The forgotten Tudor queen, Lady Jane Grey, only reigned for 13 short days, and was never formally crowned (despite her epithet as the '9-day-queen'). But what do we really know about her life? Was Jane really the innocent pawn history has portrayed her as, or did she have ambitions of her own for the crown? This video looks at the aftermath of Jane becoming a prisoner in the Tower of London, and Mary I becoming queen of England. Did Jane go quietly, or did she see herself as a Protestant martyr? And what led to Mary declaring a death sentence for Jane and her husband?

I learned so much about Jane Grey. I only knew her as a pawn of the powerful men around her. It is quite sad how she was literally abandoned after it was clear Mary was going to be Queen. It is interesting that Mary wanted to show mercy to her.

It really is - I think if Jane had done what her mother did and paid lip service to being Catholic, she would almost certainly have lived. But it's definitely the difference between her parents who become Protestant as opposed to Jane who was brought up as Protestant from birth. I guess it does shows such bravery and conviction in her faith, but I have to admit that I don't think I could have done the same.

This three part series on Jane has been so enlightening. Everything that I've read about Jane Grey was she was reluctant and headstrong. I got the feeling that she really didn't love Guilford Dudley even after being forced to marry him. I have often wondered what her reign would have been liked if she had survived and she had been queen rather than her cousins Mary and Elizabeth. She was a pawn. She was not a pushover that I have been led to believe.

It was lovely for me to find out she wasn't a pushover too - it's all research that's been carried out in the last 20 years or so, mostly by female historians (with the exception of the fantastic Eric Ives), just by taking another look over some new evidence and evidence that was overlooked. The popular story of Jane Grey began being created with Roger Ascham, continued on with the English Civil War, and then was romanticised further by Victorian historians! (They're responsible for a lot of popular history that isn't quite the full story! 😆)

So much was explained/cleared in this telling than what was said prior! Thank you. So, Jane wasn't madly in love w Guilford as we came to believe. Mary was compassionate towards her female kin and with the intention to spare them whereas Elizabeth came to fear them in protection of her throne/crown and made their lives a misery! People never thought well of Robert Dudley because of his father, the Earl of Northumberland, an enemy of Mary's. Elizabeth however, felt quite differently! Wow! A truer telling of events have been revealed! Can't thank you enough! ❤

This three part series is so enlightening. Everything I’ve ever heard or read about Jane Grey was that she was reluctant and basically the opposite of headstrong. She was a pawn, but she definitely wasn’t the meek pushover I’ve been led to believe

It was a really lovely thing to discover the more I researched about her. I think more modern historians try to be as unbiased as possible (it's always difficult), whereas in the past, people needed to show Jane in a certain light for their own ends. I agree, she was definitely a pawn, but she had her own mind, and I think would have made that clear had she remained longer on the throne. I also think her parents were overly ambitious, but not in the cruel, selfish way that's often presented, but genuinely out of a desire for their daughter as high as she could.

Yes, I think all the Tudors definitely had something in them that made them very strong, formidable people, no matter how they all turned out. I have been toying with the idea of doing a 'What If...' video at some point in the future on what might have happened if Jane had held onto the throne somehow. I think it might still have gone badly, as much of the country preferred Mary, and there definitely would have been civil war, but it's an interesting thought!

Honestly, I've always thought that Jane wouldn't have made a good monarch in any way, shape or form before watching your videos....because I've never heard quite this much information about her!!! Now, I think she may have made a good ruler. She seems to have been just as intelligent and sharp as Mary or Elizabeth. Thank you, again,, for the awesome videos!!!! Agreed, I think she definitely had it in her to hold things together. Having said that, she would never have had the support of the people, so there would almost certainly have been civil war if she had held onto the throne, I think. I have been toying with making a future video on what might have happened if she had kept the crown! 👑 👸 And you're welcome! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. 😊

Especially for her age! The letters she wrote during her short tenure as queen show someone very confident and determined in their position, though.

I was given a fictional novel about Lady Jane Grey when I was thirteen. Though it was fiction it sent me down the rabbit hole of Tudor history. I have never romanticized this period and am so glad I live now. Especially as a woman in a first world country.🇨🇦

@@HistorysForgottenPeople she did but I made it 35 years watching history documentaries and not once have I got any sense of who she was. Until now obviously. I’m sad for the girl but I’m sad we aren’t offered her story on traditional media

@@MissMentats I agree, media can be a bit slow on coming out with new ideas or information. But a lot of this new way of looking at her is the result of research from the last ten years or so, so hopefully we might see more about her as the sources show, rather than the Victorian story of her only as a victim.

Thank you. This 3 part series was very informative and interesting. I want to thank you also for the use of your background music (appropriate) and you kept it at a low enough volume (and your voice at a high enough volume) to make listening to your narrative a pleasant experience. I do not believe that Mary did enough to save Lady Jane Grey. I think that even Elizabeth was lucky to escape execution. I think that Queen Mary should have made efforts to allow the Grey family to relocate to Norway or Sweden (obviously the Netherlands were going to be a target of Catholic monarchs) Having relatives of Henry VIII survive would have been good for England. (At the time Mary Queen of Scots was not married to the dauphin of France. m. 1562) How I wish that someone could have made a match between Edward vi and Jane! (despite their young ages) and that *Edward vi had made a decree that any future queen of England who married would have to abide by the following:* *That her husband could not be a foreign king (and if a younger brother/relative, renounce the foreign crown) *That he convert to Protestantism (if a Catholic) *That he sign an agreement, before the marriage is announced that he have the rank of Prince, subordinate to the Crown/monarch (Queen). Also (in writing:) *That the only time, he could assert his right of a husband was in the bedroom and concerning the raising of the children (with the exception of their religion. The children had to be raised as Protestants)

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! ☺And you make a lot of good points; you're right that Mary could probably have done a lot more to save Jane. I think the main problem was that those arguing for Jane's case were, inevitably, Protestant. And by that point, Mary had become something of a religious fanatic when it came to Catholicism, pushed into that by her father's treatment of her mother, and trying to ostracise the last link she had to Catherine, which was their shared religion. So therefore she leaned towards those who were Catholic, who obviously wanted her to hold the throne with no other Protestant threats. It's amazing, as you say, that Elizabeth managed to stay alive, because they would happily have done away with her as well, I think. And the Edward VI and Jane thing is interesting, because I think there was some suggestion of it at some point, especially as they had grown up together. But ultimately, the country was struggling economically, and therefore England needed a marriage to a foreign princess with money. This also would have helped ensure Protestant allies were closer to England through marriage as well. Sometimes I REALLY go down the rabbit hole with this one, and consider their personalities! Edward was apparently a lot like his father, which suggests he probably would have been just as bloodthirsty. And Jane also showed signs of being very strong-minded, and - like Edward - dedicated to the Protestant faith as fanatically as Mary was to Catholicism. Had the two been married, I think we would be calling them 'Bloody Edward' and 'Bloody Jane', due to the number of Catholics they would have got rid of. In my humble opinion, of course! Who knows.

@@HistorysForgottenPeople Thank you for replying to my comment. What you said about an Edward/Jane marriage being "bloody" could well be what happened. They were also fundamentalists who did not like the popish aspects of high Anglicanism. We will never know. What we do know is that Henry VIII had a great many people killed. So that idea of I am the monarch and I rule by God's will was well engrained at the time. It took Charles the first's death for the British monarchs to begin to get the message, that despite being a monarch one could not rule roughshod over the people.

Was the dying King Edward manipulated into having Jane his heir? Jane certainly didn’t plot, scheme and conspired to get the crown so her being tried and executed was unfair. Seem as if Mary struggled with putting her young cousin to death… much as Elizabeth would struggle to put another cousin, Mary Stuart to death.

You wouldn't be alone - so did I when I think back to being taught history at school! A lot of new research has come about her over the last 10-15 years, mostly looking over what sources already exist, but not building too much into them as Victorian historians usually did. A lot of people (starting from not long after she died, with her old tutor!) wanted to portray her a particular way to fit a certain narrative which fitted with what they wanted to achieve. So as a result, for a long time she has only been known as an unloved, flimsy sort of girl who was caught up in events. I think the last part of that is true, but not the rest. :)

She may have both a pawn and a rebellious teenage girl. She was certainly a pawn of her parents who sold her wardship to Sir Thomas Seymour, the husband of Catherine Parr. And she did protest about being married against her will to Lord Guildford Dudley, so there's that to consider as well. 🤔

i like this documentary but can you mix up the background music or fade it a little more into the background? All of that soulful Tudor horn tooting gets monotonous and irritating. I had to take a break to just get away from the music.
