At the invitation of rebel barons, Louis the Dauphine of France, son of Philip II, invaded England in 1216 with a powerful army of knights.
King John and the greatest knight in history William the Marshal battle against Louis to save the kingdom.
It's remarkable how close the French came to conquering the Kingdom of England.

Not being a show off by saying that I have a PhD In medieval history but I can honestly say that your video was one of the clearest and most concise I have seen on this period of history. Loved every minute and wished it ran for much much longer. Get some more done, soon. Please cover the guerrilla war in Kent, the siege of Dover and the Battle of Lincoln. A brilliant gold star production.

I could happily talk for hours about this era and intend to start doing live streams this year which is simpler and less time intensive that a produced video like this. Interestingly there were English elements with Harald Hadrada in his 1066 invasion - notable Harold's brother Tostig. That whole "North Sea civilisation" period was pretty incestuous. The Normans, Danes, Norwegians, Engish, even the Scots and Irish were so intertwined.

I agree, it's interesting to consider isn't it. England has had many kings from the lands around the North Sea and the essential character of the English people continued despite the cultural influences from a small foreign ruling elite. The Normans had the largest impact. The Danish "Emperor of the North Sea" King Cnut and his sons before the Normans of course. The first Stuart was foreign of course. William III, George I... Being part of the wider, ascendant Kingdom of France would have changed things more, I would imagine. France was already becoming the most powerful force in Christendom, with the resources of England too... But maybe they wouldn't have held it long. Belligerent lords could have overthrown their king while he was occupied elsewhere across the Channel perhaps and installed one of their own. Amazing to consider that this great branching of history might have been stopped by the efforts of an impoverished squire in the wilds of Kent.

Recently visted my cousins in Guernsey in 2019 before the plague hit, and King John is remembered very differently there than in my home state of Massachusetts. I had no idea that William Marshall had to wage such a campaign to oust Louis! Everything I've seen just glosses this over implying that once John died all Henry III and Marshall had to do was re-issue Magna Carta (with some edits) and the Barons all switched back to their side and Louis peacefully returned to France. Great video, I can't wait to watch your other videos!

@georgebailey8179
@georgebailey8179 4 ай бұрын
It's easy to decide that every decision the losing side took in a battle or war was wrong. But I think Godwinson was right in that case. Rushing north to Stamford Bridge had worked out wonderfully for him, and he didn't want the Normans to establish themselves in his kingdom. He had to show he was a king who protected his people and lands.

William the marshal was amazing you know at the battle of Lincoln he killed the enemy general in hand-to-hand combat even though he was over 80
@DanDavisHistory
@DanDavisHistory 3 жыл бұрын
He was amazing. He was probably about 71 at the Battle of Lincoln and yeah he was in the front line of the charge which is glorious beyond belief. Check it out, from the Life of William Marshal about the slaying of the Count of Perche, the enemy commander at Lincoln: "the Count had already taken a mortal wound from a sword, thrust in a fearful lunge through his visor by Sir Reginald Croc; and now, as he saw our forces driving his men back, he let go of his reins and gripped his sword in both hands; then William the Marshal dealt him three successive blows upon the helm, so fierce and strong that they left clear marks upon it, whereupon the count collapsed and went tumbling from his horse. Seeing him fall, the Earl Marshal thought he’d lost consciousness and feared he’d be held to blame. He said to William de Montigny: "Dismount and take off his helm - it’s giving him trouble: I fear he can’t stand up." When the helmet was removed and the Marshal, at his side, saw that he was stone-cold dead, there was much consternation; but from the moment the blade had been pulled from the wound dealt through his visor, his death had been inevitable. It was a grievous pity that he died so." It's funny because the author, presumably under direction, has tried to absolve the Marshal of the blame of killing rather than capturing the Count of Perche. "Someone else killed him first, all the Marshal did was crack him over the skull with his sword three times hard enough to dent his helm, just a few taps really." Lol

No you are Not! You last name would be Marshal than! You are a Brown, a random mishmash of people that all lost their names and identities and were ruled by Clan Brown and had to change your last name to Brown! Fact is almost all Browns were not related to the Clan Chief! I am sure that is who you are trying to Trace your Ancestry through! And most likely even he was lying about his Ancestry, like most Low Land Chiefs! A Chief also being a Royal was Rare! Like my direct Ancestor the once War Masters of Scotland the Chiefs of the Great Clan Ross, the Earls of Ross, 1st which being Fearchar the Son of the Priest! Ross is a Pedigree, all Ross' that could not prove their Pedigree by Paperwork became Mackenzies ruled by the Earl of Ross' Cousins the Makenzie Chiefs (our Evil Twins). The 1st Stuart King 2nd wife was a Queen Consort Ross who's children the Royal Bloodline Settled on. Ross' were the Original Highlanders, we were Clan Arias (Anrias) in the Past, and are a Scythina Clan as laid out in the Declaration of Arbroath who a Chief of Ross the Earl of Ross was 4th to Sign (this was right after the advents in the Braveheart Movie, with Ross-shire being decimated for hiding the Queen, and the Earldom of Ross went from 10,000 Fighting men down to 2,000, and the War Master (of Scotland) and Chief the Earl of Ross captured and brought to the Tower of London, and was released on the Condition his Son needed to marry the English Kings Sister Princes Maud! and I probably should research if that was the 4th Earl of Ross' Mother, the 1st to take on the Surname Ross, the Chief of Ross, the 4th Earl of Ross, Hugh Ross, and the last real Earl of Ross, till the Title went to the Stuarts! and maybe that or something else like it, was what related the English Crown to the Scottish and why the Scottish Crown became the English Crown, with maybe quite a few cross overs making that the best Choice for the English). See what happened here is after two highland Clearances and the Destruction of many of the Original Clans, the Scoti Clans that were Scythian Clans from Royal Scythia (with the Scoti Royalty coming from a Bloodline of Scythian Kings), after we were kicked out and mostly destroyed and basically outlowed, the Low Landers that did it with the English decided you fancies our Culture barely a generation later, and came up with your own Coat of Arms, and your Chiefs came up with these Fancy Stories of your pasts that weren't true, but to try to rival the real Clan Chiefs they Ran Out for the Better Part! And you came up with Crests you never had before, and your own Colors you mostly barely had before, and these Tales your Chiefs were Descendants of Kings which were Generally not True! And you could only do this, because you Destroyed not just Highland Culture, but wiped us out after two highland clearances! And than you stole our Culture! You are a Brown, not a Marshall! You have no clue what your Past was, unless you are daring to say you are directly related to your Clan Chief, as all Browns and the Sort Pretend, but that would no different than a Mackenzie demanding they are related to the Ross' cousins the Chief of the Mackenzies (an Earl now I think, or atleast one of them) just because their name is Mackenzie, but that is not how it worked, for Clans like the Mackenzies or Browns, everyone they Conquered lost their Indentities and became Browns or Mackenzies! Only the Orginal Clans, the Scoti Clans that came from Royal Scythia were Clans of Pedigrees! Clan Ross is the Gentry from the Great Clan Ross, and the Great Clan Ross was Clan Arias before the War Master and Chief the 1st of Ross Fearchar the Son of the Priest, who with his Great Armada and Great Army of Ross with his Cousin the Kings Troops kicked all the Viking Lairds out of Scotland, and Stole their Lands and Gold, Greatly Expanding the Earldom of Ross (from the ashes of the Mormaerdom of Ross) and making who would be known as the Ross' the Richest and Most Powerful Family in the Highlands for some Generations! I think its a Nasty thing to do, do two highland clearances and than steal the Culture of the Highlanders! You weren't Clans, you were Thugs, Ruled by Thugs!

One of the most devastating Scottish invasions was in the English Civil War when the Scots army linked up with the Parliamentarians to defeat the Royalists at Marston Moor. Great video, I knew the invasion took place but had no idea about the ins and out, especially the guerrilla warfare in Kent, really interesting. As an aside, why were medieval armies so small compared to Ancient ones? The high middle ages aren't really a period I'm that clued in on but whenever I see battle sizes compared to ones a thousand or so previously they're almost always much smaller, how come?
@DanDavisHistory
@DanDavisHistory 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you liked it. Yeah it's a very different style of warfare. I think it's to do with the social organisation. In the ancient world you had either sophisticated centralised states that had the logistics to organise vast armies or you had barbarian cultures with a flatter social structure (all free men are warriors) that occasionally massed into huge hordes. The medieval era tended to have much smaller states with semi-independent rulers so the units of social organisation were smaller geographically and demographically. And more resources were focused on individual knights and men at arms. His armour and training and the money to equip him with expensive well trained horses and the supporting men to keep this knight "unit" going. So the number on the page might say 1,000 knights and on the ground that is many thousands of men plus thousands of horses. Good idea for a video!

We were taught that once King John was dead. The English told the French to leave and they did. Thank you for uploading this video. I always thought there had to be more to the story than what we had been taught. I see now that I was right once again.....believe me I'm no genius I just have common sense.

Thank God for William of Cassingham! Without his heroics, that of William Marshal and Hubert de Burgh saved England and the rest of the British Isles from becoming part of France. French would have been reinforced as the language of choice and all traces of Saxon, Celtic and Norse identity would have become French. Great series of videos on this forgotten history that was vital to the saving of England. I also really like your novels! Keep up the brilliant work! Cheers from the USA!

@DanDavisHistory
@DanDavisHistory 3 жыл бұрын
Before he invaded he was advised to obtain an "invitation" from some British faction. He assembled a huge army. 250 carrier ships and 60 fishing boats carried 35,000 men, including 11,000 foot soldiers and 4,000 cavalry. Upon landing the king's forces began to run away or changes sides and the king fled. It was an invasion, just a highly successful one.

A superb video on about 1/10,000 the budget of the wretched efforts of the BBC and other channels to make history programmes, who prefer to have young women 'history professors' slagging off the English and saying every victory (such as the Armada) was won 'by luck', and thinking the video is all about them dressing up in the ladies' dresses of the period & posing whilst also being extreme feminists.

The only reason this war happened was because France conquered Normandy and poitou from England and decisively defeated the Anglo-holy roman coalition at the battle of Bouvines.
