I haven't played many shoot 'em ups, but I did play Gaiares emulated when I went through a phase of (re)playing mega drive (genesis) games via Kega fusion. I think I tried the game due to its unusual title and got drawn in by the initial stage music and weapon stealing mechanic. The difficulty kept me coming back, though I was certainly stuck for a long time on mission 5 (the number of things to dodge with the icebergs and fireballs) and the bosses of missions 5 and 6 were pretty damn brutal. but after numerous attempts I kept going further. Felt pretty good to finally finish it. I find it amusing to learn the reason for the game's difficulty - I had assumed shmup players were just all seasoned genre veterans by the time the game was released (which I guess may often have been the case) so I'm kind of surprised to read some players never finished it

That’s awesome you finally saw it through to the end! This game is definitely pretty mean even early on. During the late 80a/early 90s there were a lot of shmups that cranked up the difficulty so much they became notorious for it (Gradius III arcade is a big one) since shmup players were becoming so skilled.

Man… We need a new Star Fox game for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 would be amazing!!

Honestly, Nintendo needs to revisit their approach with Star Fox Assault. It took the story in an interesting new direction, and while the on-foot segments were divisive and ultimately arguably a failed experiment, the more traditional gameplay segments were fantastic. It says something when one of the worst things you usually hear about the game is that it was too short. Their insistence on "experimenting" with the gameplay backfires more often than not. Adventures was a completely different Genre that clashed horribly with the series identity, and people resented the Star Fox elements for overtaking and overpowering the more interesting Dinosaur Planet story beats. Command... simply read like bad fanfiction, and had repetitive gameplay with no variety, and it having multiple endings that nearly all seemed to want to be a finale for the series in general did nothing to win over fans of the series. And then Zero... Zero could have been _fantastic._ The Wii U killed Star Fox Zero, and I cannot think of any other way to say it that captures what happened so succinctly. Everything else about it was great, even if it was another retelling of the Lylat War.

1:02:02 wow i wonder who that couldve been, fr though we all know that typa spammed and repeated rhetoric only comes from news journo sites like IGN or kotaku. the journos that work there would rather take a dump on everything that's been done right in history and in terms of games while praising stuff like the one button movie games as revolutionary titles. they also seems to have a hater boner for games like cuphead or from soft games with their latest hit piece being about how they are so whiny they cant beat the game to access the DLC. cuz god forbid a game journo does their job right

Great video! I've always loved actraiser 1 and 2 since i was a young child. I absolutely loved Renaissance and shed tears when i first booted it up. Unfortunately since its release i havent put the time into a second playthrough of it and thats because my first playthrough of it being about 20 hours long. Thats a pretty massive difference compared to the first games 1-3 hour playthrough.

Regarding the WiiU, worse, everyone I knew, including myself, thought it was nothing more then an addition to the Wii, a console we where kind of done with, as such we where not interested in the WiiU as we wanted a new console instead of a addition to the old Wii, ironically it was a new console, in that regard the name and marketing was just bad imo, which caused this confusion of it being a regular Wii addition not a new console. I got a WiiU quite a while after it's death, and tbh, I think it was not a bad console, it had more potential, and I honestly like it more then I did the original Wii, the original Wii to me was more a console for causal party games like Wii Sports, for more serious games so far as it had them I did not enjoy the motion controls at all.

When Yoshiki Okamoto was told to create a racing game for Konami he instead worked in secrecy on Gyruss. He prepped up a "dummy" to show off progression to his boss. Then the day came where he had to come clean and his boss was not amused at all but the STG got released anyway. Now after Gyruss quickly became a success his superior took credit by telling his own boss it was his idea. Okamoto overheard that and was of course sad about that. I think there was another instance (before or after that) with the excat same outcome. That's when Okamoto decided to leave Konami and go to Capcom. He never made a fuss about it. Many years later he was struggling on something. He got laughed at by some colleagues in the industry for that. Fast forward, he made billions with Monster Strike. Again, he never backlashed on those who laughed him off. He showed class! Although he was rich while those struggling with their projects. Let that sink in. When I became aware of that he was one of the two planners of one of my favourite platformers, SonSon2, I thanked him on his official channel for that game and that I still own it as someone living in Germany. He actually answered me from his private channel that he was very glad to hear that I like SonSon2 so much. Needless to say that I was awestruck and losfer words. I couldn't believe that he took his time to answer me.

In Wonderboy in Monsterland they call a gladius a gradius, and gladius and gradius are spelled the same in katakana so I'm pretty sure that is where the word comes from, regardless if they said there was a planet called gradius or not.

I was curious to hear more about the Genesis version of ghouls and ghosts, because I know Sega programmed it and was just licensed by Capcom but I wonder how much cooperation there actually was between Capcom and Sega in the development process. Also I know that's a lot of people's favorite and it's fairly cheap on eBay

Yeah, I was trying to keep the video at a fairly manageable length so I didn't get too much into the console ports, but I know Yuji Naka personally handled the programming for the Genesis/Mega Drive Ghouls 'n Ghosts and did it in a very impressive timespan. Fujiwara was laughing about the port because it was done faithfully that it even included many of the same bugs the arcade version had, haha.

I recently had a theory about the original ending in the first game where Pit becomes an “adult” and a budding romance develops with Palutena. The scoring system determines the ending which focuses on Pits experience and inner growth through his battles, but in my theory, I noticed that none of the other “centurions” you rescue are any bigger that pit himself, implying that all angels in this universe are but children who do not possess the ability to age and grow as humans do, thus, despite their bravery, valor and experiences in many battles, these soldiers also remain but children. Pit’s struggle to accomplish feats that no other centurion was capable of separated him from these brave warriors and in the end, his efforts gave way to a new path. You see, pit doesnt grow up to become a man if you get the best ending; he ascends to godhood, thus, winning the heart of the goddess Palutena, sadly, and ending that was never futher emphasized on in future games where he retains his “child” state.

You forgot to mention that "Vic" is also a shortcut for "Victoria", as second player is mentioned as Lord British. It is can also be recalled in the Intro of every level in Gradius, in musical fare. There is a part of the song seems inspired by the style often heard in British musicals... I was in denial for many years, but I can truly sense the British influence at the second phrase of the intro tune once you enter a new level. Seems that the empire that owns the Victoria Viper has it's origins British! That gives me a very strong remarkable thrill while I think about it!!! ^_^'
