Hell yeah man! Nightmare Land is such an underrated gem! I imagine many people never heard it because it was tough to actually make it that far in the game, haha.

They definitely did choose to license some bizarre properties, but in their defense I think a lot of people expected big things out of the Little Nemo movie.

@@RewindArcade 2:19: Funny enough, there was a 1984 pilot that was done by the Ghibli animation team, as certain animation shots were later reused for Porco Rosso. The designs for Nemo and Omen (who is actually Slivers from the comics given a facelift) are very reminiscent of 1950s Disney films, where the human character designs are rotoscoped, but still fits into the world they represent. In the case of Nemo's 1984 pilot design, it resembles more of McCay's design than the one TMS went with. There's even concept art for the art direction at the time, with 4 other characters being given a similar treatment (and also looking more like McCay's artstyle); those four characters being Doctor Pill, Princess Camille, Flip the Clown, and Nemo's Father. The Princess concept art shows a bit of the Disney resemblance I mentioned earlier, specifically the doodles of Alice, Tinkerbell and Princess Aurora. A sidenote to the finalized Nemo design in the film is that it looks less like Nemo and resembles more like Buddy from Looney Tunes (specifically his debut appearance in "Buddy's Day Out"); ironically, TMS would later be involved in animating episodes of Animaniacs, with one of them being a TV Special that actually features the return of Buddy (albiet in his design lifted from "Buddy's Beer Garden").

@@RewindArcade Which is ironic, considering that the Nemo movie chose to scrap the Human like qualities in design that Little Nemo was known for (look at the Sadao Tsukioka and Kondo Yoshifumi pilots for the artstyle), in favor of turning Nemo into a Looney Tune (look at TMS Animaniacs episodes for an example).

Oh wow, I had no idea there were animated pilots out there with an art style that more closely resembled the original comic strip! That is really interesting and I plan to watch them in full later. Thanks for sharing!

The reference was actually based on the Little Nemo comic strip as the animated movie didn’t come out for another 2 years after Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Still pretty cool though! 👍

I’m definitely looking forward to the Netflix adaptation and also found out today that there is a developer working on a new Nemo video game inspired by the artwork from the original comic strip.

Agreed, there’s a lot of cool arcade games they made that never got ported anywhere. The Little Nemo comic is public domain, but the movie the game is based on sadly, is not.

You’re right, that’s something I absolutely should have mentioned. It’s been a while since I made this video so I can’t quite remember why I cut that fact, but the script on this one was definitely rushed since that was back when I was trying to appease the almighty KZfaq algorithm by releasing content fast. Yup, really cool to see the IP being used by a bunch of people to make new games! I'm pretty sure Chris Totten, the creator of "Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends" is actually commented on this too, haha. This video unfortunately came out before either of the Kickstarters were announced, but I'm thinking about doing a more comprehensive video later after they both come out and including the NES game too.

I think because it’s a little bit of a touchy subject. In fact, quite a few of the old Little Nemo comics have some pretty questionable racial portrayals. I actually decided to cut a few things from this video because I didn’t think they’d be received well.

@@RewindArcade fair, its best to avoid pitch forks and torches when you can, I just always find it odd that nobody ever notices, I can't vouge for youtubers knowing and avoiding bringing it up, but anybody I've known who plays these games and/or saw the movie, I mention this and they always do a double take and clearly never noticed before so I always found if odd how actual blackface got a pass yet Mr Popo from DBZ is a problem XD
