The Forgotten Underground of an Ancient Roman City 🏛 Salona

We explored the Mysterious Ancient Roman City of Salona in Split, Croatia. We climbed down into nearly 2000 year old underground tunnels beneath the Ampitheater in an attempt to figure out their purpose. Some say they once dragged the bodies of fallen Gladiators out through them. We also explored a Necropolis full of ancient inscribed Sarcophagi and another mysterious underground chamber not for the claustrophobic.

Just found your channel and been watching your vids. This is truly fascinating stuff. I love history, and archeological site exploration in the raw like this is really awesome to watch. Seeing that ancient sarcophagus and getting to read the inscription, knowing that was a real person that lived and died nearly 2000 year ago, that's real history. At first I thought those shallow tunnels might be a sewer structure, but your buddy's case for a cistern makes a lot of sense. Whatever it was, at this point I'd feel better wearing a hard hat down there, with all the stones that apparently came down over the centuries. Maybe that lampshade was used as a helmet at one point? 😅 "Guten Tag! We are here to liberate you of your freedom!"

It’s never a let down if you can provide everything that is known about your location. I recommend better lighting for these kinds of videos, protection for breathing, and a phone holder much like that of a GoPro.

Thanks for watching bro, and yeh smashed sign and pile of glass looks like it's been there for a while. There's a bunch more here unexcavated as well. Compared to some other sites I've been to this is actually one of the better ones. Unfortunately when it comes to getting anything done officiallg Croatia has zero organization, and that's the nicest way I can put it. It's a shame because it's one of, if not the most beautiful countries in the world. I still love it and am grateful for it. But the bureaucracy here should be under UNESCO protection.

Roman architecture isn't all what archeologists say it is. They say the Romans built Baalbek but it's very evident they didn't from the structures they did build left behind. Their drawing was like a sixth grader and everything was mortared,plastered and right along too the next conquered city over and over. The reinhabiting of cities is obvious now

Yes, and maybe a few more people will know about it and decide to visit it now since it's a somewhat neglected site. It's a really interesting place that should be explored and researched further. I hope to be a part of it if they ever open the chambers under the Arena.

this is a museum and the site has been explored since the 19th century. If you had walked to the info boards and actually read about Salona ( just the wiki page) most of the things you were asking the local "guide" would have been answered. Also I would recommend you to read Maria Todorova's Imagining the Balkans.
