it might help us to make better decisions. We can hope.

My own grandfather, a Brit PBI, wasn't there but not far off. His later wife's (my grandmother) brother was also deployed in the area but on the other side. My step grandad's (grandmothers 2nd hubby) brother, a RN man, was involved in landing the troops to and around Walcheren, a job he also did on D-day. Small world I guess. Could do with more Brit in terms of good modern (post SPR) WW2 movies, as we don't get a lot despite plenty of epic actions aso. In recent times only one about a loss; Dunkirk, and an endless number of WW1 movies of varying quality (though 1917 was good) BUT I'll take one with our Canuck cousins as a good start.

David, Canadians were *never* a junior partner. Remember that Canada had the third largest navy in the world during WWII and it was the Canadian Navy escorting the convoys that kept Britain fed and delivered much needed war supplies that were manufactured by Canada. It was the Canadian sacrifice at Dieppe that save thousands and thousands of lives at Normandy due to the lessons learned at the cost of Canadian soldiers blood during that seemingly futile operation. Maybe I am biased because Canada has always been my favourite country after my own.

My great grandfather also fought in the Netherlands. He lead the paratroopers that took the Moerdijk bridges and after that fought in the battle to take Rotterdam. A week or so after occupying Rotterdam his close friend got killed by a Dutch resistance fighter, but instead of losing his temper he asked his men to secretly identify the assailant and follow his movements. This lead them to uncovering an entire cell of resistance fighters that was starting to take shape. My great grandfather got the German officers stage a fake, seemingly poorly defended, event in Rotterdam square that would lure the resistance fighters in cell the gather in one place (to prepare an ambush). In the early morning/night before the fake event they assaulted the building resistance fighters were gathered in, bringing down the entire building. In total 53 resistance fighters were killed or captured in one swoop and is said to have delayed/impacted the ability of any new resistance cells forming in Rotterdam for many months. Thanks to his actions many German lives were saved. Three days after he got promoted Sturmbannfuhrer (waffen ss) and served rest of the war away from battle, leading a team to sniff out spies and rebels, saving countless lives. My dad still has his medals and coat, which my great grandfather had to hide (as allies demanded all symbols to be destroyed). He is a legend in my home village and my family, I remember as a kid putting on his ss coat and running (charging) towards where I thought Netherlands was with a stick gun, of course at that time I didn’t understand that Netherlands was far away from Argentina (whenever we visited him).

This is an excellent film. There is a deep and abiding friendship between the people of Canada and the Netherlands from their shared WW2 experience. My mother, from Ottawa, was among the first employees of the UK’s NHS, traveling there with another nurse friend in 1949 to work as a nurse, staying three years. They traveled on the continent a bit. Pretty much everywhere in the Netherlands they went and stayed, the hotels, guest houses, restaurants, would not take their money, simply saying the bill has already been paid.

Its ok, the Dutch knew. They sent Canada brilliant and beautiful tulips for half a century as a thank you for allowing their Royalty to have a baby when we made the hospital officially Dutch land. The Dutch and the Canadians have had strong ties, including many marriages and families. We don't need the worlds recognition, we've been rewarded with the relationship with the Dutch for decades, and hopefully for decades more.

@@map8488 you don’t know the relationship between Canada and Netherlands? Maybe you should find out before making a comment, it’s especially relevant considering what the KZfaq video is about. Your complaint is colonialism? So that’s every country on the planet. But you’ve obviously made it personal to the Dutch. If you go back in time, every country has committed an atrocity on another country to benefit its people. You’ve just chosen to go to the time and with a country that suits your personal indignation. @@vectorbass9679 Dunkirk's biggest strong point was it's cinematography. Other than that I think it kinda falls apart due to Nolan's usual fettish with time rearing it's ugly head and the fact that none of the characters were very fleshed out. I get that the movie was trying to focus more on the event of Dunkirk rather than the characters trapped in the middle of it but the problem for me was, I already know allot about the event, so I knew how the event itself would end. The suspense could've been in that I didn't know the characters would survive. But I didn't care much about the characters so I wasn't biting my nails to see if they'd survive. Which made me really sad because I was more hyped for Dunkirk than I was for literally any other movie at the time.

I didn't get that one, why they said "The Dutch version of Dunkirk". How is this the Dutch version of that? That would imply a Allied retreat being stuck on a beach waiting to get pulled out. The stories are nothing alike. Who ever made that quote should go back to school and follow history lessons better. This movie is about the battle of the Schelde, quite a important battle as it opened up the doors into the country, thus allied forces could push towards Germany. In this movie you follow three different story lines that are connected. You follow a soldier, a civilian and a Dutch NSB'er (collaborators with the Germans, often send to the east front to fight) and their stories come together at the Schelde, it's quite interesting.

Like when Argo left us out completely, even though that was almost entirely Canada. After seeing the movie, Jimmy Carter (the President when the hostage crisis occurred) said that 90% of the ideas and execution of the plan were Canadian. He also pointed out that the hero wasn't Ben Affleck's character, who was only in Iran for 36h, but Ken Taylor, the Canadian ambassador who orchestrated the plan. That movie shits all over the Brits and New Zealanders too, claiming that they turned the US diplomats away when in reality they helped them. And then there's U-571, a movie about a submarine that was shot down by an Australian fighter in reality, but captured by the Americans in the movie. In the movie, they are capturing the first Enigma machine, which was instrumental in breaking the German code...except that Bletchley Park broke the code a year before this film takes place (watch The Imitation Game). Also, the Brits had already captured at least 3 Enigma machines by this point. Sadly, Hollywood feels they need to put the USA front and center in every movie, facts be damned, or Americans won't watch it. I don't know whether that's a sad indictment of Hollywood, or the typical American.

A whole lot of Europeans should be incredibly thankful for their efforts. This production looks like a must watch.

@@yusufobaidat4730 I'm very aware of what went on. Compared to what the Germans did, there is no comparison, for they were in a league of their own. Even the Soviets didn't come close. This movie was absolutely amazing. Outstanding. Also the part when marinus expires and the look on his face with them tears rolling down Both sides of his face is nothing but pure genius. The raw emotion on both teuntje and marinus's faces was acting at its best. Two thumbs up.. outstanding movie

After literally just finishing the movie.... I can confidently say it was pretty good. If you go into it thinking it’s going to be like SPR then rethink your approach. It branches from the views of the German soldier, a zeeland native and an American. The ending was a bit of a let down but not horrible. But it did a good job of showing why the characters changed and acted the way they did.

@@TheCoolCucumber the story focuses on the lives of three main characters: 2 Dutch and 1 British. This is an original story and could have told the story of anyone including a Canadian soldier. Instead, Canadians are represented just as “soldiers” rather than as characters worthy of treatment as a hero or anti-hero. In other words, the producers considered how to sell the story and decided telling the story of a Canadian in the liberation of Holland was too boring so let’s just trot out the Brit again.
