The Greatest Year that Never Was...
Most people say Tiger's Prime was from 1999-2002 where he won the Tiger Slam and did just about everything, but I don't think it's so clear. From 2005 - 2007 he went on a streak that was very nearly the single greatest achievement in golf history.

People can debate the conversation of "greatest golfer of all time," but there is no debate that no person has or likely ever will play golf better than Tiger did between the end of 1999 through 2002. He was unstoppable and playing in a league of his own.

2005-2008 Tiger was arguably even better than 1999-2002 Tiger. He won 45% of his starts, finished in the top three 2/3rds of the time in this period with 6 majors. Often times the putter let him down (2005 and 2007 US Opens and 2006 Masters) but his iron play was probably the best we’ve ever seen.

Not even remotely close. Tiger won 9 times in 2000 and 4 majors in a row plus winning the us open in 2000 at pebble beach by 15 shots. It's the greatest stretch of golf ever played by anybody. Had he left his swing alone he would have possibly 25 majors by now and over 100 tour events...not even joking a little bit. It shows how great he was that he was able to foolishly change his swing and still dominate but nothing would ever touch what he did in the 2000 era.

@@joeldriver-sp2rg I think a part of the reason he had those bigger major margins of victory was the driver technology hadn’t advanced by then to where it was a few years later, plus he was using the solid core golf ball earlier than most others. Tiger won 8 times in 2006 and 7 times in 2007, he probably would have won all the remaining majors in 2008 if it wasn’t for his knee. My main point was that he was more consistent in the 2005-2008 stretch. He only finished outside of the top 12 of one major in that stretch, which was the missed cut at Winged Foot after his father’s death.

By 2006, Phil Mickelson was really starting to climb up the ladder in major victories having just won the '05 PGA Championship and '06 Masters and on the brink of winning his 1st US Open in '06 at Winged Foot, but losing it on the last hole to Geoff Ogilvy. Mickelson would have won 3 majors in a row and had 4 majors total if he had won that '06 US Open. He would have had 4 majors to Tiger's 10 and also Mickelson could have equaled Tiger's 4-majors-in-a-row feat at The Open with his own Mickel Slam, which would have put him at 5 majors total only halfway to Tiger's total. But instead with the Mickelson not winning the US Open and staying at 2-in-a-row and 3 total majors won and Tiger winning the '06 Open and PGA Championships to end the year, it put Tiger at 12 major victories by the end of '06. That slammed the door on Mickelson ever coming close to Tiger in majors won. History could have looked a lot different if Mickelson wins that '06 US Open.

I love mickelson as much as anyone else but Mickelson was Mickelsons toughest opponent he had countless tournaments and a few majors in the bag and he stopped playing golf and started thinking which was his downfall every time. Sometimes it looked like he tried to lose to prove a point that he could’ve won he just didn’t want to. That was tigers and mickelsons biggest difference when it’s the back 9 on Sunday tiger can’t be rattled most of the time but of mickelson has one question about his swing or one little thing breaks the wrong way he couldn’t get past it and make it up on the next hole like tiger did.

surprised you left out the first half of 08 from this too. won 4 out of 6 tournaments, with a T2 at Masters and 1st and US Open. worst finish was 5th at WGC. If he didnt need the surgery after US Open it could have been a better year than 99-00.

He did pretty poorly at the 2007 Open I think. That kind of messed up the flow of the argument but yeah he was INSANE in 2008 as well up to the point he tore his Achilles and busted his knee in the US Open

@@RoluGolf 12th in that one, which is really not too shabby. 2007 Bridgestone through 2008 US Open is probably the best sustained run in his career: 10/13 wins and his other finishes 2nd, 2nd, 5th. Crazy. I just finished the video, I see what you did that's a fair cutoff. Still, after those 10 he finished 5 back, won, 3 back, won.

That was the greatest era of any golfer in history and had he left his swing alone that Butch Harmon helped him with he would have over 25 majors and 100 tour events. It's the greatest golf swing in history. I still can't believe he changed it. Jack, Arnold, Hogan, etc. never changed their swing once they mastered it. I understand always wanting to improve but he had perfection and should have left it alone.

Tiger being "0 for 10 in majors from 2002-2004" is just deception to viewers at best. He won the Masters and USO in 2002 (his most underrated USO win in my opinion) and if not for an 81 in the 3rd round of the Open Championship (played in a gale force rainstorm), he would've likely won there. And was barely edged out at the PGA by a single stroke by Rich Beem

Allegedly, yeah I think it was. It's hard to get a concrete time line but some of the women say they started seeing him in 2006 I believe.
